To think nobody ‘pads’ in real life, is this just a book thing? Stuff you only read in books…

‘She slipped on his shirt and padded across the room ‘
Does anyone ‘pad’ in real life? I have read it 4 times this week (I’m on holiday and reading a lot of chic lit!). Why is it only used in books?

Who says 'Jane Austen' is 'better literature?' It's all subjective. I think Jane Austen's work is as boring as fuck. I know several people who did English degrees, and they were forced to read Austen, and they said it's a pile of wanky drivel.

I had to set my teeth against some books we had to read, but we all know what “ Sugar” is- Poorly written with predictable plot.
Dickens goes on a bit, but remember it was a mark of the era they were written in-
People had the time ( The middle classes at least) to read these books.
Now ,people’s attention span is much shorter generally, with advent of internet.

Well I have to confess that last night I padded into the bathroom and gazed in the mirror at my not quite perfect face, my lips just a little too wide and plump for my oval shaped, finely boned face, my raven hair perhaps a shade too dark to perfectly set off my porcelain skin. Dissatisfied, my lash framed, sparking green eyes dropped momentarily to drink in the sight of my smooth, creamy, perky breasts; my lips parted, i released a breath I didn't realise I was holding, padded silently back to bed and slipped between the cool, silky sheets, falling alseep almost as soon as my head touched the pillow.

Limit your caffeine intake after 4pm and don't have a drink within an hour of going to bed. That should help with those 3am toilet visits.

I didn’t think Dickens ever published a full book, it was a few chapters released at a time, like a serial

I love this thread!

It's all so true....padding....guffawing....all the mirror stuff

Can I add 'he gruffly whispered in her ear'

Gruffly?? What IS that?

Gruffly implies a beard.
A beard tickling your ear and hot breath, and a gravelly voice.

Like the Gruffalo, but for adults.
Rather bear like.

Deadringer · 29/10/2022 15:02

Padding is a real thing, but in books it seems to relate to any woman walking around in bare feet, to give the impression of nonchalance, or casualness. (Not knowing that she is about to be murdered, or more likely, swept off her feet and passionately made love to).

LeMoo · 29/10/2022 15:03

Pretty sure I padded across the kitchen last night.

Wasn't there an identical thread not long ago?

Yes the short version is, I went for a piss.

Something about the way women come down stairs - she tripped gaily down the stairs

surely women "boob boobily down the stairs"?

RoryRobin · 29/10/2022 15:06

Tripping down the stairs will get you a ten episode series on the Netflix.

Coffee always seems to be 'thick black liquid'. Maybe I'm coffee-ing wrong but mine is never thick!

By late 19th C they were definitely released as “Books” to be read entirely at one time without waiting for next extract.

Saker · 29/10/2022 15:08

Another favourite one in that sort of book is "came in carrying two cups/mugs of steaming coffee/tea/chocolate".

In fact food and drink in that kind of book is always delicious and comforting like some kind of adult Enid Blyton.

Remember during the lockdown discussions on here there was a poster who said milk wasn't essential because you could use butter in your coffee instead?

Maybe that's where this comes from.

Possibly.

Pride and prejudice isn’t boring, it’s funny

Oh Mr Darcy!
Agreed- the piss is taken out of the aspiring middle classes of the era.

kateandme · 29/10/2022 15:12

I love chic lit forever and always.my current one is a corner!
Looked from beneath her eyes.
The shudder when they touched
Her heart swelled
Was her heart not broken after all
Felt his heat through her.
Kept catching eacother eyes.
Cheating ex- and realising now she found the one how bad he was
New man's child is always a darling and she falls for little Freddie instantly
There is always a fate or festival
Supportive parent or cost figure
An amazing bestie or sister
The village snob
Nobody does a big shop and all goes to the village one!
Do they ever work 9-5
Can't help but notice the hero's muscle forearms

BogRollBOGOF · 29/10/2022 15:16

I pad around. The house is carpeted, I walk on tip toe and I'm a fairly light mover... unless I'm randomly captured by a door handle 😂

I'm currently on a book where there's a fantasy world interwoven in contemporary society. No, I don't care about what brand of trainers she's wearing 🤦‍♀️

How late are we talking? He died in 1870. (I genuinely don’t know, I’m not arguing with you)

Haycorns4Piglet · 29/10/2022 15:17

I pad when I'm babysitting and I go to check on the children. I've never padded sexily in a bloke's shirt though. It seems a bit pointless to pad unless someone in the room is asleep.

Brefugee · 29/10/2022 15:18

yeah, i can't get worked up about padding - always assumed it to be the sort of barefoot mostly balls of your feet type of creeping around you do in the bedroom.

Are there any good chick-lit books? nice goofy romance story that is well written?

Leafblow · 29/10/2022 15:18

I dislike people, mostly women, said to be slipping everywhere.

She slipped into a red dress
Slipping onto a chair at the back
She slips past the window
As she slid into bed beside him

I know what they are trying to say and its meant to make her seem small and sexy rather than saying she plonked her arse on the chair. I notice it every time now and wonder why she hasn't got a good grip on anything, as if she is fully coated in lube like a giant lady slug just slipping about.

oviraptor21 · 29/10/2022 15:19

Padding is fine.
Citing your English literature degree friends who say that Jane Austen is a pile of wanky drivel is not - because they're wrong.
Jane Austen was the chick lit of her time effectively - albeit she would get the first class Eng lit degree and modern writers might scrape a 2.2.

Jane Austen? 😂

Men always cook breakfast the morning after wearing nothing but a pair of jeans with the button undone.

At one time as teenagers we lived in an old” Condemned” house in East London that was like a time capsule going back to 1870
We were also bloody starving.
There was a pile of old Mills and Boon on one of the dusty shelves, and the Heroine made the saturnine farmer a chicken sandwich, the white crusty bread 🥖 fresh from the oven, the butter fresh from the dairy
Tangy pickle scooped on..
It was like food porn.
We read that bit over and over.
Definitely comforting.
That house has been gentrified now.
Always had a nice atmosphere.

Ooh, I instantly dislike a character who "pads" 😂 Ditto any character who owns anything in "buttery soft" leather.

Yes!!!

"Buttery" is entirely the wrong way to describe leather - butter is greasy and squishy. A buttery coat sounds gross.

Soft leather is flexible, smooth, springy, warm - anything but butter-like
