To remove my own coil?

CoilBeGone · 01/11/2022 22:37

I’ve had a copper coil since March, and I’m sick to the back teeth of the fucking thing.

Crazily heavy periods, which last for 8 days as opposed to 3 light days which is my natural cycle. Feeling completely wiped out as a result. Also the pain that comes with them, honestly it’s like being in labour, it starts a good few days before my period actually comes too. Not to mention the pretty much constant BV.

Long story short, I want it out. Now, I have once removed a coil myself, but by accident (long story). So I know it’s possible and it’s just a case of finding the threads and giving it a sharp tug. My doctor’s surgery is beyond shit and I live in the back of beyond, so getting to a family planning clinic or whatever isn’t easy. I really don’t want to have to wait weeks/months for it to be gone. So contemplating just going for it. AIBU?

PLEASE DONT! You could really hurt yourself.

Mangogogogo · 01/11/2022 22:43

I did it. Pretty common in america where it costs too much to be removed when all they do is what you would do anyway.

i fainted doing mine but I am a fainter. Woke up no issues and pain gone.

make sure someone is with you

SandyY2K · 01/11/2022 22:49

Don't do it.
Make an appointment with the nurse at your GP surgery.

CoilBeGone · 01/11/2022 22:50

I don’t have form for fainting (in fact I never have) so should be ok on that front. After all I didn’t faint the last time when I found my coil in my hand when I wasn’t actually expecting to, and you’d think if anything was going to make me faint, that would 😂. And nothing bad happened afterwards. But the thought of knowingly removing it does make me a bit 🤢.

I've done it. I was crying in the shower cos I was in so much pain with mine. It was a spur of the moment decision and I just pulled it out. Really glad I did, but be very careful x

CourtneeLuv · 01/11/2022 22:57

Can't it fuse to your insides? Be very careful.

Alexandernevermind · 01/11/2022 22:59

Nooo, its making me feel dizzy just to think about removing it yourself. Please take the time out to see a medical professional for removal and make "him" get a vasectomy.

The fainting isn't due to squeamishness it's a physiological thing for some people. Some kind of vagal response. Not much you can do about it if it's going to happen.

BellaVida · 01/11/2022 23:26

Personally, I wouldn’t. I had one once- never again. So many problems, but it turns out is somehow dislodged and embedded itself in my cervix- was a real job for the doctor to remove it safely.

californiakiss · 01/11/2022 23:27

There's videos on YouTube on how to do it

RagzRebooted · 01/11/2022 23:29

It's NOT a sharp tug. If you're going to do something against medical advice (I removed my own before I was qualified to remove them, so I know it happens!) then please look up the safest way to do it. If it doesn't come out with gentle, smooth pressure then leave it be! Sharp tugging is dangerous.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 01/11/2022 23:33

Bloody hell, OP, DON'T do it. Make an appointment to get it removed if you want to.

CourtneeLuv · 01/11/2022 23:36

My friends one got 'lost' and she had to have an op to find it so I wouldn't mess with it.

FlissyPaps · 01/11/2022 23:36

Absolutely DO NOT do it yourself.

Ring the GP ASAP tomorrow and insist you are booked in to have it removed by the nurse.

Luredbyapomegranate · 01/11/2022 23:40

Please don’t. You’ve made me cross my legs in horror. Make an appt.

Magenta82 · 01/11/2022 23:41

For some reason it's much harder to get them removed than it is to get them put in, it's really not fair.

I was desperate to get mine out as it had slipped, my GPs surgery wanted me to have a conversation with the GP about the pros and cons of having it our before they would book the removal and I was going to have to wait a week for the conversation!

In the end I got to the walk in clap clinic at opening time and took a ticket along with all the itchy teenagers. I ended up having a range of STI tests before they would take it out. I think they had targets or something.

When I realised that all they do is pull it out I was so annoyed that I hadn't tried myself right at the start!

CoilBeGone · 01/11/2022 23:51

@Magenta82 that did make me laugh 😂. I don’t really have time to go down the clapper and wait there all day, I’m self employed and time is money. This is my 3rd coil - one removed by the doctors and one accidentally removed myself, and I had a similar experience to you, had to wait bloody forever for an appointment to have it removed, and when it happened I was like ‘well that was easy’.

Some mixed opinions on the thread so far then. May have a little forage around and see if I can feel the strings, and make a decision from there.

I’ve removed 2 of mine. The first time I checked with an obs/gyn friend who said if it’s embedded somewhere you’ll know about it so stop if any pain or resistance. Both of mine slipped out very smoothly, no issues. I did it lying on my bed in case it made me feel dizzy but it didn’t

toor · 01/11/2022 23:53

I've done it. Try and cough when you pull on the strings it helps

OneHundredOtters · 02/11/2022 00:17

I couldn't get a grip on the strings of mine so had to go in but o was tempted.

I'd only caution that if it's much more painful/more blood than the ones you had before then it might be in the wrong place. I had one that was embedded on one side and it was so painful. When they took it out it was like being stabbed. I couldn't have done it myself.

Correctly placed ones were a doddle to have removed in comparison

PurpleButterflyWings · 02/11/2022 00:19

Come on @CoilBeGone you MUST be able to get to some kind of family planning clinic or health care professional who could remove it. You 'live in the back of beyond' but you must go to work or college or SOMEthing. You must go out some days!

I would NOT remove it myself! I have seen people say they have done this, but no way would I. I would never have one actually, not in a million years, but that's irrelevant. Get a health care professional to remove it!

SirenSays · 02/11/2022 00:25

I don't think I'll ever be able to uncross my legs after reading this

Minieggy · 02/11/2022 00:29

My DH removed mine as I struggled to get a grip on the strings myself. It was painless and quick.

Yep, it's making my vagina quiver, from womb to vulva. And not in a good way. 😣

LondonQueen · 02/11/2022 00:37

God I think my legs have just fused together at the thought! Go to a sexual health clinic, they're your best bet, you can just wait at the walk in centre.
