To ask for a real opinion on this sketch

First time really sketching, this is my second one. Really enjoying it and people are saying the sketch is good (obviously not a masterpiece 🤣). But these people I'm showing are my friends and family.

Can I ask real opinions on whether this is any good and whether I show any promise in doing sketching? Obviously it's my second picture and I have no idea what I'm doing so the lips are fucked, I'm sure the shading is horrendous. And the hair isn't done.

How do you get better at this stuff? Just practice?

Thanks in advance

Great start at drawing.

yes you practice and then practice some more. Lessons can help a lot too.

SpookyPanda · 28/10/2022 17:21

Are you going for realistic or a different style?

Are you going for realistic or a different style?

I honestly don't even know at this point 🤣

Fair enough! It's way better than I could do.

Geepee71 · 28/10/2022 17:22

I really like it.
I think like anything practice is always going to help, but it looks good and if you're enjoying it, keep on doing it.

Aprilx · 28/10/2022 17:22

I think your sketch shows that you have ability.

SkylightSkylight · 28/10/2022 17:24

Do it because you enjoy the process and the end result will change over time.

DillDanding · 28/10/2022 17:25

I think the most important thing is you enjoy it. Keep practicing and you’ll get better.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 17:27

I like it - you’ve got basic ability - but it also has life and energy.

There will be classes and groups near you and the same online. Find somewhere you like I would, you’ll have a community and people to learn from.

Newusernameaug · 28/10/2022 17:29

You tube is your friend!

BeanieTeen · 28/10/2022 17:30

You get better by just practising! Keep going if you enjoy it.
I would say that what you’ve drawn looks very much unfinished - so it’s tricky to judge whether it’s ‘good’. As a pp said it depends what look you’re going for, but without more pencil detail I would assume you’ve not finished or that you were actually planning on adding colour so I’d say ‘good start’.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 28/10/2022 17:31

Have you got a local art class/group you can join to practice and learn techniques?

BodGaoithe · 28/10/2022 17:33

If you’re going for realism, eyes need to be halfway down the head (unless it’s someone with an out of proportion head like Adam Driver.)
Eyes should also fit 5 times across the head. (The bit between the eyes and the temples should be the same width as the eyes you have drawn.)

pumpkinelvis · 28/10/2022 17:33

I don't have an artistic bone in my body so I think it's great!

knittingaddict · 28/10/2022 17:33

It's definitely a good start and shows promise. The left eye is slightly too high, so learning about facial proportions would be useful to you.

KatherineJaneway · 28/10/2022 17:41

I really like it, well done

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 28/10/2022 17:44

I think these are cool. Youtube if you're looking to improve techniques or experiment. Well done!

oakleaffy · 28/10/2022 17:50

As PP have said, Facial proportions are important- This girl has no place for her brains to go!
Even in cartoons, basic proportions are important
Thelwell and Giles were great Draughtsmen, their cartoons were great.
Practice and lessons in proportions help

Unless it’s abstract, then it doesn’t matter.

BMW6 · 28/10/2022 17:52

Looks rather like Anime - Japanese cartoon

AnApparitionQuipped · 28/10/2022 17:54

I think it shows potential.

NumptiesIncorporated · 28/10/2022 17:55

You've really got potential. Stick at it.

If you Google 'art then and now' in images, you can see how artists have developed over time.

That's a great start.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 28/10/2022 18:02

27 years an art teacher

Great first attempt and use of shade.

Proprtion:
eyes 1/2 way down head-pupils
mouth and nose equi distant apart from eyeliner and chin.
edges of mouth sit under pupils in eyes
ears go from eyebrow to bottom of nose.
Hair comes over the top of the head from the crown, so it’s not flat to the head. If you think how the whirl at the back of your head grows it travels round and over to one side.

My DDs drawing ability is fantastic and your sketch looks like something she did in her earlier days. So if this is only your second one, then it’s really good.

I remember she had books about the proportion for doing faces and would lightly draw some lines first so everything sat in the right place ie tops of ears line up with eyes (I think?). A website called Deviant Art might interest you. I don’t know why it was called that, people just post their artwork and others send comments, it was a very supportive place. If it’s still going, you might find your tribe there.

But keep practising and have fun.

Oh and my DD eventually switched from pen and paper to digital and this is now how she earns a living.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 28/10/2022 18:27

It’s good - keep going!

As others have said it’s all about practice. I notice that when I draw every day I become better and more fluid. When I don’t, it can feel like it’s gone a bit to ratshit! It’s quite important not to get discouraged when you can’t quite achieve the results you imagine your head - all creative endeavours can be frustrating and disheartening at times, and there’ll be days when you definitely won’t want to show off your work, but to get better you need to be resilient and keep going.

There’s a ton of amazing and inspirational stuff on YouTube, with tutorials from basic level up to advanced skills. The artists on there are very generous with their time and knowledge. You can learn just by watching other people’s processes, and online art communities are very encouraging and supportive.

inthemornin · 29/10/2022 16:19

That's it finished messed up the hair etc but I'm happy enough with it.
