Posting for traffic. We're meant to have a vegetable stew, I put it on this morning and told him to leave it don't touch or add anything. I come in today after shopping and he's added the dumplings in, these dumplings was left out all night left in the shopping delivery bag, they're aunt Bessie ones. I was meaning to throw them out as I've gone and bought new ones fresh from the shop, they was left in a bag when the shopping was delivered and I never got home until late last night. I put them on the side this morning meaning to throw them out but got distracted.

Now I can't find anything online in if they'll be ok to still eat, as it says keep frozen. Now they're only the frozen ones but still does anyone know if they'll be ok to eat considering they were left out? Or do I need to throw the whole stew out?

They'll be fine, goodness is it any wonder that there are complaints about husbands on here that won't cook / touch anything lest they get it "wrong"

Not the same - she was cooking not him, and she told him to leave it don't touch or add anything . That’s entirely different to a man cooking something his own way and being criticised.

JudgeRindersMinder · 29/10/2022 15:31

I’m actually horrified that people know so little about food these days! Why on earth would you throw out something which is totally inert like dumplings because it’s not been refrigerated for a few hours! People really need to get some common sense around food wastage

Yarnosaur · 29/10/2022 15:28

Apart from the fact that they've been put in ridiculously early (they only need half an hour) they'll be fine.

Imho, the whole stew has been started ridiculously early. It takes 2-3hrs to make veg stew in a slow cooker and OP started first thing in the morning.

They was frozen when delivered as they always come frozen but by the time I got home they was defrosted! my fault for not throwing them out but late night and got distracted!

You shouldn't have thrown them out in the first place! Just put them in the freezer when you found them.

The stew will be fine

MichelleScarn · 29/10/2022 15:32

Were the kitchen light off when they were left out overnight?
Have they then been 'darked on'?! 😲

Seekingguidance22 · 29/10/2022 15:35

The stew has been in since this morning on low, we have dinner around 3pm, it's how I've always done it in and always works out fine!

Thank you all for the advice I just genuinely wasn't sure if they was still good and with little ones eating it too I wanted to make sure they'd be ok.

As for the comment about husbands being scared to do anything, this is one of those meals I like to do myself and wouldn't of been the first time a meal would have been ruined due to interfering with it.

Luckily this time should be fine!

Also I agree with the need of beef in it too - wasn't delivered though and wasn't going to pick some up today as wouldn't of been done in time. So veg it is....

I know, but some dumplings have ground pork or lamb or prawns in them. So did you want to assume.

I think she means traditional style British cookery dumplings - flour and suet mix

RosesAndHellebores · 29/10/2022 15:40

Perhaps old fashioned domestic science needs to be reintroduced to the curriculum for both sexes instead of design and technology. Alongside woodwork/technical science and some basic training about personal banking, credit, interest rates and personal budgeting.

And yes, I agree OP. Your dinner will be fine. Enjoy it. Quite fancying an old fashioned Oxtail stew now with pearl barley and dumplings.

OriginalUsername3 · 29/10/2022 15:43

They didn't need throwing out anyway, they've only defrosted, they're still perfecty safe. It's only meat and fish you need to be careful with

Daftasabroom · 29/10/2022 15:44

Dumplings are made from flour, suet and water, WTF would you buy them pre-made,?

namechange3394 · 29/10/2022 15:46

Hang on, you have dinner at 3pm?

Is this your "lunchtime" meal or your "evening meal". Or do you only eat one?!

Totally agree with this. It’s not that long on the great scale of things since I was at school. I did GCSE Home Economics (Food and Nutrition) and alongside cooking, we learned about budgeting, shopping, using up leftovers and the science behind why different nutrients and food groups are important.

Contrast that with DD’s GCSE in DT Food, where she apparently spent two years “designing” and making brownies. Totally pointless in terms of life skills.

Etinoxaurus · 29/10/2022 15:53

Ref slow cooked cabbage- this nigella recipe is amazing and has the cabbage cooking for 2 hours- just don’t do it in the slow cooker 🤮

ButterflyAi · 29/10/2022 16:01

Totally fine. I also fancy stew and dumplings now.

It's obviously the type of dumpling that goes in a stew. You don't put Asian style dumplings in stew. They are entirely different things.

My husband cooks, when he cooks I accept that he might not do things my way. But I don't meddle with what he is making.

However if I leave a casserole or similar cooking I would need to say to him "please don't add anything" because he thinks he can improve on it by adding things only he likes. And whatever anyone says "a little bit of xxx" often will hurt when no one else in the household can stand the ingredient and we end up with no dinner. He has 3000 different varieties of condiment he can add to his portion on his plate!!

Witchofthedales · 29/10/2022 16:27

They'll be fine, it's only if you've refrozen them after thawing then thawed them again that is the problem with frozen items although it's only suet and flour, it would be different if a meat / fish product.

I am not surprised at food waste stats after I joined MN...

Same. The amount of ignorance around storage, and cooking of food on here has been a revelation to me.

PayPennies · 29/10/2022 16:34

I just want to understand what “dinner” is usually at 3 pm. Because - people who mean “lunch” as dinner surely eat before then, and people who mean “evening meal” as dinner definitely eat after then so WTF is dinner at 3?

There are also european dumplings btw

Seekingguidance22 · 29/10/2022 16:39

We have our dinner (evening) at 3/4pm, which fits in our schedule at the minute, which means bath can be done by 5 which allows time for dinner to settle, to then be out the bath and dressed but around 5:45 and then an hour TV time before bed, our dd is 3 so works for us at the minute, then of an evening I have something small aswell. My DH is a bodybuilder so he eats later aswell as the meal because of that reason!

Once school starts it'll be completely different but at the minute we've a very fussy eater who will only eat with us pkja this routine at the minute works, which allows a little adult time aswell in the evening.

I think these are British style stew dumplings not gyozas.

glasshole · 29/10/2022 16:41

As others have said, will be fine. I bake sourdough and that starter is years old now, I just keep adding to it. Plus I leave the dough to prove for 12 hours at room temp then 3 days in the fridge!
