To ask for your best psychological thriller or gritty books for me as I'm on 3 weeks bed rest

I'm starting 3 weeks bed rest and would love some recommendations for my kindle.

Love anything gritty, thriller, psychological.

Also love reading non fiction, people who have really interesting stories to tell for example I read the story of Jaycee Lee Dugard who tells her story of being abducted.

Thanks in advance x

Anne Perry if you like a historical crime drama

Luredbyapomegranate · 31/10/2022 23:46

The Wynch Elm by Tana French is great

dropthevipers · 01/11/2022 00:21

"they all love Jack". Bruce Robinson (with ail and I writer) spent fifteen years researching this book which is his take on Jack the ripper. Very convincing argument and a real page turner.

Jakadaal · 01/11/2022 00:27

If you like serial killers try the author Mike Omer - very addictive

TheFormidableMrsC · 01/11/2022 00:30

I've just read I Found You by Lisa Jewell. It's a thriller. Read the whole thing in 24 hours, couldn't put it down

Divebar2021 · 01/11/2022 00:40

American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks
The Collector by John Fowles

all fairly grim but literary. For a lighter serial killer read I quite like anything by Jo Nesbo.

Ilovetocrochet · 01/11/2022 02:11

If you like really deep psychological books with plenty of violent deaths, then have a look at Karen Slaughter ( yes, her real name!)

spiderontheceiling · 01/11/2022 02:17

Silent Patient which was mentioned by a PP still haunts me. A brilliant book
Harriet Tyce writes good psychological thrillers although they are slightly heavy on the detail around London and the Inns of Court
MC Craven is also a good crime writer

Sorry about your bed rest, OP :( Hope you’re okay and that the bed rest goes by mercifully quickly!

A couple of suggestions:

  • Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (thriller)
  • Before I go to sleep - SJ Watson (also a thriller)
  • The girl on the train - Paula Hawkins (thriller)
  • Lady in Waiting by Anne Glenconner (autobiographical; she was the Queen’s lady in waiting)

I've read the first three of those and thought they were absolute rubbish. So basic and predictable.

I'm still looking for a thrilling thriller...

Ihavehadenoughalready · 01/11/2022 04:55

If you want psychologic thrillers tied up with religion and spirituality, try Susan Howatch' "Starbridge" series. Start with Glittering Images. I absolutely loved this set of books.

Hi, I hope that your bed rest passes quickly.
I recently read ‘Forget My Name’ J.S. Monroe - a page turning thriller, worth a look.

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 01/11/2022 05:25

My Dark Vanessa

Read what it's about first in case it's not a subject for you, but it's gripping, psychological, honest, very well written.

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 01/11/2022 05:27

Dark Matter - Michele Paver - more a psychological borrow

I second lady in waiting

How to kill your family

MytummydontjigglejiggleItfolds · 01/11/2022 05:28

We are all beside ourselves is thought provoking too, not what I was expecting

ChewtonRoad · 01/11/2022 06:41

Helen Fields' books about French-Scottish detective Luc Callanach are great, and Minette Walters has written some seriously good thrillers. Jane Casey's books about Detective Maeve Kerrigan are worth getting stuck into as well.

Marie Benedict writes fictionalised stories about well known (or who should be) women. I liked "The Other Einstein" and my cousin enjoyed "The Only Woman in the Room" and "Her Hidden Genius", which are on my list.

Camilla Lackberg has some fine Scandi thrillers, and the Joona Linna books by Lars Kepler are good'uns too.

elm26 · 01/11/2022 07:01

Thanks so much again!

I have read lots of Sue Watson, Lisa Jewell, T M Logan, Harriet Tyce.

Also have read the popular ones like The Girl On The Train and Girl A.

Thank you for the tv suggestion! I didn't even think of series 🤦🏻‍♀️

I will look into all of your suggestions, you're all fab thank you z

I let you go by Claire Mackintosh, a creepy, tense, absorbing, thriller

That's the one I was going to suggest!

ParentallyUnprepared · 01/11/2022 07:22

Behind Closed Doors - B.A Paris

JustDanceAddict · 01/11/2022 07:25

How to Kill Your Family is really good
I am Pilgrim - Terry Hayes
The Push - Ashley Audrain

HRTQueen · 01/11/2022 08:07

Dark Matter - Michele Paver is perfect for this time of year the audio is excellent too really takes you away it’s very atmospheric

The Dry by Jane Harper is also very atmospheric but takes you to the outback a very good thriller

My Dark Venessa is really good though very disturbing left me feeling quite low after though

How to kill your family is bizarrely enjoyable and amusing at times

American Dirt is very good I also really enjoyed Jeannine Cummins others books The Outside Boy is very moving, The Crocked Branch and A Rip in Heaven

hope you feel better soon

Shockhorror22 · 01/11/2022 08:21

Slade House by David Mitchell - fantastic creepy ghost story, but thrilling rather than horrific.
Mick Herron’s Slow Horses - spy thriller, but with wonderful characters and very funny, and gripping. There’s about 8 books in the series.

MossGrowsFat · 01/11/2022 08:40

There is evidently something wrong with me as I quite like the idea of three weeks in bed reading.

Not really what you are asking for but 'my sister the serial killer' was an enjoyable quick read.

NeedToKnow101 · 01/11/2022 08:47

theotherfossilsister · 31/10/2022 22:18

Ah, have you read Educated by Tara Westover? It's a memoir about growing up in an abusive family dynamic in a Mormon community and breaking free.

Psychogical, how about Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier?

Sorry about your bedrest.

Educated is brilliant.
