Are the online ones prescribed for this infection?
If so, take them (all of them).
If they are random ones from a previous illness, you need to make a GP appointment, and get the right ones for this infection. When you are getting that script, take both old sets of antibiotics to the pharmacy, and ask them to dispose them for you.

UTI leads to Kidney Infection. Kidney Infection leads to Sepsis. I cam assure you, that is no walk in the park. I was ill for weeks, had to take a combination of antibiotics a lot stronger than those you will need at this point. I was hours away from ITU with a partner that had been watching me like a hawk!!

FusilliPasta · 27/10/2022 21:23

Thanks all. I have decided not to take either and have got a phone call with a GP in the morning.

If you're prescribed antibiotics for a UTI take them. I've had a kidney infection and it's incredibly dangerous. I've never felt so ill in my life, even when I had cancer. You need to get the right prescription and take the antibiotics

Sapphire387 · 27/10/2022 21:36

Good choice, OP. Speak to your doc tomorrow. In the meantime, plenty of water.

Heronwatcher · 27/10/2022 21:48

Just seen your last post- definitely see your GP before taking anything. Take a recent sample in a sterile pot or do one when you arrive. It’s really important to take the correct antibiotic for a UTI. Your GP should test your sample then and there but also send a sample off so cultures can be grown on it. They may start you off on one antibiotic but then change it once the results of the culture growing (usually takes 48 hours I think). This would be perfectly normal. And it’s incredibly unlikely that taking any antibiotic for such a short space of time would result in anything anywhere near as serious as kidney infections or sepsis.

Absc · 27/10/2022 21:52

If it’s confirmed uti then you will have to take antibiotics. I have regular utis which have led to sepsis in the past. It’s not worth the risk not to.

PinkButtercups · 27/10/2022 22:09

Not taking them can lead to much worse things..

Honestly. One girl locally had an untreated water infection. She died aged 18.

Antibiotics are really important and infections can be seriously dangerous.

Not to scare you but just take your AB's!

Sux2buthen · 27/10/2022 22:32

Definitely calm your doctor and get prescribed something safe.
I'm actually allergic to trimethoprim, the effects of taking that gave me a very fetching duck face accompanied by sickness and a rash. The day I was supposed to meet my then boyfriends parents.

I’m a long term frequent sufferer of UTI ‘s I’ve had every antibiotic going and personally I’d say trimethoprim was the least troublesome for side effects , I don’t think I noticed any. Drink lots of water - as you should anyway and nibble ginger biscuits and plain crisps to stave off any nausea ( imagined or otherwise) and you’ll be grand ! I do sympathise as I have HA too and research everything and wind myself up but I wouldn’t think twice about taking these!

I agree with this too. No side effects for me with these tablets, I’ve taken lots of antibiotics for urine infections over the years and never had any bad side effects. I would most definitely take them. UTIs can worsen and end up with a kidney infection if left and even if it doesn’t get this far they are extremely painful.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/10/2022 22:39

Dishwashersaurous · 27/10/2022 21:10

Have you actually be prescribed antibiotics by an actual real.doctor? If so, take them. If not, then obviously dont

This is sound advice. Given the rising antibiotic resistance I'm amazed you've been able to buy the online in order to have them in stock.

RampantIvy · 27/10/2022 22:42

I'm glad you are being sensible. As pp have pointed out untreated UTIs can end up as kidney infections that can cause permanent kidney damage. A UTI won't go away without treatment, so it is very important that you take the appropriate antibiotics and finish the course.

Luckingfovely · 27/10/2022 22:43

If you'd rather just have a UTI until it escalates, why did you bother getting the antibiotics in the first place?

I've read some stupid things on this platform in my time, but this might just cap it all.

Either you have an infection and you need antibiotics to solve it, or you don't.

The side effects are minimal in comparison to the alternative, and negligible in most cases.

I'm not completely convinced you know what a UTI is - if you did, you'd be screaming for anything that could possibly help you. Including modern medicine. Because, it's 2022, you know.

oh good grief. You do know there are lots of different antibiotics, all with different side effects. If one doesn't agree with the OP and makes her more ill then she is entitled to call the GP and ask for a different one.

Or did you really think there's only one antibiotic?

2Rebecca · 27/10/2022 22:50

Most micro labs only accept urine samples if the infection hasn't responded to nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim. I presume you consulted someone to get an antibiotic. That was a waste of time wasn't it. You have an appropriate antibiotic for a UTI. Take it or don't but stopping someone else having a GP consultation so you can go round in circles and have the same discussion tomorrow is a waste.

OutDamnedSpot · 27/10/2022 22:56

I sympathise OP. I get repeated UTIs and have an awful reaction to Macrobid. For me, it really is better not to take it. I now have a repeat prescription for a different med so that I can keep it at home in case of UTIs. Speak to your gp tomorrow and see if they can do the same for you.

longer term, have you tried D Manosse? It really helps me.

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 27/10/2022 22:56

Just take the bloody things

Cw112 · 27/10/2022 22:58

Remember the side effects are only listed to cover the backsides of the people who make the medicine and the chance of you actually experiencing the severe side effects is super super rare. In terms of the more common ones like an upset tummy or the runs, that could happen but having an untreated uti would be much worse, much more painful and could lead to more serious problems so I would take the antibiotics. I'd also bin anything that's out of date in your cupboard and don't use it.

FusilliPasta · 27/10/2022 23:04

The one I got online for such occasions is also out of date (completely legal and appropriate, been possible for years now), so thank you vipers for your nasty comments but I do not feel comfortable taking out of date medication, particularly one I’ve never taken before and could have a nasty reaction to.

i am currently in the bath trying to ease the pain.

i can assure you this is not my first rodeo and I know how bloody awful they are. I have never not had antibiotics on day 1, all the nhs advice says to wait 48 hours before taking antibiotics so I thought I was being sensible. Ultimately I should have taken the midnight consult because lord knows I won’t be sleeping.

OP posts:
ColonelRhubarbBikini · 27/10/2022 23:08

A lot of pharmacies will now test urine, confirm the presence of bacteria and issue a course of antibiotics in simple cases (between 16-60, no long term health conditions such as diabetes, not pregnant or breastfeeding etc).

I’d find your closest one and take a sample. The pharmacist would be the best person to talk to about your anxiety with regards to the side effects as well because as amazing as GPs are pharmacists are all about the meds. They know them in and out and will be able to assure you.

Please don’t delay seeking treatment. UTIs can turn nasty if not dealt with.

suzyscat · 27/10/2022 23:44

I wouldn't mess about when it comes to UTIs or mastitis.

FusilliPasta · 27/10/2022 21:23

Thanks all. I have decided not to take either and have got a phone call with a GP in the morning.

You'll start feeling loads better once you start taking the antibiotics. For me, when it went from being a UTI to kidney infection, I started vomiting and had the worst back pain of my life, if you get those symptoms before bring able to speak to a doctor then go to A&E

thaegumathteth · 27/10/2022 23:48

Drink absolutely loads. Also to avoid future infections take d mannose.
