12 yo trick or treat

Myotherusernameisshy · 31/10/2022 18:35

My 12 yo ds is sulking because I've said he's too old to trick or treat. His younger sister is going. Am I being mean?

Yes! If he’s going with his younger sister in a group with her, why not?

Myotherusernameisshy · 31/10/2022 18:37

He doesn't want to go with her. He wants to go with friends age 12/13.

I feel bad now! I thought it was for primary age children.

YABU.

We have had a mix of ages here tonight; certainly teens who are 13/14 or so.

So long as they are polite, say thank you, only go to decorated houses or those with pumpkins, and only take one sweet when offered - then fine. They must also have made an effort to dress up, not just stick a mask on! And no 'tricks' or threats.

VerifiedBot2351 · 31/10/2022 18:40

Yabu

My 15 year old is out with her buddies.

Tiani4 · 31/10/2022 18:40

Mine went up to age 17 (usually taking their little sisters around) but they dressed up too. They love going even at age 15, all dressed up with inventive makeup .

They are very polite and only knock at doors that have Halloween decoration out as that's the bay signal that Trick or treaters are welcome

Age 12 is perfect age to go as well as smaller ones !

Myotherusernameisshy · 31/10/2022 18:41

Uh oh! Thanks everyone. I need to go and apologise and find him something to wear.

I have just had a group of teens around here they were having a great time. I love seeing the older ones being kids.

He doesn't want to go with her. He wants to go with friends age 12/13.

This is different than going out with his younger sister. Groups of teens knocking on the door is too much...it's for little ones (if you have to do it at all!)

I've had groups of teens knocking on just standing there holding out their hands for sweets...no costumes, no manners...so no sweets from me!

Teens are too old, yes OP, unless they are accompanying a younger sibling to assist them.

I felt that my 11 year old might be a bit big, but I never mind when the big ones come here, it's quite sweet that they still want to so will leave her to it!

SpookyMcGhoul · 31/10/2022 18:43

12/13 sounds okay to me if dressed up and having fun!

15+ is too old imo

DonnaB4848 · 31/10/2022 18:43

Yes.

Myotherusernameisshy · 31/10/2022 18:43

That's what I thought! We had groups of teens when my kids were little and I felt a bit uncomfortable about it. I know he would be very polite.

I used to say year 7 was the last year for it. Since the pandemic I changed my mind. Bring it on, any age is fine, as long as they have a costume and manners! Frankly if an adult trick or treated me I'd give them a sweet.

AffIt · 31/10/2022 18:44

The convention when I was a kid was that it was normally your last year of primary school, which I think is about right.

CrapBucket · 31/10/2022 18:45

I think if young people want to hang onto a bit of their childhood, let's support that.

ohyouknowwhatshername · 31/10/2022 18:45

Aww, plenty of 12 year olds still trick or treating round here. Let him be a child.

TrianglePlayer · 31/10/2022 18:46

We have loads of littlies who come round but I never mind the polite teens as long as they’ve actually dressed up. The ones with a black hoodie on as their costume who try to take handfuls are not welcome.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 31/10/2022 18:47

Very unreasonable. 12 is fine as long as they behave and don't get into mischief.

Ha yes I did give some parents some treats as they were lovely.

Mine began going on their own at that age. They just did the streets close to our house.

To be honest, I was totally relieved to no longer have to trail around with them.

As their teens wore on they did lose interest in it (which I was also thankful for, as I can't be arsed with it). They are in their twenties now and pay it hardly any attention.
