to eat a sweet snack every day

One of my friends was shocked to hear that I have a 'sweet snack' every day with my afternoon cup of tea - a couple of biscuits, bit of cake, small chocolate bar etc. According to her, these should be once a week treats and this is an extremely unhealthy habit. I cook and eat relatively healthily and get my five a day, so AIBU to eat something like this every day, as part of a balanced diet.

Tell her to get stuffed and mind her own business.

Ivyonafence · 26/10/2022 14:08

This is Mumsnet so I eat only lettuce.

BigWoollyJumpers · 26/10/2022 14:09

I've just had the nub end of a baguette with lashings of nutella on 😁

Snack? What's a snack ?

Got2besoon · 26/10/2022 14:10

I'd love to know.

I'm from a family where we all eat so much crap all the time.

It wouldn't be unusual for me to have a sweet pastry for breakfast, biscuits with a cup of tea for elevenses, crisps with lunch and chocolate every night.

Eating junk every day is the norm for me and it is a really hard habit to break.

I've always thought most were the same but recently I'm not so sure.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 26/10/2022 14:10

YANBU. I eat sweet snacks several times a day. I also exercise and eat fruit and veg. In isolation a daily snack is not an issue unless you have some compelling health reason to avoid sugar.

Midnights · 26/10/2022 14:12

She sounds like she has an unhealthy relationship with food if she feels the need to make comments on what you're eating!

Tell her actually they only recommend one sweet treat a month and weekly is considered a huge sin. Watch her panic 😂

megletthesecond · 26/10/2022 14:12

Yanbu.
FWIW I had to see am NHS dietician as I have nasty gluten intolerance. Kept a food diary, daily sweet food, and the dietician was absolutely fine with it. They were happy 80/20 healthy to "unhealthy" food ratio.

Greydogs123 · 26/10/2022 14:13

No, it’s not unreasonable. Everything in moderation and if you are otherwise eating a balanced diet with plenty of nutrients then one sweet treat a day is not going to hurt.

lobsterkiller · 26/10/2022 14:21

Laugh at her next time she comments. I have something small and sweet most days, I don't like being too restrictive as that leads to eating more crap.

Also, life if for bloody living. When I take my last breath I won't be thinking that I wished Id eaten more veg.

Mouscadoo · 26/10/2022 14:27

I also like to have something sweet after my main meal almost every day. A piece of chocolate, a biscuit. I remember my partner had gotten me some chocolate yoghurts, I brought one into work one day and the comments and side eyes lol. No regrets!!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 26/10/2022 14:28

Ignore her, I’d say her view on sweet things is unhealthy!

BungleandGeorge · 26/10/2022 14:31

Sounds like your friend has unhealthy issues with food. I don’t care what my friends do or don’t eat and would only comment if asked to. I don’t honk there’s any nutritional problem with one sweet snack a day anyway

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 26/10/2022 14:34

It all depends on the amount you eat. A small sweet snack, as part of a healthy and varied diet daily is absolutely fine. Lots of sweet stuff or huge portions of it amongst an unhealthy and large portion other diet daily - not fine.
Some people are able to eat a small sweet thing and stop there. Some aren't and need to limit themselves because if that.
As long as you are happy and healthy it's fine and your friend should mind her own beeswax.

xogossipgirlxo · 26/10/2022 14:35

I don't find it particularly healthy, and my body demands sugar every day once it gets into habit of getting it, but did you actually ask her for opinion? If not, screw her. Your choice.

Same1977 · 26/10/2022 14:37

It depends...couple of digestives or a 500 kcal biscuit.Which would be a quater of daily calorie allowance

spuddy56 · 26/10/2022 14:38

I think it is recommended (god knows who by) that we should only have one sweet thing a week or something like that. But life is for living and I think so long as you aren't repeatedly gorging on sugary things it's fine

Funkyslippers · 26/10/2022 14:38

I always have something sweet with my afternoon cuppa. If I didn't eat sweet or calorific things I'd lose weight and I mustn't do that. My OH on the other hand rarely ears sweet things but loves crisps, he eats a pack a day

Comedycook · 26/10/2022 14:40

Reminds me of a post I read on here years ago where a poster said she found fruit so sweet she could only manage a piece every few months!

MyneighbourisTotoro · 26/10/2022 14:56

I eat a bit of chocolate everyday, we like to buy a big bar and have a few squares, I don’t see how it’s unhealthy if it’s in moderation.

Snugglemonkey · 26/10/2022 15:07

Unless pregnant or breastfeeding I don't really like sweet things, except some fruits and occasionally yoghurt. I am a savoury fiend and have a snack every day of crisps, nuts or crackers with cheese and chutney. You need a bit of what you like. Who wants to live in a constant state of deprivation?!

WestendVBroadway · 26/10/2022 15:11

Your friend is shocked that you have a sweet snack every day. Blimey, I wish I could stop at one.

Dalekjastninerels · 26/10/2022 15:15

Your "friend" is being nasty OP, she knows the sweet snack is small- but acts as though you are stuffing your face.

A friend wouldn't mention it

Enjoy your 🍰

luxxlisbon · 26/10/2022 15:17

I’m like this too, I usually have some sort of chocolate or sweet about 3pm and then something else about 7/8pm.
I’m a snacked and sugar gives me energy.
I don’t eat a whole share size bar a day so it’s not something I’m going to cut back on.

I'd say that's normal.
