to eat a sweet snack every day

One of my friends was shocked to hear that I have a 'sweet snack' every day with my afternoon cup of tea - a couple of biscuits, bit of cake, small chocolate bar etc. According to her, these should be once a week treats and this is an extremely unhealthy habit. I cook and eat relatively healthily and get my five a day, so AIBU to eat something like this every day, as part of a balanced diet.

I hate a blueberry on Monday so I’m stuffed right now. I might have another on Thursday if I’m hungry.

Kanaloa · 26/10/2022 16:31

Mumsnet really isn’t the place to ask about diet advice because you won’t get any normal or balanced replies.

If you’re healthy and a healthy weight then you’re enjoying these snacks as part of a balanced lifestyle. So why care what your friend thinks? She must be pretty weird anyway because nobody in my social circle would think to tell their friends how many times a week they’re allowed a biscuit.

SheWoreYellow · 26/10/2022 16:35

I did a Master’s project on obesity and used a large data set which included diet info for tens of thousands of people. You’d be amazed at how little the Scottish population eats in terms of fruit and veg and how much in the way of crap. The rest of the UK might be slightly better, I suppose, but probably not by much. Mumsnet is not going to be representative.

ChunkyThighs24 · 26/10/2022 16:40

I had a slice of chocolate cake for breakfast this morning. This was not a rare occurrence.

In all honesty I'd love to have the Will power to have one sweet snack a day!!

Squeezita · 26/10/2022 16:45

It depends on your general diet.

When I'm low carbing, a sweet snack is not even a weekly treat, it's totally verboten.

But when I'm not LCing then a sweet snack at 4pm is de rigueur.

Doublevision5 · 26/10/2022 16:46

Absolutely fine in my opinion. I often do too. Perhaps not every day, but that's not a conscious decision. If I want to have something, then I do. If there's cakes or something on offer in the staff room at work, I'll have one. Sometimes I have a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea. Sometimes me and DP have a nice dessert after dinner, or some chocolate.

In my opinion if your meals are (generally) healthy then it's ok to have unhealthy stuff too!

SealSquish · 26/10/2022 16:47

I eat chocolate / biscuits every single day. I’ve also lost 4 stone this year.

I count calories and as long as I’m within my limit it’s fine. It’s all about balance isn’t it.

thelobsterquadrille · 26/10/2022 16:21

Or it's a daily treat.

Treats don't have to be something rare.

I hate the word, treats are what I feed my cat. Anyway, to me it means occasional.

BustyDisplay · 26/10/2022 16:49

I’m a chocoholic and eat it almost every day. Plus I have a thing for Mr. Kipling Bakewell slices and eat one with a coffee break. I’m not obese, in fact very slim and willowy.

I had leftover apple crumble and custard Grin 'twas delicious!

BustyDisplay · 26/10/2022 16:51

Apart from my bust, obviously 🤣

Fink · 26/10/2022 17:01

It's not really any of your friend's business, is it? If you're a healthy weight and your cholesterol is ok and so on then you probably have a balanced diet. If you have health issues then you may need to look at your diet. But unless she's seriously concerned for your health then it's not your friend's place to pass judgement on your afternoon tea habits.

I don't have a sweet snack every day, but when I do have one I go mad and binge on them. That's why I make myself not have them too often. Your way is healthier!

Afterfire · 26/10/2022 17:02

I eat a family sized bar of milkybar every single day. Have done for the last ten years at least. I’m 42. I know it’s not great for me but it’s the only vice I have - don’t drink, smoke, eat healthily otherwise. Life is short and I enjoy it. I’m slightly overweight but not hugely. It’s the one thing I really enjoy.

CarefreeMe · 26/10/2022 17:03

YANBU

This is how I lost weight.

Previously, I would deny myself sweet stuff and then end up bingeing on loads of crap.

Then I started having a sweet treat after dinner and was able to stick to my diet so much better.
Because I allowed myself treats it didn’t feel like I was on a diet and I didn’t crave junk.

Oblomov22 · 26/10/2022 17:04

I do too.

I didn't know you could be both busty and willowy?

Willowy means long, lean, and flexible as the branch of a willow tree blowing in the breeze, I'm not sure us busty people can be that Grin

musicviking1 · 26/10/2022 17:09

I eat a sweet treat most days and it makes me feel happy - I also drink coffee at 10pm every night, have done for years and have no trouble sleeping.

Reminds me of a post I read on here years ago where a poster said she found fruit so sweet she could only manage a piece every few months!

I remember a poster saying peas and sweetcorn were very unhealthy because of sugar content!

SimonJones · 26/10/2022 17:14

If you never ate anything other than biscuits, it would still be none of her business.

Kimya · 26/10/2022 17:18

It sounds perfectly normal to me. You're not smashing a 1kg Dairy Milk every day, you're having a small sweet snack with a cup of tea.

whoruntheworldgirls · 26/10/2022 17:19

I have sweets almost every day 🤷🏼‍♀️

Spanielsarepainless · 26/10/2022 17:19

I'm the same. Biscuits, slice of cake, sometimes toast. I had a pudding after lunch (proper pudding, not fruit or yoghurt) every single day until my mid-20s when I married and didn't have time. I'm nearly 60 and am on no medication and not overweight.

generalh · 26/10/2022 17:31

I have a Curly Wurly every night. Tell her to mind her own business.

warofthemonstertrucks · 26/10/2022 18:09

As long as you're in calorie deficit if trying to lose weight or not vastly over if trying not to gain it and just maintain, you can eat what you want. It doesn't matter where the calories come from does it? Or that's what I'm seeing more and more of from fitness instagrammers. Obvs it's better to have something nutritious but if you aren't trying to lose weight and are having healthy stuff too it's fine.

(And if you don't give a fig if you put on weight have at it if that's what you enjoy-it's none of your mates business)

PuntasticUsername · 26/10/2022 18:12

Yabu. I lick a small square of dark chocolate every other decade and find it more than enough.
