To ask her to turn her phone off loudspeaker?

I'm sat in Costa having a treat of a cup of tea. It's my relaxing time before work, but there's a lady on her phone. Now I don't begrudge anyone a phone conversation, but her phone is on loudspeaker and the person she is talking to is very loud! It's quite but a dampener on my treat. WIBU to ask her to turn it off loudspeaker?

I really hate people who do this and also those who listen to music/watch videos on their phone without headphones on trains and cafes.

I really don't understand how so many people do not seem to grasp that this is rude and disrespectful to others.

I usually say something. The most recent was a middle aged man who started watching loud videos on long train journey in a ''quiet'' carriage. I just pointed the ''quiet sign'' to him and asked him to turn it down which thankfully he did.

I also had a couple of instance where someone replied things like ''it is my phone and my right'' ''why should I?'' and the usual nonsense, but I really don't care.

People that do this always seem to have the sound at top volume. Arrrg!

As if its remotely interesting!

@MillennialFalconer I have exactly the same issue and, like you, I use headphones for every call. It’s so annoying but I wouldn’t dream of doing loudspeaker in public!
Separately, I was on a train yesterday with my 6 year old DS and two different early 20’s women were on their phones on loudspeaker. One was effing and jeffing all over the place and the other was talking in a different language so no idea what was being said. I didn’t say anything as didn’t want any retribution and it was only a 15 minute journey but didn’t like my DS exposed to the foul language as he has asd and echolalia so repeats a lot back. Thankfully he loves trains so I distracted him with looking out the window!

My dad is deaf and does this (not out though) and I tell him not to do it at my house. I’d tell the woman to stop and have done so before in our local curry house. The owner thanked me. The Roman seemed oblivious to the fact it was rude and intrusive.

Those bloody Romans, so rude!

Of course you can, noise pollution is a huge problem, and headphones exist so should be used.

That aside, my phone's normal setting is quite loud, I am not sure that some phones are actually on loudspeaker as you can hear mine quite clearly when it's not. It just gets a bit louder on loudspeaker. But I wouldn't try and have a phone conversation in any public place other than "train late can you please pick me up at x time" - and even then I'd probably send a message.

If you're partially deaf, headphones don't work. I know, being partially deaf myself.

Depends on the level at which you experience deafness. Every deaf or partially deaf person is unique. I am partially deaf and up until the day that I got fabulous bluetooth hearing aids I used ear buds all the time, as I could not hear when the phone was either on speaker or up to my ear.

Just saying, so those with hearing loss don't dismiss the use of in ear buds either wired or bluetooth. I found them absolutely fantastic.

Much sympathy. It's rude and obnoxious and a bit thick.

Didn’t see that… how on earth does “woman” become Roman. I did manage to change the predictive text that changed DEAF to DEAD. 🤣

I'd be livid if a friend put me on loudspeaker in a public place without telling me as I dont want what I'm hearing to be shared with others.
