To ask what’s the funniest hissy fit you’ve seen from an adult?

I’m currently watching my estranged cousin make an utter twat of himself on social media (he has no privacy settings) throwing a massive hissy fit that our mutual cousin has “utterly and utterly” offended him by inviting me to the day part of her wedding, but no other cousins.

He has flown off at the deep end cursing her, but conveniently not mentioning that her fiancée (who he has never met) has been one of my DH’s closest friends for 30 plus years.

He only knows because he bumped into the stag party at the weekend and realised my DH is part of the wedding party,

I just want to get popcorn while I watch other relatives (frequent flying monkeys in tbt past) pandering to him and my elder brother and their pity party.

[Cousin who is getting married doesn’t give a fuck about his whinging. Ironically it’s made us chat for the first time in a long time so totally backfired on him]

My DGM was annoyed that we couldn’t visit her a particular week because we would be seeing my MIL overseas. She stated loudly, for all to hear: “for someone who’s been playing up her chronic illness for so many years, [MIL] is taking an awfully long time to go ahead and die.”

Although there’s no love lost between my MIL and me, that outburst from my DGM seemed pretty beyond the pale.

To her credit, she called me back later to apologize.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 25/10/2022 17:37

Sorry - context to make her hissy fit so awful it was funny - WE WERE IN A CEMETERY when she said it. Mortifying.

The stories about parents being affronted by no christening reminds me of my mother's behaviour before my first wedding. My XH's best friend was a concert violinist and agreed to play a violin solo as I walked into the church. My mother said that she hated violin music and so could not come to the wedding. When I started to object she had a meltdown, in front of my in-laws-to be, topped by a story about how she had once walked out of a Yehudi Menuhin concert after five minutes because she could not stand violins (nope it didn't make any sense at the time either, and was also 100% untrue, being simply an excuse to try and look socially superior to the in-laws, who came from a very different background and would not have been expected, by her at any rate, to frequent classical music concerts). It was so transparent and childish.

legophoenix · 25/10/2022 17:40

It was the first few time I heard it too.
😉

DH when we lived overseas. In petrol stations customers didn’t fill the tanks, they had staff and due to suspicion of working classes they had to show that the pump was on zero before removing the hose.

DH went to the loo, attended asked me to check the pump, I confirmed it was on zero. Tank was running in fumes so it took 65 litres. DH comes back and starts excitedly saying “he’s cheating” because the tank only holds 60 litres.

Manager comes over, attendant explains, manager asks me and I say - yes, it was on zero. DH’s eyes neatly popped out of head. Toddler DC asked me “what’s Daddy doing?” I said he’s having a tantrum.

DH got the handbook out and showed the manager that the tank only holds - oops- 65 litres. He apologised and paid.

He’s not usually behaving like that.

Yeah, I have also heard that airline story countless times, including on MN...

Yeah, I have also heard that airline story countless times, including on MN...

Yes. And the " everyone clapped" bit too

CallieApricot · 25/10/2022 17:48

My mum's a spoilt princess used to being waited on hand and foot by my dad, despite being fit as a fiddle. When he used to go to cricket once a year, she used to throw a tantrum and used to phone my Aunt to complain about him leaving her on her own for one day. My Aunt is a widow and said "I've been on my own for 20 years!"

Smilelesstalkmore · 25/10/2022 17:51

I love that the aeroplane story even has the 'and everyone applauded me' at the end Grin

Not beyond the realms of possibility though.

I am visually impaired and I once got on a train which was busy. I did actually a find a seat, but what I didn’t know was that it was reserved.Anyway at the next stop a woman arrived at the seat with the conductor and said “there. That’s the woman who’s sitting in my seat!”The conductor said to me “excuse me this seat is reserved,” so I got up straight away. He then said to the woman “there is your reserved seat, I will take this lady into first class.

Had the woman told me the seat was reserved i would just have got up anyway.

But I’ve known several people with disabilities who have been put into first class if e.g. trains are full etc.

SIL with BIL's female friend. I've never seen anything like it. SIL was actually green with jealousy

She couldn't speak

Birdsofafeatherflocktogether · 25/10/2022 17:56

I once wandered into our local charity shop and a woman followed me in

i was looking through their cross stitch kits when I heard the woman having a real shit fit-she’d seen a vintage typewriter in a cabinet for £50 and wanted it

she just didn’t want to pay for it

full on toddler tantrum (on the floor and everything)

the staff offered her 10% off it but that wasn’t good enough for her-they had to ring the police when she tried to smash the glass to get at it

loads of screaming about how they got it for free and that meant she shouldn’t have to pay for it either

my mother when my brother and sister in law got married

they are cf’s-it was amusing to watch them battle their way to who was paying for what-they wanted a big day that made the royal wedding look like a do in a scout hut-they just didn’t want to pay for it

anyway,my parents met her parents and my (narcissistic) mother decided that she was much better than them because my (enabler) father and herself had bought their house before they had (I know-makes sense)

they finally made it to the big day,my mother is dressed up (for her) and the brides mother rocks up wearing a nicer outfit and make up-my mother has never worn make up in her life, which is fine-her choice

cue my mother having the hissy fit from hell as mother of the bride looked nicer than she did everyone just looked at her,but we are used to it so we all refused to pander to her

she stomped out and missed the ceremony-somehow this is all my fault for not telling her she looked nicer and that ‘the mother of the groom is always overlooked’

i don’t get on with my brother (I’m nc with the lot of them now) but even I felt for them-what a start to married life

Confrontayshunme · 25/10/2022 17:57

I told my 6'8" DH that Ryan Air would in NO WAY allow the size bag he had without paying £50. He insisted I was wrong and that he desperately needed 3 pairs of his huge shoes for a 7 day holiday. Gate agent asked him to put his bag in the size checker. He pushed until it got stuck then turned the holder over trying to get it out and broke the wheels off it trying to prove it was small enough then shouted at the poor woman that he deserved more baggage allowance because his clothes were bigger than average.

Her response: "Everyone gets the same allowance, even babies."

😂he totally deserved it.

Me….

trying to teach myself to crochet for the umpteenth time. Stood in front of a YouTube video, completely failing, eventually had a meltdown that culminated in me throwing the crochet hook across the room. I was a total dick!

hopeishere · 25/10/2022 18:01

My brother in law screaming at me and DH because we wouldn't let him bring some random woman we'd never met to our tiny wedding (that we were having because my mum was really sick).

He told me FiL thought I was being unreasonable and then went mental when I told him my sister thought he was being unreasonable - how dare I discuss the issue with anyone.

He wanted to write to my mum to explain "what had happened" ie he's asked her before asking us.

AuntMargo · 25/10/2022 18:04

My adult daughter cried when she offered me her a warm sausage roll form the butchers, I eat it all ! I was only supposed to have a bite, its was hilarious.

A very busy city-centre branch of a large public library network.
An adult woman spotted the latest book by an extremely popular author, on the reserved books shelf, awaiting collection by someone who had submitted a request card to reserve it.
She asked if she could have it and when told no, the person who'd reserved it could arrive at any time to pick it up, she did loud ugly crying and flung herself about like a tantrum-throwing toddler.
Someone senior was called down to the desk and she told her that 'everyone' knew she was the author's greatest fan and that 'all' the library staff also knew this, and that she 'deserved' to read the new book first.
She was then escorted from the building after having a further frothing rage when it was suggested she complete a request form herself and join the waiting list.

And people think working in a library is a nice, quiet job.

I used to work in a busy library branch too. Quiet job my arse. There were plenty of rude and unreasonable people. The ones who would spend 20 minutes shouting to try to get out of paying a 15p fine were my favourites. No, I can't make you pay, but also, no, I can't issue you with any more books until you pay, there's an automatic block on your card and we have to reconcile the amount in the till with the amount we've recorded as taking on the computer, and I'm buggered if I'm paying your 15p fine out of my own pocket.

Birdsofafeatherflocktogether · 25/10/2022 18:04

My dp has just reminded me of his

wed been to the cinema and we came out-both really needing a smoke (weve both quit now)

anyway,we get out and he goes to roll up-and for some reason he couldn’t do it-the rizla just wouldn’t roll

he threw it to the ground, started jumping up and down on his unrolled fag while screaming and shouting

he threw it to the ground and stomped off

i calmly rolled us both one and went to find him-he was stood like a toddler who’d eaten the chocolate and was waiting for his bollocking

we can laugh about it now but he really thought I was going to finish him over it

I had to tell a senior manager that no, he couldn’t have his brochure ahead of the date he’d agreed and signed off. “But I only want a few”. Yes, but they’re all printed at once so it’s like wanting a slice of cake before it’s baked. He literally stamped his foot. Somehow I managed not to laugh until he’d left the office.

That's a brilliant simile!

A woman on a plane demanded that I give up my aisle seat as her husband was tall and needed the extra leg-room. Had she been polite about it I would have but I was not going to be bullied into it by her or anyone else. She refused to sit down and was shouting. The crew threatened to remove her and her husband ( who was not the least bit embarrassed about her behaviour, instead he seemed to be enjoying it), from the plane unless she calmed down. She then started ranting about how she was a lawyer and she would sue them and the airline if anyone "dare lay a finger on me". It was then that the senior crew member came up and said very calmly, "there is space in 1st class would you like an upgrade?" Cue lots of "well finally somebody with a brain, of course we'd like an upgrade"...to which the crew member replied " no madam I was actually asking her (me), that way your husband can have his aisle seat and this passenger can have a peaceful flight". I've never seen anyone look so sheepish as her and her husband, before or since. Oh, and the other passengers in economy applauded as I walked up to the 1st class section.

Didn’t happen of the year awards

thinkponk48 · 25/10/2022 18:10

But it must have done. "They all applauded"

Ok then, if you say so. 🙄

Myself when I was 17 and doing my A-Level Art. Had a row with my younger sister and because my mum stuck up for her I ripped my own art project in a rage. What a grade A dick I was. I had to completely start from scratch and it was never as good as my first attempt.
I cringe like mad when my mum reminds me of it. Thankfully I've mellowed a lot since that fateful day Confused

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 25/10/2022 18:24

I worked in retail for three years, so have a few stories of unreasonable behaviour, the one that was most tantrum like though was the adult customer who I wouldn't let use the children's wear changing room. Before I could even point out the nearest women's wear changing room, which was less than 30 seconds away she launched into a ten minute verbal attack, including that anyone should be allowed to use any changing room and finishing off by complaining about my attitude and saying that she "won't be spoken to like that by someone like you". I couldn't get a word in edgeways and everytime I tried I got "I don't want to hear anything you have to say" shouted at me.

To be fair my attitude probably wasn't the best after she started telling. She had her teenage daughter with her as well, who looked completely mortified.
