To remove my own coil?

CoilBeGone · 01/11/2022 22:37

I’ve had a copper coil since March, and I’m sick to the back teeth of the fucking thing.

Crazily heavy periods, which last for 8 days as opposed to 3 light days which is my natural cycle. Feeling completely wiped out as a result. Also the pain that comes with them, honestly it’s like being in labour, it starts a good few days before my period actually comes too. Not to mention the pretty much constant BV.

Long story short, I want it out. Now, I have once removed a coil myself, but by accident (long story). So I know it’s possible and it’s just a case of finding the threads and giving it a sharp tug. My doctor’s surgery is beyond shit and I live in the back of beyond, so getting to a family planning clinic or whatever isn’t easy. I really don’t want to have to wait weeks/months for it to be gone. So contemplating just going for it. AIBU?

Did it, easy peasy, came straight out, no pain. The torture device is in the bin where it belongs!

I'm so surprised to hear you've had so many problems with the copper coil, it seems to be the least problematic contraception. I was very unlucky, I had the copper coil for 3 years and became pregnant. My gp said I was the only patient who had got pregnant in the past 3 years 🙄
I found it to be a great contraceptive, but because of what happened I've now got the implant. I've had no side effects (which I normally do with hormonal contraception) and my periods have stopped

CoilBeGone · 02/11/2022 01:20

That’s interesting re the implant, I go a bit mental with any hormonal contraception usually - hence the copper coil. I remember from my youth friends that had it used to suffer from weight gain with it, have you found that?

Please please do not do this OP. Genuinely scared for you. I would just call and say you think there's something really wrong with it and you're worried (truth!) And hopefully they'll give you a quick appointment.

NinkyNonkNausea · 02/11/2022 04:14

Whoops, I see that you've ready done it! I posted in a panic. Glad you're alright!

I did this years ago and they still wouldn't book me an appointment without me having a consultation appointment first. From my experience they are quick to put them in but the opposite when it comes to taking them out.

LoliLouToo · 02/11/2022 08:07

Please don't.

Mine was attached to my cervix.

RandomCatGenerator · 02/11/2022 08:09

So glad it came out painlessly OP!

I thought the coil was a good contraceptive option - this thread had made me think otherwise, lots of unpleasant experiences…

Good for you! I have also removed a couple and will be removing my next one when the time comes.

CrampMcBastard · 02/11/2022 08:44

The implant was awful for me 😓 and my GP made me keep persisting with it for ages before taking it out. You can’t exactly remove your own implant! I was bleeding non stop for weeks, struggling with skin, mood swings etcZ

Montague22 · 02/11/2022 08:49

I despised the implant. Made me feel so depressed.
I had the injection years ago and it was really good. Last time I asked about that the nurse said she’d worry about my bone density as I’m light…that might be rubbish though.

Soubriquet · 02/11/2022 08:59

Doctors are quick to push the coil but not so quick to remove them when there is problems.

I hated my coil. It hurt all the time.

They did remove it quickly but Eugh it was awful.

SirenSays · 02/11/2022 11:32

Omg OP you're a braver soul than I am 😅 I've had the implant forever and love it. My periods are usually awful but I don't have any on this. Doctors seem to be really really bad at warning people that non stop bleeding with the implant can be common and they can usually fix it really easy.

FortSalem86 · 02/11/2022 11:33

Don't do it. Makes me cross my legs tightly together.

OkPedro · 02/11/2022 14:14

I was wary of getting the implant but I had tried so many contraceptives over the years and couldnt find the right one.
I've had it for 8 months. No weight gain, no skin issues, no mood changes and my periods have stopped.
I was prepared for it to be a disaster and that I'd be getting it removed so I'm pleasantly surprised

Ladysodor · 02/11/2022 17:00

I removed mine when it was about two years overdue to come out. Did it very slowly and it wasn’t painful at all. However, looking back it probably isn’t advisable, I’d had a glass of wine and I was feeling brave.

roratone · 02/11/2022 17:04

I did it. 5 years ago. Didn't hurt, just felt 'weird'. I did it slowly and would have stopped should there have been any resistance
