currently stuck at a motorways service station.
there is a long queue for the chargers of which a few are not working.

imagine summer holidays. how is that going to work? train long distance and then cars/bikes locally?

At some.point in the future I'd imagine every parking space at a motorway service station will have a charger

Yes, this is the problem.

Lots of people like you just blithely assume that this will happen. I certainly wouldn't bet on it!

@LadyVictoriaSponge yes I can see this happening it’s so fucking tedious ! I don’t know what the answer is but EV certainly aren’t and Greta Thunburgh on being interviewed has said she doesn’t want to think about these as there has to be another way as in not travelling just being in your area fuck this shit I’m glad I’m older and won’t be around to see the cluster fuck of life

Like all new tech it take a few 'generations' for it to become mainstream and everyday usable. But that takes time. Sometimes a long time.
I doubt there is time before 2030 for the tech and infrastructure to mature to the extent that it is a suitable replacement for everyones needs.
I see recharging service stations popping up - like motorway service stations did back in the 60's and various petrol stations refurbing themselves to have a few fast chargers. but hanging around a service station for an hour or so every week is going to get pretty old pretty quickly compared to 5 mins tops in a petrol station.

For those that don't have private parking (and the type of private parking that can allow them to have a private charger) this is going to be a pain in the arse. Yes you can recharge in 30mins or so at a very fast charger, but the kwh unit rate is (much) more expensive the faster the charge (another poor tax) & fast charging is more detrimental to battery life.
The worse economy/tank size car i've owned got 300 miles to a tank (summer, winter, rain or shine it was the same) but i could refuel it in a few minutes - even faster now with pay at pump or apps to pay, whereas 300 miles range is still wishful thinking for current EV's (i'm sure there will be the odd model that will do that range on paper) and then they have a much longer recharge time and inconvenience if they don't have home overnight charging.

It's also not just a case of plonking a handful of chargers in parking bays at a services or supermarket, you also need the electricity network upgrades to support it. The demand from 150kw+ fast chargers soon adds up to very big demands on the supply infrastructure - you are very soon in the your own small power station territory of electrical power requirements. These upgrades are not going to happen overnight.

@user1471447863 - our id4 does 550km (340miles) on one charge in good conditions. It drops slightly in winter, but we live where it’s -minus several months of the year and snowy and it hasn’t been a problem at all so far.

Indeed an inordinate amount of time given the archaic, doom mongers and negative people on here. Although to be fair there are literally millions of people who are incapable of change and unable to see past their noses until it's forced upon them. Always able to find reasons why they can't, instead of solutions and alternatives.

I live rurally and work in community nursing covering a large rural area, I do not have a drive. Electric car is currently not going to work for us or anytime soon but I am considering a hybrid next as it would be useful when doing visits in villages etc
