To think this isn’t really enough food for a 13 year old?

DS has been given 2 slices of a supermarket pizza, 4 chicken nuggets, a handful of fries (literally about 12) and a few cucumber chunks for his dinner

I think this is nowhere near enough food for a growing teen
The adult who gave him the food thinks it’s plenty and I’m being silly

DS is far too polite to ever comment if he didn’t think it was enough but I’ve made him a sandwich and he is now eating it happily

WIBU?

I think it’s ok for a meal (not great but ok).
I think a full pizza is a bit much! Unless we are thinking about different pizzas.
Isn’t it ok to get a sandwich later if he is still hungry?

My son is 13. 1/4 pizza, 4 nuggets, small portion chips and cucumber is a perfectly reasonable meal for him. He could eat more but he has a belly he needs to grow into and shouldn't I think some teens, if very, very slim, might need more. Indonth8nk we've lost sight of reasonable portions
In this country. My kids could eat a whe pizza but its clearly not a normal portion.

Aside from that, someone who has a gastric bypass is guaranteed to have a history of disordered eating. Their experience of eating and the way they relate to food aren’t normal, and they should be aware of that fact.

They should not be coming on threads like this and presenting their post-surgery eating habits as normal.

Saying "Ah but we're all different, I'd only eat a couple of chips" without disclosing that you have a history of disordered eating and have had gastric bypass is all kinds of fucked up.

This.
I worry for that poster’s children if she has any.

My 15 year old eats less. He's not given less than that but he will eat less. He doesn't get that from me I love food. But if he was serving food he would likely give his size portions not mine. Maybe that is what this person has done.

@GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing I usually get home either as they’re eating or just finishing up on the nights their Dad cooks, on the nights he makes lunches I’m out overnight and DS tells me the next day what he has had in his lunch

Oh so this is your DH if you get home when they are eating? Why don't you just tell him to feed your son more than the 4 year old?!

PeachyPeachTrees · 07/11/2022 20:15

The 13 year old needs a slightly bigger portion and they need to have more confidence in asking for more.

This is peak MN

2 slices of pizza, 4 nuggets, a handful of chips and cucumber is going to come it at around 550 calories

A teenage boy needs approx 2,800 calories a day

can you really not see the problem?

And if the ternager has 3 meals plus snacks then that would come to 2800 calories and also 2 pizza slices a handful of chips and 4 chicken nuggets would be more calories than your saying.

Untitledsquatboulder · 10/11/2022 22:02

@Togoodtobeforgotten I think you need to show your working. What is this kid supposedly having for breakfast ? As for dinner, we'll it depends on the pizza but 550-600 calories sounds about right to me (ds has crohns and is severely underweight so I'm the world champion at calorie counting for teens).

bellac11 · 10/11/2022 22:11

I think people are massively underestimating the calories in the pizza.

I seem to have swallowed by mistake a teeny tiny Chicago small dish pizza the other week. Barely touched the sides, 417 calories, boom.

Untitledsquatboulder · 10/11/2022 22:15

As I said, I'm the world bloody expert at calorie counting so no I'm not. From what's been described up thread I'd say 200 calories a slice.

It vastly depends on the pizza.

I sometimes eat an entire supermarket pizza as a treat. It's a whopping 766 calories for the whole thing. About right for a main meal.

I can judge calories and weight just by eye, Im nearly always right

A couple of slices, perhaps 200 each, handful of chips another 200 depends on the chips though.

Theres no way of knowing what he ate for the rest of the day.

Yes some are good value (calorie wise) I have one waiting for me in the freezer, its just over 900.

Dr Oetker (poor spelling) is normally not too bad but they are very thin and very little cheese.
