To wonder what’s deemed middle income, low income, high income?

Callmesadie · 25/10/2022 20:06

I’ve read a few posts where people are talking about people on middle income struggling to pay the bills.

Can anyone advise what’s deemed middle income please?

I am sure someone will come along with a figure but i think it does also depend on where you live.

Dacadactyl · 25/10/2022 20:17

It definitely depends where you live. In parts of the North you can buy a terrace for 100k. In the south east thatd be impossible.

Is quite useful

In terms of where people live - I have seen it's less significant than people think

Mostly due to More well paying jobs in areas with higher housing costs

Outside London... Low income under £25k a year, middle £23-45k, high income £45+?

I'm only guessing though. In fairness I think low income probably means under £21k

midgetastic · 25/10/2022 20:21

Rightnove

40 mile radius of Brighton ( so south)
11 terraced houses for advertised price 110k

Up north 13 properties ( not houses, flats ) within similar radius or Whitley bay ( posh seaside up north )

AloysiusBear · 25/10/2022 20:23

London/south east: I'd say low income for a family with children is under 60k combined, pre tax. Middle maybe 60 - 120k, 120k upwards High.

Yes that sounds right for where we live in the south, though I'd maybe push the hight to £150k +

DenholmElliot1 · 25/10/2022 20:25

I'd say low income under £30k
High income 6 figures

So by that i guess middle income is between £30-£99k

I think 30-35k household income would be considered low income, certainly going by the benefits you’d be entitled to.

Theres a huge difference between £30k and £99k!

littlepeas · 25/10/2022 20:27

Going by tax rates I’d say £150k plus is edging into high, under £40k is on the low side and £40k-£150k is middle.

I agree with this. In the areas of the north where there are jobs and good prospects, housing is not cheap. It's less expensive than London, but it's not cheap.

AloysiusBear · 25/10/2022 20:32

Dogsgottabone yeah, could go to 150k these days with housing/energy food costs what they are. We know loads with household income over 120k so tbf its not that high.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 25/10/2022 20:34

I think low is below £20,000

Medium is between £20,000and £50,000

High is £50,000 to £100,000

Very high is over £100,00

This is per person rather than household.

Oh come on. It's less than the top one percentile. It's very high indeed.

Theres no way the "middle" goes up to £150k. Not even close.

low >30k
mid 31-49k
high 50k+ (Higher tax bracket)
top 10% 100k+

all Individual income figures. That is why many single parent households are low income. Even with 2 lower earners two wages are better than one. It’s also why rules around tax are silly, as they are based on if only one person is a high earner, both are taxed at 40% and all benefits are lost. Income tax should be based on households and more consideration given to the cost of childcare / carers.

Mushroo · 25/10/2022 20:45

Household income is becoming meaningless due to the disparity in property prices.

A family with an income of £60k who bought ages ago who have a mortgage of £700pcm will feel a lot wealthier than a family in London on over £100k spending £2.5kpcm on rent / mortgage.

MichaelFabricantsWig · 25/10/2022 20:48

Only 5% of the population earn over 80k - that's the high bar imo.

littlepeas · 25/10/2022 20:50

Octomore · 25/10/2022 20:40

I see that and think that, in that case, the majority of people are low earners.

Someone further up the thread said that there’s a big difference between £30k and £99k, but there is an even bigger difference between £150k and £1million (and more). High earning only really starts at £150k.

user1471453601 · 25/10/2022 20:58

In my view, the whole idea that you can tell who is suffering with rising prices by simply looking at income, is erroneous.

for example, I'm retired and have an income of about 26K, around the median wage. But, I have no mortgage, we own our house, the only bills we have are utilities. We are lucky.

so looking at income, without also looking at outgoings, is erroneous. They both have to be taken into account.
I have young extended family members where they both work and get free child care, via family members. They all have good jobs, but they also have mortgages which have risen exponentially because Truss decided to "experiment" with people's lives.

we also have a family friend who rents. He's a good tenant, pays his rent on time, looks after the property. He and his family will be made homeless after xmas, because his landlord can no longer afford to pay the mortgage on their home, since Truss , so landlord has to sell or the home will be repossessed.

we need, the country needs, a General Election now

GoneForFood · 25/10/2022 20:58

Low income - qualifies for state help.

middle income - just over the threshold for state help (but lower ‘squeezed’ middle still need it)

high income - doesn’t need state help

Sorry, but if you're anywhere near the top 1%, you can't claim to be in the middle.

It's all about the bell curve. In this graph from IFS, the majority of the bell curve falls between (roughly) £250 and £750 per week disposable income after council tax, which equates to £13k - £39k per year.

Middle income- what you earn.
High income- what richer people earn
Low income- what poorer people earn.

I've heard people say they are middle income earning 25k or 150k.
