Thick, blue tub, Nivea cream

Is it really as miraculous as some claim?
Does anyone use it?
The cheap, cheerful, massive blue Nivea tin moisturiser.
I remember my mum always using Ponds cream too and she has amazing skin at nearly 70 (she now uses Nivea-not the blue tin one)

i'd never use it every day, it gives me spots.
But I like the aldi or lidl rich thick night moisturisers.

Sooverhalloween · 29/10/2022 21:19

@Mindymomo Did she use this blue tin one?

I just like it because it smells of my mum ❤️

scrivette · 29/10/2022 21:31

I prefer Nivea soft as it isn't so greasy. The day cream with SPF (the cheap one in a tube) is very good too.

AriettyHomily · 29/10/2022 21:44

I love it but I only use it at night a couple of times a week

I don’t use it in the morning as feel it’s too greasy. The ones who only use it at night, what do you use in the mornings?

I just use Spf as Moisturiser I don't feel the need for both as I'm so hydrated at night

PAFMO · 29/10/2022 19:13

Yes.
Though I prefer Astral (ginormous lighter blue tub) as it sinks in better.
They're both oil rather than water based so make sure skin is dry before putting them on or they separate.

I was coming along to suggest Astral very good for ethnic skin tones.

moanyhole · 29/10/2022 22:00

O use it every night and since I've started using it funnily enough I've no spots. It's fantastic for my dry skin. I use cerave with spf in the mornings. I've given up on serums of any sort including retinols. Made no difference whatsoever. My mother has fantastic skin at 86. All she's ever used is ponds cold cream to cleanse and nivea cream at night.

User963 · 29/10/2022 22:01

I find it works miracles for a sore nose when you have a cold but I’d never use it as a moisturiser on my face as I’d break out in loads of spots.

Sooverhalloween · 29/10/2022 22:06

Do the still sell Ponds cream (moisturiser)? I used to love the smell of it when my mum used it

I don't like the fact that it's made of very cheap ingredients that aren't nourishing to the skin, nothing wrong with cheap ingredients per se, because almond oil is cheap but very good but it's made of petrol chems that just aren't good and some alcohol I think.
With the nivea creme, after a very short time rubbing it in, you'll notice it dissolves into a thin liquid, I think that's the alcohol and fragrance.
I adore the smell but wouldn't buy it based on the ingredients and price of it.
I'll happily buy the shower gel scented with it though.
You can get far more nourishing products for alot cheaper.
If something is high in 'paraffin liquidium' or liquid paraffin and silicones and / petroleum then I wouldn't personally put it on my face.

For the morning - any of the below...

  • Nivea Soft
  • Cerave Creme
  • Cerave Moisturiser
  • Simple Light Mousturiser
  • Simple Rich Moisturiser
MintyGreenDreams · 29/10/2022 22:22

Prefer nivea soft

thesurrealist · 29/10/2022 22:23

It's dreadful for my sensitive, dry skin.
The neutrogena hydro boost range however is amazing.

But that's my skin. Everyone is different.

Me too
My much loved much missed mum with lovely skin!

I use nivea blue tin as my daily moisturiser. I started doing that about four years ago when my gran said it was all she had ever used and ages 95 with hardly any wrinkles.

I notice it now when I use another moisturiser. They just don't give me the same plumpness to my skin. I also find a lot of them give me a rash or burn my skin.

I warm it across my palms and then smooth it across my face, and never found it takes ages to sink in that way. However, I have Turkic skin, so it holds a lot of oil anyway.

I do think there's something to be said for those old-fashioned cold creams.

mycatisannoying · 29/10/2022 22:50

I have dry skin on my calves. Unless I moisturise, I get flakes of skin on my tights 😬
Anyway, I used it recently and didn't like it. It just kind of sat on my skin and made my tights difficult to get on! It also rubbed on (but didn't absorb) very patchily.

ThinWomansBrain · 29/10/2022 22:51

Simple Protect 'N' Glow Radiance Booster SPF 30 is amazing - I started using it about six months ago after someone on here reccomended it.
It's an oil - you only need a couple of drops.

SwedishEdith · 29/10/2022 23:09

I use the blue tin stuff to remove my make up. Wash it off with a hot flannel and use the Nivea Soft as actual moisturiser.

ITriedToStopSwearingButICunt · 30/10/2022 08:31

Cheap blue tub Nivea would be my one chosen luxury for my desert island.

I've used it since I was 12. I'm 53 now, and my skin is good, no lines. I have been told here and there that I have "good skin". I love the smell.

If I'm pootling around the house I'll wear it in the morning, too; if I'm going out I'll use Astral instead, which is marginally lighter!

It's also good for my increasingly dry knees and elbows.

dudsville · 30/10/2022 08:33

I've always been dry, i love this stuff, it soaks in for me.

sophiasnail · 30/10/2022 10:58

I use astral, smells lovely and sinks in quickly.

A few years ago, my DH decided to try moisturising as his facial skin was dry, itchy and uncomfortable. He bought exactly this large tub of Nivea as it was the cheapest thing he could find in Tesco (not to stereotype but he's not from Yorkshire for nowt, bless him 😂). It works for him and it's now part of his daily ablutions, but importantly it has no sun protection.

He scoffs at that (SPF costs more, so...) but I had a BCC (basal cell carcinoma) removed from my nose a while back and the specialist advised using a daily moisturiser with minimum SPF30. The brand doesn't matter, just min SPF30 and every day was the mantra for keeping BCCs at bay as much as possible. The sooner you start with this the better.

I use Nivea Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Protecting Skin Cream SPF30 daily (it's meant to be for "mature" skin, but my 20-something daughters also use and like it); it's not expensive and feels nice. My current deal is an Amazon "subscribe and save" for 3 tubs at just under £15 - they last me 4 or 5 months. Boots have something similar in their "mature" skin ranges, and there are usually pots of Olay or other creams on offer too.

Just use something you like, but please, really do make sure it's daily SPF30 to minimise skin damage and those horrible little BCCs.
