Vomiting blood-34 weeks pregnant

WellFuck3 · 30/10/2022 21:48

NC. Posting for traffic! Now OBVIOUSLY 111/A&E is what I should be doing, I’m 34 weeks pregnant, felt awful the last few days just tired/drained/nauseous. Tonight I was laying in bed getting DD to sleep when I just knew I was going to vomit, just about made it to the bathroom in time and it was pure bright red blood and a lot of it🤢 still feel sick but not being sick, headache. Also freaking out as I’m on clexane but admittedly forget to take it some days, in fact all of last week I took it once when I remembered (I know). Although I HATE taking it as it gives me nosebleeds and have bleeding coming out my ears when I take it (been to pregnancy assessment unit about that, the haematologist said it was fine to continue taking them).
But here is my dilemma! I have 5 young children here all asleep, my go to’s are DH and my mum, DH is away with work for the week, DM is 7 hours away visiting family, I live rural without a neighbour for miles, and no one else I could call! Wtf do I do? Could it of been a one off from the strain of vomiting causing the bleed? Also don’t particularly want my children to wake up and find me dead…
I basically need someone to tell me I am going to be fine until tomorrow when I can ask DH or DM if it’s possible to travel back so I can be seen.. please🙏🏼

Wishing you well OP!

So scary for you! Hope they find out whats going on and you'll feel better ❤

SouperNoodle · 01/11/2022 17:43

How are you doing op?

WellFuck3 · 01/11/2022 20:18

Hi all thank you for all the messages!
It’s a stomach ulcer and I was discharged with ranitidine (think that’s how it’s spelt) and also had another anti-d injection as I’m O- and obviously there was a bleed, they’ve also said they’d phone me with blood results regarding antibodies but think I’m covered by the anti-d now anyway! DH will be WFH now until baby is here- wise choice if I do say so myself!

SouperNoodle · 01/11/2022 20:28

I'm so glad they found the cause and thank goodness your DH will be WFH to support you!
Take it easy now xxx

You sound remarkably stoic OP, sending you my best wishes!

I love this haha it wasn’t until I got into the ambulance knowing the kids were sorted and safe I realised just how much pain I was in and could let go. To the point I was trying really bad to not vomit/hide if I needed too to not scare them and the poor ambulance bloke in the back with me when I then went on to fill 3 sick bowls of blood- he said straight to the driver I’m calling this in we’re not sticking her in A&E waiting room🤣 even then I apologised haha!! I said I’m so sorry you can put me in the waiting room honestly I don’t mind🤣

You are truly stoic, so glad they got you seen. Rest up ❤

Teaandcrumpets95 · 01/11/2022 20:49

Glad you've gotten sorted! And sounds like a good plan to have the husband at home x

Take care op xx

Are you in the uk? We stopped using ranitidine a few years ago as it was found to be carcinogenic 🤔 I’m surprised to hear they gave it to you. Also you don’t need anti d as bleeding from a stomach ulcer is not a sensitising event so had no chance of causing a feto-maternal haemorrhage. I’m aware I sound like a knob questioning the medical decisions but it doesn’t sound right!

Shit really!? Do I make a GP appt for a second opinion? I have midwife on Friday shall I wait until then and see what she sais? It was a consultant who said he was going to the registrar to see the best course of action and came back saying anti-d and ranitidine, I didn’t think twice to question it if I’m honest, but slightly worried now! And yes I’m in the UK

So firstly - risk is very very low - but if/when you're up to it, both the consultant & registrar need reporting @WellFuck3 - it's unacceptable that they're unware of this.

Ranitidine is not currently available in the UK or globally. It has been discontinued as a precaution because it may contain a small amount of an impurity that has been linked to an increased risk of cancer in animals. It's not yet known whether it will be available again in future

If you've taken ranitidine in the past, any risk is likely to be very low.

www.nhs.uk/medicines/ranitidine/

The NHS page hasn't updated it's info on stomach ulcers, and it still recommends ranitidine as a treatment. Also pretty unacceptable given NHS info pages are where people go for advice! I'm going to try and work out how to report this myself.

henlee · 01/11/2022 21:59

Did they discharge you with no treatment then @WellFuck3 ? Were you supposed to be collecting this from a pharmacy?

Hold up, panic over!! They discharged me with a prescription, which I gave to DH and he put it in today to be collected tomorrow- it was omeprazole! They did definitely talk of ranitidine but I’m so bloody sleep deprived I’m about to get people in trouble for no reason, DH is sure the prescription is omeprazole and I will double check tomorrow when picking it up!

I mean at this point maybe it was an anti-sickness!? I’ve been in and out of it! The last 3 days just feel like one big jumbled up disoriented day! All I know for sure is I’m no longer vomiting (blood or otherwise) and I’m no longer in any pain and I just need to sleep for a week haha!

Can you get your husband to double check everything while you sleep?

Hopefully you can get some rest and he can just confirm you were given/have been prescribed the correct medications Flowers

That would make sense @WellFuck3 as Omeprazole is what ranitidine was replaced with x They may have given you the anti D as a precaution (im O- too) or it may have been an anti sickness drug which would be more feasible but it sounds like you're on the road to recovery - thank goodness xx

Ah mumsnet is great. Glad you got the right medication in the end OP!

ChickpeaPie · 02/11/2022 06:47

You said they’re phoning you with blood results for antibodies though, which is related to anti d not anti sickness

You’re right they did say this, but then I’ve always had an anti-d at 28 weeks and another at 34 weeks anyway so again never thought to question it!

Did the consultant talk to the registrar about a treatment plan or was it the other way round? A consultant would be the registrar's line manager, I would have thought.

It all sounds a bit odd. Ranitidine and Omeprazole work in different ways, I'm surprised if they talked about Ranitidine, they didn't go for the replacement drug that works in the same way but is not carcinogenic.

I'd be inclined to talk the whole thing through with another medical professional ASAP. An actively bleeding stomach ulcer during pregnancy isn't usually dismissed with a prescription for meds, and the Anti D thing makes no sense.

Feel better soon.

userc · 02/11/2022 11:54

How are you feeling today? @WellFuck3

Were you or your DH able to sort out the medication confusion?

hangryyhippo · 02/11/2022 19:49

Hope you're continuing to recover OP!
