To be annoyed at Prince Harry's memoir title SPARE

benisright · 27/10/2022 13:25

I have zero interest in this couple who seem to enjoy making a living on moaning about how they are poorly treated in Britain. Just saw the headline news and the cover of Harry's memoir with his face and one single word SPARE.

Get a life for goodness sake. I'm about his age and never once thought of him as a spare. He kinda invented his own tale.

I recently read 'Traitor King' about the Abdication of the Duke of Windsor. Really interesting book and the parallels to the current situation with the Sussexes are really interesting.

They seemingly left for a private life but then started doing quasi royal tours, wrote books, gave interviews - presented them as global humanitarians. The Duke of Windsor actually thought he was going to achieve world peace by averting the Second World War.

Ooh I’d love to give that a read - I’m fascinated by Royal history and Uncle David and Aunty Wallis were the closest the monarchy has ever come to destruction. I’d love to see a Crown-style series depicting the events of the abdication.

It does seem like a terribly self-pitying framing, given his enormous privilege and wealth. He's hardly a second-class citizen, is he?

I think ow ever much money you have, it is still pretty miserable , to grow up knowing you will never be as important as your sibling. I think there is a similar issue between Sofia and Leonor

Oh my heart bleeds. This happens in WC families. It happens in families where children have disabilities. Harry isn’t any more special or noteworthy than these people just because he’s posh and famous.

candykittensareoverrated · 27/10/2022 13:29

It’s awful. Demonstrates how much of a victim he thinks he is. I am fed up of the victim narrative

Agree, he really does. And the quite small percentage of the £18 million he received up front for it to 'donate' to charity was laughable.

Anonymouseposter · 27/10/2022 15:36

All his family including his mother called him that. How exactly do you know that? I’m another one who would have respected him if he had just gone off to live a private life but he just continues to court publicly despite his expressed dislike of the press. He knows they’ll be all over it.

HellonHeels · 27/10/2022 15:37

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 27/10/2022 13:55

It’s a well known phrase as others have noted.

I think it’s clever, plus I think he is a victim and I can’t imagine how I’d have felt growing up under such a spotlight, losing my mum, being called ‘Spare’ by my family (and the wider world) and having my family unable to hide their distain for my wife.

I too would be in a lot of therapy.

This! I'm no fan of the royals but death of a parent at a young age is an appalling and life-changing event. All the more so when your grief is required to be put on public display. I imagine he had a horrific childhood and is carrying a lot of scars.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 27/10/2022 15:39

I might start calling DC2 ‘Spare’ 😂

The whole nicknames thing - family jokes that people enjoy with each other can often sound cruel to outsiders. I remember someone on here years ago got told off in public for calling her red-haired DD Ginge but it was a nickname that her DD partook in and OP was surprised other people were shocked on her DD’s behalf.

Fundays12 · 27/10/2022 15:40

I wish him and his wife would learn some self resort, dignity, silence and humility. They seem to live in a different planet to most of the world. Anyway at £28 a book I suspect the audience is already limiting in who can afford to buy it. Many people are struggling to buy food and keep there house warm spending that on a book is a luxury many cannot afford now. Sadly though he was allegedly called the spare by some family members which is a disgusting term to call any child.

Waterstones are selling ore orders for £14 (I got an email from them)

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/10/2022 15:43

It's an arresting title but does not seem to indicate that he has taken heed of the fact that most people think he is whining and wallowing in victimhood when he actually lives a life of extreme privilege

I'm so sick of him living in his bubble of navel-gazing, self pitying nonsense

Like father like son ... also like mother when it comes to manipulating the media (or trying to)

L0bstersLass · 27/10/2022 15:44

Sparkletastic · 27/10/2022 13:41

Great title IMO
Punchy and memorable

And controversial. It gets people talking about it.
It's an excellent choice of title.

WarmWinterSun · 27/10/2022 15:44

The title is clever but it is also a sad way for Harry to describe himself. It is a shame that he couldn’t have a more positive title and I suppose this gives a strong hint about the content of his book. He has such an incredible platform and I wish he and Meghan could find a less toxic and less self-pitying way to use that platform. Alternatively it would be lovely if they could just find happiness without all the public displays of bitterness. I think they both need lots of time to heal and recover but they are in too much of a hurry to build their brand and capitalise on their fame.

Untitledsquatboulder · 27/10/2022 15:45

I think it's a good title.

But… he is more noteworthy than all those people. That’s like saying ‘Katie Price shouldn’t have a memoir, she’s no more noteworthy than anyone else!’ Do I think she’s interesting? Not particularly. But being famous DOES make you more noteworthy (and therefore more likely to sell books) than some random person.

Kanaloa · 27/10/2022 15:48

And it’s obviously a good title because it’s got people who are supposedly not interested whatsoever in Harry starting online threads about the book. So it’s quite clearly an eye catching title.

Crimeismymiddlename · 27/10/2022 15:48

I love how entertaining they are, in the worst possible sense. They grifted multiple millions out of massive companies for what looks like unwatchable boring rubbish and every so often pop up to cry for the general public.
Personally prefer Meagan, she has to put up with the victimised, unintelligent child that is Harry. I do not doubt the RF is dysfunctional, like all family’s but now is not the time to share,

bewarethetides · 27/10/2022 15:49

peaceandove · 27/10/2022 15:20

I'm so sick of him living in his bubble of navel-gazing, self pitying nonsense. Literally, millions of people grow up in real hardship, real poverty, losing parents young, abuse, no access to education or healthcare. The list goes on and on and on. They didn't choose their incredibly difficult lives, either. At least Harry's <cough> incredibly difficult life <cough> was immeasurably more comfortable and secure and, you know, non life threatening than most.

Even his much lauded intense love of the military, the 'only place he felt truly at home' just highlighted how incredibly entitled and selfish he was. All the time he was in Afghanistan, supposedly risking life & limb and being a proper, little soldier - he had a contingent of special forces bodyguards and a waiting helicopter to whisk him to safety at the first sniff of trouble. He blithely put everyone else around him in danger, just by being there.

Yep

jannier · 27/10/2022 15:50

All people with estates to inherit are taught that to do their duty they hsve an heir and a spare. As the spare yout portant until the heir has their own heir and your importance diminishes as they have more.
Royalty us even more restricted becouse your life is mapped out and as the importance diminishes so does your work. Its why Princess Margaret struggled so much and turned to partying ...no role in life abymore but still denied the right to choose her own path....she was the spare discarded whrn no longer needed. Hes the same now.

That's interesting because the news were reporting it was £28 a book which seemed very expensive. I think £14 is still a lot though for many people.

Wheresthebeach · 27/10/2022 15:52

I struggle with the endless self pity from a pair of incredibly rich, privileged individuals. Heir and a spare is a pretty common saying in their circles, and its a shame that he's coming across as so bitter. Its not personal, it's a fact of his position in the line of succession and by now, you'd think he'd had the time and maturity to see it that way. You don't see Anne complaining, or writing books about it. She just got on with doing the work she valued. After all, he's insanely rich due to it. If it's so awful, he should renounce his place in the line of succession, renounce his titles, refuse titles for his children (like Anne) and get a job (or not...as the millions he's got are enough to live off of in luxury).

Having said that - I think its a great photo of him, and a striking book cover.

Canthave2manycats · 27/10/2022 15:53

I wouldn't read it if they were giving the book away free. Anyway, the content will be all over the media.

I think it's an excruciatingly embarrassing, petulant and self-pitying title, which no doubt is representative of his 'truth'/crap it's going to contain. It's worth nothing that Harry never appeared to consider himself a victim until Me-gain came along and told him that he was! He should consider himself lucky to have been the "spare" - he and his family have much more freedom in life than William and his family ever will have. I cannot imagine how it must feel to be brought up in the knowledge that being the monarch is your destiny, and your eldest child's destiny too.

The country has had a lucky escape too - imagine if that pair were to be the next King and Queen!! shudders

Harry seems to forget that he wasn't the only one to lose his mother, and if she hadn't dispensed with royal protection, and had worn a seatbelt, then maybe she would be alive today. Someone mentioned the issue of his parentage up-thread - well that would never have been called into question if 'Saint' Diana hadn't been shagging her 'riding' (in more ways than one!) instructor!!

I used to really like Harry, and I loved how close he was to William and Kate. William could have done with his support in life. He's basically given up everything he knew for his current wife - when they split up, when she finds someone of more value to her, he will be royally screwed. He's betrayed his own family - not even giving a flying one that the Queen has just died - and his children will be forever living in America. Silly boy.

Meghan is of incredibly superior intelligence to Harry and I picture her very much talking to him like people do to ‘Harry’ in The Windsors 😂

Whataretheodds · 27/10/2022 13:28

It's a reference to the phrase 'Heir and spare' that royal brides are expected to produce. William is the Heir. Harry is the spare. So it makes sense as the title for his autobiography.

What's your issue with it?

This.

It’s a 50% off offer apparently. I would spend £14 on a book I really wanted to read immediately TBF
