I have a massive bedroom in quite a basic house and am investigating the possibility of getting an en suite fitted. Any advice? Tia

How will the plumbing tie in with the existing stuff? How will it be ventilated? Is your hot water tank big enough to cope with the additional demand?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/10/2022 19:17

Where will the waste pipe go?

MassiveSalad22 · 27/10/2022 19:18

I’d have a no poo rule personally, can’t think of anything worse than being roused from sleep by DH’s morning poo. My mum put that thought into my head after her personal lived experience with their en suite 🤢

tingalayo · 27/10/2022 19:22

Lol you can put anything in AIBU as long as you put "to ask" on the front

I would seriously consider just having a shower (plus toilet and sink!) in there, rather than a bath as well. A bath takes up a lot of room and, in my case, is never used.

BHRK · 27/10/2022 19:24

I have a big en suite and it’s my sanctuary.. I love a long bath up there, we use the shower daily etc. They are great if you really want one

Ktjc · 27/10/2022 19:43

Get the biggest shower you can-ours was designed for a corner shower that when I stood in it in B&Q felt like standing in a coffin. Ours is massive and well worth the space!

AlwaysLatte · 27/10/2022 20:07

We decided not to put in a shower as we have others and this one is meant to be a calm space. The house is very old and had a lovely big old freestanding Victorian bath so we had it professionally re enamelled and painted it when we redecorated. I love it!

Seashor · 27/10/2022 20:52

I second getting the biggest shower tray you can. I absolutely LOVE my en suite. I’ve got blu tooth, a heated mirror, heated towel rail, as well as under floor heating. A jungle shower ( or whatever they’re called) as well as jets and a wall mounted shower. It’s absolutely brilliant.

StoneofDestiny · 27/10/2022 21:06

I've no complaints about my en suite - it has a window as well as an up to date air ventilation system. Powerful shower, good flooring and heated towel rail - and it's at the opposite end of the room to the bed.
These features I'd want in any en-suite.

mrsmarmalade12 · 27/10/2022 21:19

Probably not what you're looking for but we have a 'don't poo in the en suit' rule

SerenaTee · 27/10/2022 21:23

If you can work it so it’s not an en-suite but a seperate bathroom, do it! It adds more value to your property (according to a couple of estate agents who valued our house) and means guests can use it without having to go through your bedroom.

Cornishmumofone · 27/10/2022 21:36

I have an en suite, but would much prefer a walk in wardrobe or some other sort of clothing storage.

Sunandflowers · 27/10/2022 21:38

I think having a window in the en-suite is really quite important. It aires so much better and feels less a part of bedroom.

Mezmer · 27/10/2022 21:43

Do not and I repeat do not have the door opening out into your bedroom! You’ll be woken up by your partner using it in the night, you’ll get steam and wafts coming in. The flush going. The fan going. If I couldn’t make it so that the en-suite door opened out onto an area separate to my bedroom I would not have one.

Luckydog7 · 27/10/2022 21:47

Second turning it into a second bathroom rather then ensuite. We did exactly that. Its adjacent to the bedroom in our converted loft. No poo problem and just as convenient to get to in the night as the door is next to outer bedroom door. When the kids grow up they can use it without coming into the room.

Also yes to big shower ours is 1200x800 which is lovely. Also get a solid concrete/ceramic tray not a plastic tray that has any give, they always leak eventually. Also top tip, make sure the installer seals in the tray before installing the enclosure. Many leaks happen when water gets into the frame and runs down the gap in the seal because they did all the silicone in one hit at the end.

The one piece of advice I will give anyone fitting any type of bathroom. DO NOT BUY SQUARE TOILETS.

why?:)

caggie3 · 27/10/2022 22:05

Because we do not have square bums and you will regret your life choices every uncomfortable wee or poo you have. It's been 2 years and I still hate them. So uncomfortable Sad

Purpleberet · 27/10/2022 22:05

If you’re not sure yet whether to do it I agree with pp make it a separate bathroom. I find en-suites so weird. Will it really be so much less convenient for it to be a separate room

I had them fitted into our bathrooms (also 2 years ago!) and can't say that I have noticed.

Haha I also agree with this, square toilets are so weird! I personally also think they are really ugly. Also a lot of square sinks I’ve found to be impractical in reality

WorrieaboutFIL · 27/10/2022 22:12

How much have you been quoted OP ?(£10k here)!

AlwaysLatte · 27/10/2022 22:17

We're quite lucky in that you have to walk through a walk in wardrobe area to get to the bathroom, so the fan isn't so noisy. But definitely get the quietest fan as it's really loud at night!

We’ve moved into a rental with a Jack and Jill bathroom and the doors to the bedroom are bloody saloon doors with huge gaps at the top and bottom so using the bathroom is a nightmare if the other person is in bed, and there’s a no poo rule at all up there which means you have to go upstairs or to the loo by the kitchen. I bloody HATE IT. Bathroom is amazing but Jesus. Can’t wait to move.
