To think a UK holiday is still a proper holiday?

I’m going to Argentina next week and a friend commented that it’s been ages since I had a proper holiday post covid.

I’ve managed to do long weekends away and a week away twice in the UK and also went to Spain for a long weekend from 2020 to now.

True I haven’t been to a destination that’s really far away since 2019 but I feel like i still had proper holidays. Aibu or does what I did not count as a holiday?

@Arayes Thank you. Yes I suspect that there is a touch of the green eyed monster at the root of certain posts.

@Arayes Spot on! I think that certain posers on this thread have a bit of a persecution complex, and/or a bit of the green eyed monster about those of us who see holidays out of our own country as proper holidays!

Oh, no! Not that old 'You're jealous!' line. That is a bit desperate, and kind of shows where you're coming from with this.

😀

I've been on 2 holidays this year. Both holidays one abroad and one in the UK so nothing green eyed from me.

Beat you! Three in the UK, one abroad, long weekend in Seville which doesn’t count because it was too short to be a holiday, despite the plane journey.

Mapletreelane · 31/10/2022 13:25

Oh FFS. Of course a holiday in the UK is a holiday! Holidays aren't just limited to hot places abroad. There are.loads of places in the world to visit that aren't hot. What would you consider 2 weeks in Canada? Or Iceland? Or southern Chile? Or Sweden? Are they not holidays? Over lockdown i have had a great time discovering new places in the UK, the Lakes, Wales, Northumberland. They were incredible holidays, and I have travelled to some unusual countries. If your definition of a holiday has to be hot and abroad then that is a pretty narrow minded view. A holiday is what you make it. Doesn't have to involve a plane or heat.

And don't get me started on the word staycation. That could inspire a whole other thread.

Well if we are counting short breaks I have lots and lots of UK ones as we have a van and camp most weekends from April to September. But I'm not allowed to call those holidays!

Helpyou · 31/10/2022 13:40

Staying in the UK = a staycation holiday
Going abroad = abroad holiday.

Both are holidays.

Staying in the UK at home is a staycation

Nah, not counting short breaks. At least a week or it doesn’t count! 😂

It's the change of use of 'staycation' to refer to holidays in home country that has fueled the idea that home country holiday is not a proper holiday!
The word staycation was coined to refer to staying in your own home but going and doing trips.

I've had one holiday this year, in the UK. It was one of my favourite improper or fake holidays ever
I have been abroad so I have "proper" holidays to compare it to 😉

LosingTheWill2022 · 31/10/2022 13:53

The clue is in the word "vacation". Vacating your home for a period of time to do leisure activities = holiday
Not vacating your home but doing leisure activities for a period of time = staycation

We almost had another holiday but cut it short on day 6 because of the brilliant British weather 😂

Daddydog · 31/10/2022 14:07

I travel a lot for work (far more pre-covid) and being stuck on a plane for 10hrs every couple of weeks meant when it came to holidays, it got to the point where the last thing I wanted to do was more of the same. I was in the camp of "UK isn't a propper holiday" but I discovered the joys of holidaying here and they felt so much more relaxing!! No jetlag, no language barrier, no stress and best of all - no Dehli belly!!! Sadly COVID, high demand and cost of living seems to have pushed the prices of UK holidays up a fair whack so it's more cost effective going abroad.

Wiluli · 31/10/2022 14:10

Nope , even if the break is beautiful Scotland or similarly idyllic it’s not a “ proper holiday “ . A proper holiday involves a constant of sun and going abroad for me .

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 31/10/2022 14:13

I consider it a proper holiday. Some of my favourite holidays have been UK based.

Your friend is also rude to comment.

ButterflyBiscuit · 31/10/2022 14:17

It's a shame some people's views of holidays are so narrow that it has to be sun/beach/different country for them to count.

I have love holidays abroad and in the UK. I don't like sun and lying on a beach all day so mine have been very varied. According to some on here though I've never been on holiday 🙄. And no... funnily enough not jealous of those who call a week in the sun abroad a proper holiday. I go abroad a lot but would actually prefer a week exploring the UK than a sunbed holiday!

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 31/10/2022 14:21

A holiday is literally just a period of recreation away from home so of course its still a holiday if you go somewhere in the UK. Someone may have a preference for going abroad, but their claims of staying in the UK not being a holiday are just plainly incorrect.

I do all different things for holidays and don't feel any one is more holiday-ish than the others.

Oh FFS, as if other opinions were just as valid as yours!

WTF is wrong with the people on this thread? Think of an analogy with a meal...there may be a dictionary definition of a meal, but people have different of what a PROPER meal is. Some think a sandwich can be a proper meal, others think its a snack. Some people think a proper meal has to be hot, or has to be with utensils, or has to be at a dinner table.

Everyone knows what the word meal means, everyone differs on their interpration of a PROPER meal. Yes?

So why can't you understand the same thing for holidays? We all know what the dictionary says is a holiday, we all differ in what we personally think is a PROPER holiday for US PERSONALLY. Some people think it needs to be abroad, some don't. Some people think it needs to be a minimum length, others don't. Some people think it must involve sun, others don't.

It's a matter of opinion, not fact. Frankly, anyone saying that they can say what is or is not a proper holiday for anyone but themselves is an idiot.

There is certainly an idiot on this thread.... And it's not the ones saying holidays can be in the UK

I live in London for a bit and knew someone who had been abroad lots. And London. But not ever really seen anywhere else in England!
I've noticed that a lot: many people who only have holidays abroad end up with very little knowledge indeed of their own country outside of their own area/county/region.

Yes, Buffet - so very true, and so sad.

Had a couple of friends just like this. Then they bought a classic sports car and decided to do a road trip in the UK (they thought it would be 'quaint'...). Asked me for suggested route/destinations and came back absolutely amazed at some of the places they'd visited. 'We never realised there were places like that in this country!!!' sort of thing.

Oh, of goodness sake...WHY didn't you realise? Where have you been living for the last few decades? How is it possible to live in a country and not know about its landscape and history?

It sounds trivial, but I'm so saddened and puzzled when I read the anti-British threads on here and elsewhere. I'm afraid there are lots and lots of people who know nothing of what these islands have to offer, never mind actually visiting them.

Not knocking abroad holidays!!! Not at all - love them - they're great. But don't let's do down some of the lovely places in the UK.
