I have a massive bedroom in quite a basic house and am investigating the possibility of getting an en suite fitted. Any advice? Tia

You can spend an awful lot on bathrooms, but you really don't need to to get the look you want if you're prepared to shop around. Think about longevity, it's expensive to retile a bathroom so go for something that won't date too quickly. Personally I think white is a good bet, it's light and you can change the colour of the towels, add artificial plants etc when you fancy a change. I've gone for large rectangular white tiles with a white textured border to add a bit of interest.

Pay attention to the footprint of the toilet. I've just redone two bathrooms and made them a little smaller, to increase the size of the bedrooms. I found toilets that projected 6 cm less into the room, (still very fit for purpose), which made it feel more spacious. Make sure the toilet has a bit of space either side, I recently stayed somewhere where it was tight in the corner and that wasn't comfortable.

Good luck OP.

Shower, basin, loo, extractor fan and window if possible (a no poo rule is stupid imo - that’s what a loo is for) but if you have the room, have a walk-thru dressing room to get to the en-suite - that way you’ll be protected in your bedroom by 2 doors as well as the extractor/window combination!

There is not a chance I have the energy to impose a no poo rule. The toilet would be for family use only. If you can't shit in your own home then I don't think it's much of a home.

It’s a non starter if you cannot get access to a waste pipe. Do NOT go for a macerator toilet no matter what a plumber suggests. The are still shit (excuse the pun).

Quietest extractor you can find. Spend money to get a decent one. Will it have a window? If not again spend the money on decent extractors and don’t use paint on the walls in case of condensation stains.

Okay. Will do. No way will it have a window.

Ideally a window. Also, slightly odd but I would get tiling to the floor, we have skirting boards which are now rotting near shower as the wood has got wet.

Thanks everyone. I agree about it being basic. There won't be a window. No possibility of it being a Jack n Jill bathroom. I didn't know about no rim toilets. Waste pipe shouldn't be too tricky, the main bathroom is directly behind the space.

If you insist on no window, then please take great care to manage the inevitable vapour/condensation. You need a really, really, really top-spec extractor fan and perhaps a dehumidifier also. Otherwise the little room itself will be terribly prone to mould, and escaping vapour into bedroom will make that room - and your bedding/clothes - dank and musty also.
Personally, as a previous poster implied, I hate the idea of going to bed in a lavatory. Because, even if you can't see the loo, you will smell it, however faintly. I promise ...

I've got a wet room so I just walk round the wall to get to a shower. No annoying doors or curtains. Underfloor heating plus a nice towel radiator. Decent sized storage cupboard for towels and toiletries. Two levels of light so I can just a very dim light if I need the loo in the night

Thank you. I have no alternative place to put a second toilet. This is a more manageable solution than moving house. I can't afford to move house so that isn't an option. My choices are to stay as we are or build an ensuite. There is only one place the ensuite can go and absolutely no way that it can accommodate windows. I am not being fussy or insistent. There is no other possibility.
