Should I move next to tennis court?

I've been trying to find a rental to live for ages and finally got accepted on a lovely little one bed cottage. It's in a great area and perfect for me.
However it's right next to a park and the community tennis court is just a few feet from the house. I didn't worry about it at first as thought tennis isn't too noisy but I saw recently that some of the residents nearby have complained to the council about the noise. In the winter it's also used as a 5 a side football pitch so don't know if this is the issue or the tennis.

I'm quite noise sensitive so worried this may trigger my anxiety if it is very noisy but impossible to know how bad it could be. I'm sofa surfing at the moment and technically homeless which is also awful for my mental health and this is the only decent property I've been able to get. I'm going to have to move to the house but am super stressing about noise.

AIBU in thinking this could be a potential problem?

If you’re currently sofa surfing and struggling to get any other property, I personally would take a chance on it. If it’s totally awful because of the noise, then you can move on at the end of the tenancy. I appreciate you have a particular sensitivity though and may view this differently.

Snugglemonkey · 02/11/2022 09:25

It would be a deal-breaker to me. No way would I live near a football pitch. I have misophonia and the noise of a football being kicked sends me over the edge.

YellowTreeHouse · 02/11/2022 09:26

Why not go hang around the area and see what it’s like? Or knock and ask the neighbours?

MyHusbandTheIdiot · 02/11/2022 09:28

I think it would be a lovely place to live. I would happily live next to our local village tennis club.

I am fairly noise sensitive and used to live next to a primary school - noise from the school wasn’t an issue at all. I was much more bothered by roaring cars.

Now we live up the hill from a senior school with a very large sports complex which is used late in
to the evening, and again, no issues from that.

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/11/2022 09:29

I used to live in a flat that overlooked the park tennis courts and total non issue. Tennis is a really quiet sport and not a late night activity either. Even though 5 a side football might be a bit louder I doubt anyone is playing that late at night because there will be restrictions on times the pitches can be booked. In the summer it was actually really nice to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine and watch people playing tennis, I loved that flat!

Humphriescushion · 02/11/2022 09:30

I can block out most noise but a football being kicked sends my teeth on edge, go and check how when they are playing and see how loud it is.

FlounderingFruitcake · 02/11/2022 09:31

Also- if it’s the 5 a side that’s on in winter, you’ll presumably have the windows shut then too.

33goingon64 · 02/11/2022 09:32

It sounds idyllic to me!

Yes that's the thing, I don't really have any other choice at the mo so think I need to take it and hope for the best!

Yeah I think that may be what I suffer with. Very worried but not much choice at the mo so think will just have to hope it's not too bad

Good idea but unfortunately I'm on the other side of the country at the moment so difficult to get over. I may try to one weekend tho, thanks

Thank you, that's what I'm hoping for, Just got worried when I saw there had been noise complaints about it as I'm not good with noise. Fingers crossed!

Are the courts floodlit? If not, it will only be daytime football in the winter.

That sounds lovely...I'm hoping it will be like that. Just worried that there have been noise complaints. Hopefully it won't be an issue tho

No, they are open 24hrs but not floodlit so hopefully that will help through the winter

I would be more worried about stray balls damaging the house/garden, or having to constantly throw balls back or let people in to collect them.

itsybitzy · 02/11/2022 13:05

I'd be worried about teenagers using it in the evenings.

Tennis courts don't tend to be particularly noisy both in terms of people talking/shouting and the sound of the ball hitting the fence.

Football can be though in both regards. If you can I'd pay a few visits to it and see what the noise is like. I can't imagine that with windows shut/maybe tv or radio on it would bother you too much.

heldinadream · 02/11/2022 13:09

Can you find out the nature of the noise complaints? For all you know it could be one grumpy person and everyone else is fine with it.
Good luck OP. I honestly think it sounds like an opportunity to get yourself a nice little place - in time for winter, too.

Abitofalark · 02/11/2022 13:12

There's a tennis court in the local park near me, though not next to my house so it doesn't affect me. During the daytime, sometimes teenaged boys use the tennis courts to play football or whatever, especially during the summer. Eventually the warden comes along and moves them out.
The courts are locked in the evening and the entrances to the park are also locked. In the past there have at times been reports of people using the park at night for taking drugs but I haven't heard anything about that recently.
You could find out from the local council or councillor what the arrangements are for the park and/or the tennis courts so that you have a better idea of how it might affect you.
