Is it really necessary to start a thread....?

AIBU to think these kinds of responses are unkind and unnecessary?

It's a chat forum and IMO is at it's best when it's a bunch of friends musing. Why do people seem to think "chatting" about small things is somehow not what the site is for?

I've found, since DH died, I really miss someone to chat to about minutiae, especially little things that have bothered me. Previously I wouldn't make a point of seeking someone out to talk it over and I wouldn't have started a thread, but I would have got it off my chest when chatting to DH about our days.

Is it really incomprehensible (or unreasonable) that some people on MN just need a bit of a chat? The whole thing is a time hoover, why are people so offended and unkind about "pointless" threads?

SoupDragon · 27/10/2022 08:41

Often it's when the "chat about minutiae" threads are started in AIBU rather than Chat that they get most negative responses.

Bemyclementine · 27/10/2022 08:43

I agree, also the responses that suggest googling. We all know we can Google, sometimes we want a variety of opinions/experiences.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 27/10/2022 08:43

I agree it's unkind. Would the same people cut someone off in the same way for starting it as a RL conversation? Doubtful, so just taking out other life frustrations/disapointment/anger on strangers on the internet.

KimberleyClark · 27/10/2022 08:45

Also the responses that say “who are you, the xyz police” if you’ve expressed an opinion about xyz.

IglesiasPiggl · 27/10/2022 08:46

I always wonder why people bother posting stupid responses like that. I am not interested in lots of the threads on here but appreciate that some people are and scroll past. It also really gets my goat when people post "If this is all you've got to worry about..." type responses, as if we're incapable of thinking about more than one thing at a time.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 27/10/2022 08:47

Cant you just Google the answer?

😀

KangarooKenny · 27/10/2022 08:50

I don’t like it when you express an opinion, then someone quotes you and goes to great lengths to show how wrong you are, posting screen shots to prove the point. Really, do you not have a life outside of MN ?

Yes! Of course it's not all I've got to worry about, I'm probably not even that worried, it's just a fleeting thought. Feel free to ignore it, but why want to knock me down for it?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 27/10/2022 12:15

Yeah, it’s wanky. I always feel obliged to point out that threads are free to start and unlimited.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 12:19

Depends entirely on the topic IMO. There was a really mean thread yesterday about SPAG that certainly didn’t need starting.

I think if you frame the question properly and it’s not a goady topic it’ll be fine. Admit to start with that you just want to chat/realise it’s a first world problem, there are bigger issues then you can preempt some of the negative replies?

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 12:21

I also agree that it’s best to get out of the habit of always looking at or posting in AIBU ‘for traffic’ and using Chat which is often friendlier.

Withnoshoes · 27/10/2022 12:26

I’ve noticed a lot of thread policing recently. Google it
you started a thread about this? ( probably a head tilt too!)
yet another thread about… energy, cost of living, food etc
Not really a problem worth posting though is it OP, much worse happening.

A thread has a title. No one forces you to click on it and read or even comment. It’s open and free for all to post as they wish.

I've never understood the traffic thing anyway . Do people have certain topics they look at and not others? I just look at active.

RoseAndRose · 27/10/2022 12:30

In chat it's fine - that's what the topic is there for.

Not right to shoehorn everything in to AIBU

PoundShopPrincess · 27/10/2022 12:30

Sorry for your loss. 💐
Chat is for chatting. I don't think posters mind if you chat there.
There's lots of reasons why posters might question why someone starts a thread elsewhere especially in AIBU eg if it's goady; if it's rehashing a topic that's been discussed ad nauseum; if they're going to accidentally cause a bunfight and seem too vulnerable for it.

Yes, a lot of people only ever look at AIBU, never venture out into the other topics at all. They are looking for good bunfights presumably. I think Penis Beaker was started in AIBU probably 'for traffic'.
It must be the topic with the highest amount of views so everything gets posted in here-especially urgent life or death health queries.

There's one poster who's absolutely anal about people posting in AIBU rather than what they deem as the 'correct' board.

Exactly!

PoundShopPrincess · 27/10/2022 12:41

Trolls are more likely to go to AIBU so part of the reason posters ask for threads to be moved is to discourage trolls. They don't tend to stay on threads once they're moved to the correct section because there's not as much traffic.

Sparklingbrook · 27/10/2022 12:42

Anyone can post whatever they like wherever they like.
Also people can ‘police’ the threads as much as they like but can’t actually move the threads over or get them removed. So it’s all a bit pointless.

I do like an AIBU to have the question in it but never bother voting much because I don’t see the point.

I’ve never seen a thread get moved from AIBU to another section even if it might be better off there.

PoundShopPrincess · 27/10/2022 12:53

It happens all the time. Threads about women; education; campaigns; the royals; step-parenting etc - all been moved out of AIBU and into their relevant sections.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 27/10/2022 12:54

I usually post in AIBU because when I used to post on the "correct" board I barely got any responses.

It's definitely busier here.

I don't see why it matters really

I often think it’s better to get a decent couple of helpful responses in the ‘right’ topic than loads of unhelpful/dubious ones in AIBU. But that’s just me.

Ah I have most of those topics hidden so that’ll be why.
