Posting for traffic.

How soon did you go home after your C-section? Would you have preferred to go home sooner or stay for longer, and why?

Interested to hear from people who had both ELCS and EMCS.

Thanks.

I had two quite different experiences.

First time I was kept in for 4 days as it was my first baby and I was struggling to establish feeding and still quite unwell and felt faint. I couldn’t wait to get out of there! The midwives were horrible, the care was dire and they kept trying to force me to formula feed my baby. It was also so hot and my sleep was disturbed by others all night long.

Second time they turfed me out exactly 48 hours afterwards. I could have happily stayed another few days. The midwives were lovely and I was enjoying being fed and just sleeping and cuddling and feeding without my gorgeous but very demanding toddler around.

First - Stayed 5 days following emergency section. I needed it as in a lot of pain.

Second - stayed 10 days after planned section due to post op complications which made me very unwell

It was the right length of time for me both times.

They only sent me home with ibuprofen, paracetamol and anti-coagulant jabs

That’s what I had too. Alternated between the paracetamol and ibuprofen, and DH had to jab me 8am & 8pm .. wasn’t a fan of that! Although the painkillers managed my pain fine. Apart from the trapped wind .. OUCH!

EMCS. Had DS at 9pm on Sunday evening and was discharged just after 10pm on Monday. Would have left sooner if it had been possible, but I already had to push to be discharged when I was, as they wanted me to stay in another night.

Invisablewoman · 27/10/2022 17:54

Crash EMCS : 4 nights. I was quite poorly. The care was unfortunately shocking. The whole experience left me quite traumatised.

EMCS after attempted VBAC: 1 night. I’d learned to be much more vocal so insisted on an EMCS much earlier into labour at the first sign of trouble and before everything went south like it did for DS1. As a result it was a better experience but still not great.

I had emergency c-section at around 5am. I stayed the following night and went home in the afternoon. I couldn’t sleep or feel comfortable on the ward and wanted home. I had read some horror stories here and so thought I’d be left to my own devices that wasn’t case the nurses were attentive but I made the effort to get up and move around as soon as I could. I think though being active made them see I’d be fine going home.

Sevenwondersofthewoo · 27/10/2022 17:58

EMC 4 days 25 years ago and felt crap and said so, still got discharged wasn’t first either and was taken back in with an infection.

Crazycatlady83 · 27/10/2022 18:02

EMCS 7 years ago - went home after 2 nights. Would have preferred going home sooner but the Dr advised against. I felt fine and got on a lot better at home.

Elective CS - 2021 - went home after one night. Was absolutely ready and felt fine at home, actually got some sleep and obviously help from DH.

lemonyfox · 27/10/2022 18:02

Emergency c-section. I went home 24 hours after anaesthetic because that's the earliest they'd let me go. Couldn't wait to leave!! Maternity wards are hell on earth.

What's a crash? car crash?

A crash c section - when it’s very urgent and has to happen almost immediately. More emergent than than a ‘normal’ EMCS.

ClearButtons · 27/10/2022 18:05

EMCS - stayed in two nights (had v early Thursday morning, went home sat Eve). I had to stay due to an infection picked up during labour, plus baby was a bit jaundiced. I'd been in for 4 days prior as well though being induced (failed lol) so I was v ready to leave. I would have left that night regardless - I'd had enough as you're pretty much left to fend for yourself even after major surgery, with barely any visitors (covid times)

ELCS one god awful night. But feeding was going really well. Stayed for three nights after vaginal delivery partly due to complications but then due to feeding issues. I had a side room that time though. I would have been out earlier if I’d been on the ward. I maintain that hell is one giant postnatal ward.

Oh yes I wholeheartedly agree. 9 days on a postnatal ward was the worst thing I've ever had to experience! I'm due our second in June and I'll be out the second I can!

EMCS at 10:44am, home the next day at 6pm Smile midwife was happy to discharge me at about 12pm but we had a long wait for an available paediatrician to come and do DS' checks before we could go.

AWellReadWoman · 27/10/2022 18:14

EMCS, two nights

Lauren83 · 27/10/2022 18:20

24 hours for both mine, one EMC and one ELCS

NextPrimeMinister · 27/10/2022 18:22

EMC - 4 miserable nights as it was Easter weekend and they couldn't find a doctor to discharge me until the Tuesday.

transverseworries · 27/10/2022 18:24

Emcs - 3 nights because my bladder stopped working when they took my catheter out so they had to put it back in and I had to stay a couple of days to make sure everything was working properly

Elcs - 1 night, c section was 2pm and we were ready to leave about 8am the next day but ds had a tongue tie and they couldn't snip it until he was 24 hours old so we had to hang around all day to get that done.

Having my 3rd in a couple of weeks and as partners aren't allowed to stay overnight anymore and I know how understaffed the post natal ward is I will be out of there asap!

Zingy123 · 27/10/2022 18:43

2 EMCS
1 Home after 3 days
2 Home after 7 days due to complications

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 27/10/2022 18:52

Cat 1 emcs (the most urgent) 3 nights, mostly because dc1 was in nicu. I was physically fine.
Cat 2 emcs with dc2, 1 night.

shutthefuckingfuckup · 27/10/2022 22:11

2 nights for elective.

Scaredycat259 · 27/10/2022 22:17

20hrs induction leading to emcs, 5 days stay after due to sepsis risk to both me and baby.
Very well looked after but not so much on the breast feeding side. Had to give formula for first 3 feeds as no one would help me get started.

Ripasso · 27/10/2022 22:18

I had two elective sections and was home the next evening for both. I asked to be discharged both times and the second time asked what I needed to do to get out the next day. The pain was manageable and I healed quickly. I hated being on the ward and could not wait to get home.

MatronicO6 · 27/10/2022 22:29

Emergency C-section baby born at 1am and we got to leave around 5pm the next day but only because I really pushed for it. Was in a lot of discomfort but had zero sleep in post labour ward and was delighted to get out of the place.

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 28/10/2022 16:40

24 hours...they were making arrangements to get me out earlier (emcs midday, talks of discharge 9am following day) but doc said had to wait for the 24hours. That was a month ago.

CornishGem1975 · 28/10/2022 16:42

EMCS - next day. I was out of there like a bat out of hell. Post-natal wards are hellholes.
