To not understand how to WFH in new house with no internet yet?

Newhome101 · 31/10/2022 16:19

Posting in AIBU for traffic. I’m moving in to my new home in 2 weeks which has been empty for quite a while, so doesn’t have a working phone line. I need to work from home from day one, so my question is, does anyone have any ideas what I need to buy as a stop gap measure so my iPad, computer, tv can connect to the internet? I know years ago I used to have a dongle to plug into my laptop for emergencies, but is this still the best solution? Is there any sort of wifi device that I could put a data only sim in or similar? Has anyone else had this issue and found a good solution?
thank you!

Hot spot of your phone’s internet?

demotedreally · 31/10/2022 16:20

Hotspot from your phone? Do you need TV for work

Bramshott · 31/10/2022 16:20

Do you have unlimited data on your phone? You could just hotspot from that.

Sparklesocks · 31/10/2022 16:20

You can hot spot off your phone.

deliverooyoutoo · 31/10/2022 16:22

For wfh I'd hotspot off the phone?

Or go to a cafe or similar depending on what you're doing ?

Newhome101 · 31/10/2022 16:22

I wfh off a phone hotspot for a month after moving country.

RedWingBoots · 31/10/2022 16:22

When people I know have moved including extremely recently to WFH they have done a mixture of:

  1. Using their phone as a hotspot and using phone data for a few hours
  2. Working for a family members or friends' house
  3. Go into the office

Oh and they haven't used their phone data for non-work leisure purposes.

Newhome101 · 31/10/2022 16:23

I have a puppy so I can go to a cafe for a bit, but generally need to be at home.

A few years back now a friend worked at my home for a few days as it was nearer than her office.

Willbe2under2 · 31/10/2022 16:23

Hmm, when we moved we used our phones to do a mobile hotspot - could you do that if you have a work phone? If you're moving your current contract across and it's the same provider as your phone contact they might give you extra data (EE gave me 50gb the month I moved to plug the gap between them moving my connection across) so you wouldn't have to pay using your personal phone. Or you could just buy more data (but don't know if that's the cheapest option)

BashfulClam · 31/10/2022 16:23

Ask to up your data to unlimited for a month. You will pay slightly extra.

CredibilityProblem · 31/10/2022 16:24

Increase your phone data package to something really large for a month then.

It seems like upping your phone data will be the best option. I can't think of a cheaper way to do it.

could you get a cheap phone & an unlimited data sim?

AlisonDonut · 31/10/2022 16:25

Buy a 1p mobile SIM card and use that for data. It's dirt cheap.

Can you up your data until you have a stable line put in?
I know with my provider I can add a ‘bolt on’ on a monthly basis

shinynewapple22 · 31/10/2022 16:33

Can you not look into the best internet deal before you move and then contact your planned provider and arrange for them to connect services / send you an internet router for the day you move in?

DoodlePug · 31/10/2022 16:35

Just get a giffgaff sim and go for high data, stick it on an old phone or buy a mobile router from ebay.

haggisaggis · 31/10/2022 16:39

I bought dd one of these for the 2 weeks she was without internet

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 31/10/2022 16:41

We have 3’s 4g home internet, it’s cheaper, more reliable and faster than the Virgin fibre broadband we had before!

Panda89 · 31/10/2022 16:42

You can get mobile internet hotspots that run off a data sim, they are called Mifi devices. I used one for 3 weeks in our new build with a Smarty data sim, until we got connected up to the Broadband :)

When my internet broke, I bought an extra data allowance so I could use my phone.

Getoff · 31/10/2022 16:47

The last time I looked at unlimited data SIMs, they generally started from £25, but there was one with a lower (but acceptable) speed for £20.

But for a temporary requirement, I would just top up my existing SIM with an extra data allowance.

Getoff · 31/10/2022 16:51

AlisonDonut · 31/10/2022 16:25

Buy a 1p mobile SIM card and use that for data. It's dirt cheap.

Although if you using lots of data, you need to get add a data bundle to get more data for you money. £15 fo 50Gb, or £20 for £100Gb, might be enough to last until broadband can be installed.

Starseeking · 31/10/2022 16:55

Contact your new provider and forward book them for the installation.

Otherwise you'll end up spending £60 on emergency data for the 2 weeks you have no connection because your mobile phone provider doesn't give temporary unlimited increases (thanks O2!)

Guess how I know this 🤦‍♀️
