People are fine with being disrespectful to Christians

At a church playgroup. The people who run it are very devout Christians. I am taken aback, by the number of parents, who thought it was appropriate to bring their kids to the church dressed for Halloween. Kids are dressed as witches, goblins, skeletons, creepy pumpkins etc..
The church holds a light party every year on Halloween and is very clear that they do not endorse Halloween.

To answer a few point so far.

  1. It was a church playgroup inside a church. It runs every Monday. The light party is this evening.
  2. I am a Christian and yes I don’t like to see kids dressed as a witch or devil inside a church.
  3. I was not equating kids wearing Halloween costumes to gimp suits. I was asking the specific poster, if there were any limits to their suggestion, that we shouldn’t shame anyone for what they are wearing.
  4. The amount of hatred towards Christianity on this thread has been shocking. I do not mean people who disagree with me on the costumes in church. I mean the people who have posted about their hatred for the church in general.

Muslims teaching states that Halloween is Haram. Would people think it was disrespectful if I dressed my kids as the devil and went to the Mosque? Would it be ok if I wore a bikini to a Mosque (as another poster said). Or took my kid to a Synagogue dressed as a ham sandwich?

Are no faiths allowed to be offered consideration by people using their places of worship?

As has been pointed out multiple times, many Christians don't have a problem with Halloween. If they didn't explicitly tell people not to dress up they can't really complain (if they even are complaining and it's not just you getting professionally offended on their behalf).

This is such a weird thread.

(My Catholic kids will be out tonight dressed up all spooky.)

I do not believe that showing disrespect is the most serious thing. If it is, then christians telling me or implying that I will go to hell and burn for eternity for my beliefs and the way I live my life is infinitely more disrectful to me than any disrespect I could show them

Why is it shocking?

I don’t see why I have to respect an organisation that hoards money and resources, is institutionally sexist, homophobic. It also covers up rampant abuse of children and young mothers.

But I’m the one going to hell?

Hmm.

"the church" and Christianity isn't the same thing.

It's quite clear from this thread that Christians are expected to be all-loving, all-tolerant, all-encouraging, all-permitting doormats.

They are not. For a start, Christians are people who make mistakes, like everyone else. But they are also some of the kindest, generous, most loving people I know. They are brave holding to beliefs that are firstly misinterpreted and twisted, then verbally abused and attacked for them. IMO a difference of opinion or belief does not mean someone is intolerant.

It's easy to be in the majority and hate, mockery or ridicule the Christians. Isn't that what most have done on this thread?

A family member who is Catholic was in the supporting demonstrations when a Priest was accused of child abuse. He was subsequently convicted.
I find Christians who do not shout about their faith can be lovely. But those who shout about it tend to be the most judgemental and unkind people I meet in my daily life.

I agree the amount of hatred towards Christians is astonishing, what with the 'Magical Sky Fairy' comments etc.....

It's almost as if people are angry because Christians have something they trust and believe in!

tbh, as a Christian I find these threads more eye-roll-worthy than anything else. I suppose they serve à purpose in letting the more persecution-inclined Christians feel they’re under siege, and the more persecution-inclined atheists fulfil that weird longing some have to pretend they’re surrounded by American fundamentalists damning them to hell.

Still hypocritical.

Do you get off on threatening people with hell?

If I "threaten" a serial rapist with punishment for breaking the laws of man, I am applauded.

If I "threaten" a serial adulterer with punishment for breaking the laws of God, I am denounced.

But of course, I am a hypocrite.

This thread highlights how far the West has fallen.
