To think my kitchen has the worst view ever?

Just bought a house. What I didn't notice when viewing was that the kitchen window above the sink has a lovely view onto a brick wall of another part of the house (an extension), about four foot away. You cannot see anything else apart from the brick as it extends in both directions.

Can anyone suggest anything that I could do to the wall to make it a bit nicer to look at while I'm washing up?

I don't want to do anything to the window itself (eg any kind of cover on the glass) as due to having this wall so close to the only window the kitchen is dark enough as it is. So it needs to be something on the wall.

I guess I could do hanging baskets? Ideally something non living so it's nice all year round and is low/no maintenance though.

Ideas please!

Yes hangng baskets, maybe a wall planter just below your window so you see the flowers?

WorrieaboutFIL · 30/10/2022 20:28

Trellis? Bird boxes?

CrystalCoco · 30/10/2022 20:29

How on earth did you not notice this when viewing the property!?!?

Is the kitchen itself absolutely stunning?? otherwise I don't understand...

But to answer your question, maybe a mural of some description on the wall, herb planters along the sill?

FuzzyPuffling · 30/10/2022 20:29

Planter and trellis on the wall, then you can attach climbers to it.
And/or paint the wall a light colour to reflect what light there is.

Squirrelsnut · 30/10/2022 20:31

Agree, paint the wall white and attach planters/trellises.

Redhop · 30/10/2022 20:31

Light colour wall, hang a mirror on it to reflect the light, window boxes, hanging basket

echt · 30/10/2022 20:31

Paint it. Fix rebar to the wall so it's proud of the wall by 5 cms or so. Cover with small hanging baskets to make living wall.

My kitchen looks out into the garage wall. Sounds grim but it’s lovely! We have a wisteria planted and a bed of shrubs/ flowers. Hanging baskets etc. it’s like a mini garden.

Cattytabby · 30/10/2022 20:32

Get a dishwasher.

MightyOaks · 30/10/2022 20:32

Is any part of your kitchen without anything above it? Ie: anywhere you could put a Velux window to add extra light? In fact in my last house, which had 3 storeys, one bedroom on the first floor had a velux window in the roof, despite having a storey above it......

mowly77 · 30/10/2022 20:35

Same. Painted wall white, much better.

And as many plants and flowers in planters, boxes, trellis etc.

Bit confused by your idea of ‘non living’ though?! It definitely won’t look nice all year round if it’s not alive … there are loads of seasonal plants ; bedding plants etc; for all seasons.

This has made me feel better! I would love to see a photo if you fancy taking one.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. There is a room directly above the kitchen so don't think a velux will be an option.

Was thinking something not alive as plants do not like me and tend to die off.

Not sure what that would be, someone has suggested a mural which is interesting. I guess was thinking whether an outside picture of some sort might work if that's something that exists!

Just get a nice blind. I’ve always got my kitchen blind down as my kitchen window faces the entrance to the building.

IfCanCanICan · 30/10/2022 20:45

Have you seen those garden shower curtain type things? I can't decide if I like them or not, but they might be good for your wall if you don't want real life living things.

AltheaVestr1t · 30/10/2022 20:48

I'd love to see photos of these!

Applesandcarrots · 30/10/2022 20:50

Wall plants, potted tall plants and...
Bord feeder. They WILL find it😉

Oooh I'd never heard of these but this might work!

Anyone know how I attach them to the wall?

You could make it into a living wall. You can get fake ones but that would be a bit of a shame.

Or have a mural painted.

MarianneVos · 30/10/2022 20:52

Bird feeder is a good idea too.

Pandor · 30/10/2022 20:52

You could put up a mirror and keep a selection of amusing hats handy to wear whilst doing the dishes.

Ah gotcha. Paint the flowers and plants in a mural??! Like the idea of a mural, we have end of terrace - massive blank wall in prime spot, just begging for Banksy to rock up & make me rich.

RoseslnTheHospital · 30/10/2022 20:53

If you have living plants and bird feeders then you will attract wildlife and have a much more varied, changing and interesting view than a mural or other decoration.

Applesandcarrots · 30/10/2022 20:53

Get few with different feed. One with seeds and one with fat balls for winter.
These are irresistible to most

Annabananna1 · 30/10/2022 20:59

Paint the lower 2 /3rds a soft colour (doesn't have to be white. I'd potentially go for a dusty blue, pink or green), grow some trailing plants up trellis.

Large pots with perhaps bamboo? Gets big and bushy quickly so will take some looking after occasionally but that would give your some instant greenery and a feature.

Consider lighting. Could some up lighting or some kind of spot lighting be set up on this wall to add interest in the evening & highlight your new beautiful wall
