To think nobody ‘pads’ in real life, is this just a book thing? Stuff you only read in books…

‘She slipped on his shirt and padded across the room ‘
Does anyone ‘pad’ in real life? I have read it 4 times this week (I’m on holiday and reading a lot of chic lit!). Why is it only used in books?

“Slick of lipgloss”
She threw her hair into a messy bun, and splashed her face with cold water, and a slick of lipgloss. There, that would have to do.
I inwardly groan loudly

BIWI · 01/11/2022 20:40

That really wasn't necessary @RambamThankyouMam

Go and snark somewhere else.

pigsDOfly · 01/11/2022 20:48

This makes about as much sense as chick lit, to be honest. Are you ok?

@RambamThankyouMam Are you ok?

What is going on in your life that you feel the need to come on a perfectly pleasant thread and put someone down like that?

There's a lot of this in certain television programmes such as Father Brown, set in the 50s, but the characters keep coming out out with phrases that were not around in the 50s.

I have a similar bugbear about series set in the past, but where they have shoved in a modern moral tale. If you want to do that, write in the present.

Although I had a similar but opposite reaction watching Outlander, where Clare (or whatever the main character was called) was clearly intended to be morally superior, where to me she just came across as smug. I had to give up on the series when she was raped and fell in love with her rapist.

Oh I gave up right at the beginning when she was raped. They should have made it look as brutal as rape is was but no they sexualised her by showing her breasts and made her look “sexy”. They didn’t need to do that. I was really disappointed as I’d heard such good things about it.

Who rapes her? The male lead - Sam whathisname?

Padding is fine.
Citing your English literature degree friends who say that Jane Austen is a pile of wanky drivel is not - because they're wrong.
Jane Austen was the chick lit of her time effectively - albeit she would get the first class Eng lit degree and modern writers might scrape a 2.2.

Exactly! How many authors writing now will be having regular film and tv adaptations of their work made hundreds of years after they died? And a million women who still watch repeats of Alicia Silverstone in Clueless every time it is repeated on tv would beg to differ with you.

Sn0tnose · 02/11/2022 20:56

@oviraptor21 Sorry, my comment wasn’t to you, it was to the pp you were replying to, who I can’t find now!

I don’t know as I never got past the first episode.

yeah, i can't get worked up about padding - always assumed it to be the sort of barefoot mostly balls of your feet type of creeping around you do in the bedroom.

Are there any good chick-lit books? nice goofy romance story that is well written?

I really like Paige Toon books - easy to read but often with an interesting angle. One thing that annoys me though is how many characters have green eyes! They are way less common in real life than the books!

Brefugee · 04/11/2022 12:40

I'm ok with green eyes - i have them and feel represented (lolz)
thanks for the rec, I'll have a look

BIWI · 04/11/2022 13:47

The book I'm reading now, the hero doesn't just have blue eyes, he has 'piercing' blue eyes. Which the author says every. single. time.

(I can't stop reading it though - I need to get to the end, even though I absolutely know what's going to happen Grin)

Westfacing · 04/11/2022 13:55

A person is thirsty so will 'drink greedily'

I can't stand it for some reason!

I feel the same about nibbling. You are not a squirrel, put down the damn nut and use your paws hands to pick up a knife and fork.

You need to chill out and read some Jackie Collins. Highly recommended.

"His phallus pure silver"
Read in 1975 or so and it still makes me laugh!

Squishable · 06/11/2022 08:54

Nipples always pebble 😂

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/11/2022 09:04

Not read the whole thread, but in many books where a character makes a cup of tea or coffee, they always hand the 'steaming mug' to another character, or pad (sic) to the cosy armchair with their 'steaming mug'. Always with the bloody 'steaming mug'. And once you notice it, it annoys you more 😂

Pride and prejudice isn’t boring, it’s funny

True. Jane Austin is of course boring to modern-day readers who want lots of breathless sex and light conversation in between. But JA was a genius at observation of social more and her books are top-notch social commentary, which is why they have lasted through the decades, and will no doubt last many decades more, when we all get bored with all the breathless sex.

My particular pet peeve in modern novels is "he/she raised one eyebrow". As well as looking in the mirror to admire/describe oneself.

Malahaha · 06/11/2022 14:52

Pinkittens · 30/10/2022 22:37

For "pad" I imagine "shuffle", but it doesn't sound as romantic!

"Pad" infers a feline, languid sexiness, not a heavy-footed clomp or scurry to get to the loo for wee like normal people do.

I definitely "pad", which to me means walk languidly, barefoot or in comfy slippers, and maybe a bit groggy, through the house. But I assure you there is NOTHING sexy about my padding! 😂 To me, it means anything other than sexy or sensual. That said, my cat pads much more sensually, and gracefully, than I do. I'm usually half asleep and fetching myself a cup of tea from the kitchen. The cat, on the other hand, is the quintessence of grace when he "pads". But also not sexy. Unless cats are sexy to you.

onlyjustme · 06/11/2022 15:12

I haven't read the replies but YES YES YES.
I think there is some glitch in the matrix that means EVERY book has to have some "padding" in it. And they do it so easily. When in reality it is quite difficult to move about silently... especially in the dark, in a strange room. Which is when it seems to mostly occur!!!
