What is WRONG with people? It's 2022!

Over the past couple of weeks, ALOT of things when out and about has been getting on my last nerves, it's almost like people just think they walk the earth alone and are not considerate for anybody around them!

EVERYTIME I go to Tesco I can guarantee that at least one person will come and stand right in front of me when I am looking at something - literally plonk themselves right in front of me like I'm not there! I always make a point to stand so I'm not blocking the way for others to walk behind me but also that I've left enough space for others to grab and go from the shelf.

I was in Primark yesterday looking at some basic jumpers on the folded table and there was an ENTIRE table to walk around but no no, I'll let you guess where she came a stood.

I finished work yesterday and was walking down Oxford St with a friend and then BAM the women in front of me just stopped so obviously I went into the back of her and I hurt my nose because of the impact so I said to her "Yes please, just stop walking in the middle of the street".

Shopping Centers is another ache up my backside with people just stopping when they're walking.

I was in a different Primark recently and the women behind me was so close for the 20 minutes we were queuing that I was practically grinding her! Then when I was waiting for my turn to be called to a till, she overtook me and went to the till so I chased her and said excuse me a few times which she ignored!

Another time in Primark, a teenager walked up to the disabled tills bypassing the huge queue, paid and walked off laughing to her friend and saying "idiots looks at them all queuing" so it was clear she was faking it because then she was running around Primark playing tag with her group of friends and then booting it up the escalators on the wrong way racing her friends.

My lord, what is wrong with people? Does anybody find this happens to them too or does this just happen to me?

I handle it by getting up close and doing straight talking:

  • stand in my way while i'm looking at shelves in supermarket, not blocking the aisle: "you are in my way, please move"
  • same in a clothes shop: "i was looking at those, please move"
  • stop dead on a busy pavement so i bump into them: -shove- "don't do that, it's unsafe for you"
  • stop dead at the top of an escalator? I will gently push you out of the way because you're making it dangerous

and so on and so forth. But I'm gobby, old and i have no fucks to give for rude people

I also have no fucks for rude people. I personally find it rude to "shove" someone who is in your way before you have said "excuse me please" and if you did that to me on an escalator I'd shove you back (down). I have indeed done this and it's almost always older ladies who have decided they "give zero fucks any more" but don't like coming across someone younger and fitter who also gives no fucks when push comes to shove. One of us will end up with a broken hip and lost handbag, and it isn't me.

@Anamechangeisasgoodasarest 👏🏼 🤣

Just to clear this up.

I was walking and talking to my friend, the person stopped and was looking at someone on their phone, I didn't notice (yes because I was talking) but I wasn't 'close' - yes I should have been look ahead but why is someone standing in middle of a footpath?! MOVE TO THE SIDE

So you were walking along FaceTiming ?

musicviking1 · 28/10/2022 17:28

I know what you mean, I feel like I am invisible sometimes. I always find that as soon as I start looking at a rail of clothing it's guaranteed someone will literally stand in front of me to get to the same rail, it's as if they think they are missing out on something. Another thing that annoys me is when I'm trying to pay at the supermarket, people love to stand with their trolley almost up my arse. Move the hell back! Thankfully I am very assertive so they get told to do one or to move...the way I see it if they don't care about offending me then why should I care about offending them.

What were you buying? Do you actually need any of it? If not, just don’t buy!

Fake economy primark. I assumed your multiple visits were returning clothing that had disintegrated during the first wash

and here come the Primark snobs out en masse!

I bought a lovely turqouise blazer there the other day, ok, I don't shop there a lot, but if you're on a budget it has some fairly good basics, including bras, underwear, pyjamas, jeans, bedsocks, even a couple of long sleeved jumpers. All of this has stayed in fairly good shape.

"...just stopped so obviously I went into the back of her and I hurt my nose because of the impact so I said to her "Yes please, just stop walking in the middle of the street".

2 Questions:

How fast were you walking?
& how big is your nose?

Sorry OP but youve brightened up my Friday afternoon!!

xox

Noseybonk?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2022 17:31

@Anamechangeisasgoodasarest , yes, and ‘everytime’, too. Autocorrect knew and tried to separate them!

Not snobby to think a shop is shitty

woodhill · 28/10/2022 17:31

Misty999 · 28/10/2022 14:34

But why do you need to stand if front of things looking at them just grab what you need and move on. Some of us don't have all day to stand around looking at things. If you want to stand at look at things that's fine but don't get angry when I lean over you because I've already decided that's what I want.

Yes have to agree to some extent

SuffolkUnicorn · 28/10/2022 17:34

I’ve been saying stuff like this for years

its not just you

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/10/2022 17:45

Razzle5 · 28/10/2022 17:31

Not snobby to think a shop is shitty

I'm not a fan of Primark on the whole at all.

But for some people, it's all they can afford and therefore a lot of it, isn't shitty. It's what they can afford.

So therefore, to my mind, you are being snobby if you think it's shitty without necessarily having been inside/bought something when you cannot afford anything else.

Maggiethe · 28/10/2022 17:48

I always get asked questions as if I work there…. Wearing flip flops and sunglasses…. Sportswear… don’t get it

Oysterbabe · 28/10/2022 18:03

Yes it's 2022, why are you spending so much time in shops? Online shopping has none of these problems.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/10/2022 18:12

I think spatial awareness has declined in the past couple of years, probably from either not going out or from places being very quiet for a prolonged period. Plus a layer of most people seeming to be depleted and in survival mode.

My spatial awareness bugbears are those who pick the narrowest place to stop such as doorways or where the stock trolley blocks the aisle. Those who abandon their trolley at a strange angle to block the aisle as effectively as usual. Those who walk in formation across the whole bloody path and will not fold in to let others pass. Those who take up the whole path with an extension lead- made worse by soaring dog ownership.

Awareness of other road users is also worse. Today I've had two people attempt to turn right at me from side roads while I've driven straight on down the main road (at the going rate within the speed limit). One just didn't look and stopped in time on from the right hand side. The other crossed my path then panicked that she had parked cars and I had to brake while she worked out if she could get through the gap while partially blocking my half of the carriageway. It's a big car with sidelights, it's not hard to spot it if you're looking!

Topseyt123 · 28/10/2022 18:12

Primark is shit and uses a lot of sweatshop labour in the Far East.

Alot is not a word. It is two words. Ditto for Everytime.

There! That feels better now. 😃.

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/10/2022 18:16

@BogRollBOGOF I think its tolerance for the quirks of others that has declined over the last few years, not spatial awareness.

bonzaitree · 28/10/2022 16:52

You're in London.

Enough said - people are rude AF there. Maybe you're only just noticing.

oh the irony!!

Maggiethe · 28/10/2022 17:48

I was once trying on some party shoes in New Look and was asked if I knew where the menswear was. I replied "I dunno, isn't it in a seperate unit on the other side of the road?" and they gave me a filthy look for my efforts to help!

30s later I saw a member of staff who was also wearing jeans and a black top.
I guess they thought I was an inept member of staff not a similarly clueless member of the public.

A thank you wouldn't have gone amiss too.

PollyCreo · 28/10/2022 18:23

There are 67 million people in the UK, of course it's crowded! You should do a Mariah Carey and demand they close Primark down for your exclusive use 😉

PearlclutchersInc · 28/10/2022 18:25

Strawberrypicnic · 28/10/2022 15:08

I live in London, the worst thing I find is that people will be walking 3 or 4 abreast across the pavement and you are literally forced to step into the road because they don't break form. They usually seem oblivious. Also when there's only space for one person to go through a gap/doorway at once and you give way to people and they don't even look at you. It is really mystifying. Im sure all these people don't think of themselves as rude people. It is worse since covid too I think.

I use a wheelchair... OH gives no quarter and pushes me right at people who do that.

There have been some near misses😬

Lcb123 · 28/10/2022 18:28

Then stop going shopping! I only go in the most unavoidable situation.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 28/10/2022 18:32

EdaYildiz · 28/10/2022 17:12

We can go back and forth until the cows come home with this one.

The argument is why did she stop in the middle of the street? Whether or not it was me, but someone would have eventually bumped into her somehow if she kept on standing there.

Don’t be daft OP - people can stop where they like, (other than right at the top or bottom of an escalator), and everyone else should be looking where they are going!

BogRollBOGOF · 28/10/2022 18:34

Untitledsquatboulder · 28/10/2022 18:16

@BogRollBOGOF I think its tolerance for the quirks of others that has declined over the last few years, not spatial awareness.

Is it reasonable for people not to look around them and realise that they're blocking places up or just look and move a couple of feet so that people can carry on about their business?

I could take up formation walking with my family and fail to move for others. I could obstruct doorways. I could just plonk my trolley where I feel like it so that others struggle to get past it when shopping. I'm not convinced that it would make the world a better place if I stopped being aware of other people around me though.

Some people clearly struggle. Some may have hidden disabilities. I'm not rude to them. But statistically most people will not have hidden impairments (I have a DC with autism and dyspraxia so I put effort in to training him to observe his surroundings) and a large proportion of people just don't look around them.
