To feel low about it getting dark early

mintywinter · 01/11/2022 17:31

I can't explain it really cos it's not logical, but these dark evenings seem to be making me feel anxious. Maybe everything seems worse this year with the cost of living and the constant bad news. I also feel less like going out in the evenings when it gets dark so early.

I am the same OP, hate it, also never keen on night driving so increased driving in the dark, hate artificial lights. Agree with people using fairy lights, I do too :)

greenhousegal · 01/11/2022 19:12

I hate the darkness so early, it is just so depressing. I know the mornings are lighter, but that is only facilitating kids going to school and commuters who are shut up all day in a school or office anyway!

I am lucky. Am off to Cadiz and Estepona for a month tomorrow. I know, I know, but I worked hard and now retired and feel I've paid my debts to society. No kids sadly but there we are. Was just looking and sunset there is 18.23. Sunrise is 7.45. Weather looking great too. No wonder people living in such areas are always in good mood. I'll be gone for the dreaded November. Sorry if I am rubbing anyone's nose in it.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 01/11/2022 19:13

I hate it too. Roll on 21st december when it starts getting lighter again. November and the first part of December are grim.

You can expect the "cosy" brigade to be along shortly wittering their nonsense about snuggles under blankies on the sofa with their hot choccie. 🙄

Willyoujustbequiet · 01/11/2022 19:18

Far better this way than dark in the mornings till nearly 10am where I am in Northumberland

InsertPunHere · 01/11/2022 19:21

I find not totally changing my body clock when BST changes and having half an hour in the morning in the light (ideally outside) makes a massive difference to my ability to cope with dark evenings.

For me the worse thing is the end of the growing season. I find it so gloomy.

LikeAStar1994 · 01/11/2022 19:22

It's dark mornings I don't like. Good thing I'm tucked up in bed during most of them.

Sorry for the boast!

Username917778 · 01/11/2022 19:25

Oh I much prefer it. It was so dark in the mornings before, I hated waving my daughter off to school in the dark. It's light here around 7.30am now.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 01/11/2022 19:25

Funny but I love the early darkness. When it's light out, I feel I should be "doing" something, but when it's dark it's like tacit permission to snuggle under blankets, read, watch TV, go to bed early, do pampering treatments/mani/pedi, etc.

I actually look forward to the time change for this reason.

RamblingFar · 01/11/2022 19:27

If I had my way we'd have double summer time in the summer and summer time in the winter.

Would leave far more time after work to get out for sports or leisure. Most of the year it's too dark to meet up outside to do anything after people finish work.

Notplayingball · 01/11/2022 19:32

I love this time of year, curtains shut early and jammies on often before 6pm.

mintywinter · 01/11/2022 20:06

greenhousegal that sounds amazing. Have a lovely holiday. I used to dream of retiring abroad to get away from the winters, but now since Brexit we can't even do that Sad

Lol at cosy brigade.
I don't mind cosy and relaxing with a blanket on the sofa but not every day from the afternoon!
Fine to do it late in the evening and watch tv or whatever but it's much nicer to go out into the garden or for a walk late afternoon and early evening.
Hate the constant darkness.

userxx · 01/11/2022 20:17

My friend goes on a low level dose of antidepressants in October and comes off them in March, the doctor said she does the same for others. I hate this time of year, I feel trapped in the house.

You can you just need visa and funds (the latter you would need anyway)

IntrovertedPenguin · 01/11/2022 20:20

@RampantIvy but I love hot chocolate with the candles on. 😂

I'm sorry it's so rubbish for your eyes. Only 5 months till Easter!

OhmygodDont · 01/11/2022 20:24

I hate it being dark so early. Just makes me tired and grumpy. End up wanting to go to bed by 8am because it’s dark and meh.

If I could hibernate that would be fabulous.

ThreeblackCats · 01/11/2022 20:24

I voted YANBU but I love the dark nights. The house just seems so cosy with lamps on.
I hate the dark mornings. I love waking early and in summer it’s getting light just after 4 am, I love being first up in summer.

pigsDOfly · 01/11/2022 20:25

Agree OP, it's horrible.

To make it worse it's doesn't stop raining where I am. Everything is sopping wet, dripping and miserable and it's dark about 4.30/4.45.

It's not cosy, it's depressing.

mintywinter · 01/11/2022 20:28

Agreed! Yes the wet weather doesn't help. It's damp and cold and dark. I genuinely don't get 'cosy' I don't even know really what that means or feels like Confused

I love it. I wish we stayed on GMT all year. I find it harder to relax in midsummer when it's light for so long. For me it just starts feeling harsh to have sun so late.

I like shutting the curtains earlier in the day.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 01/11/2022 20:33

It's a difficult time for a lot of people.

I use to hate the dark evenings.

DS is a pain in neck he wants to be out constantly but needs supervision so I'm delighted when the evenings are dark early.

When he is older I'll hate them again.

A nice bright picture of the sun could help, planning some nice times out to the cinema or grabbing a hot chocolate helps.

OneCup · 01/11/2022 21:03

The older I get, the more depressing I find it.

I'm finding that too.

My husband has started to say the dark is coming. He gets blue in the winter. I said he needs to reframe his negative statements. Rather than saying he always gets like this. Self fulfilling prophecy. I love the winter and the dark and the rain. No more squinting in the sunlight. Something cosy about these times even without the heat on
