Mending pile... do you mend?

Apparently I am odd for mending things - currently sat sewing up DP's jeans he has managed to rip in mysterious circumstances... all I got was 'I dunno'... they just exploded off him. Mentioned it to a friend on the phone and she thinks its odd, no one does that these days!

Anyway, do you mend stuff, am I odd for mending things, having a pile of mending to work through, saving bits of fabric for mending things?

(Before anyone leaps in, he can mend things, I offered because he was busy doing stuff I can't do.)

Also take things to cobblers as standard.

I once took two pairs of boots to the cobblers. They lost one pair for six weeks and told me the other pair were unrepairable.

I wasn’t impressed by that cobbler, I'm sure there are great ones.

I like darning, I would sew a button back on or re-sew a seam or hem that had come down. Not sure I’d sew up an actual rip, but maybe that’s because I am not great at sewing (so it would show) and don’t really rip my clothes?

When jeans etc start to split just above the knee from kneeling down gardening I do tend to sew that up to stop it going further so I can still wear them in the garden. Some of my gardening jeans then get relegated to shorts when there are more repairs than the original.

Actually got an invisible mend, woohoo! He'd somehow torn from the bottom of the fly zip to about six inches down the inside leg... impressive and v little to stitch to - probably not suited to a visible decorative mend!

Told him absolutely NO action stunt ninja behaviour in those jeans now!

I do make mini stuffed toys when I am so inclined so hand sewing is not a big deal - I wouldn't say I am super duper neat but I can make it tidy, invisible where necessary etc.

There are things I wouldn't bother mending, but if I can do it in 10 minutes without too much faff and the item looks ok afterwards, why wouldn't I.

I am relieved to see so many menders!

Next question though - I am 42, I was taught to mend by Mother and Grandma (ok taught by mother, shouted at and given up on my grandma, she was not a patient woman and my stitches were visible thus FAR too large.. ).

Are younger generations being taught to mend, taught how to mend? If not, is that a bad thing, is so much clothing so cheap and naf theres no point?

I’m 35, taught by my mum, she was taught by her mum and dad (tailor). My DD and DS are small but already learning by osmosis I think!! DD likes to help me sew.

Wifflywafflywoo · 24/10/2022 21:51

Yes I love sitting working through my pile. Usually loose/missing buttons, curtains to take up, dog's soft toys to perform surgery on and I sew little loops of old shoelaces onto my microfiber cloths so I can hang them on hooks.

I stitched a beautiful garland of stuffed felt jungle animals whilst in hospital waiting for my c-section, modified and adapted a big fluffy pram muff to fit my pram and I make Christmas pompom decorations if I get the time 😊

ChaToilLeam · 24/10/2022 21:54

Yes, I do a lot of sewing and I’m always mending or altering things. Got a bag of fabric scraps and a button box, and I salvage buttons, zips and elastic from clothes that are worn out. Can mend costume jewellery too, made a bit of money during lockdown fixing things for neighbours.

I hate throwing away anything fixable and have a lot of vintage clothes that I’ve repaired. Recently got to work on a beautiful 60s coat. Sleeves were frayed but needed some shortening anyway, some seams needed fixed as did lining, and it needed new pockets. As good as new!

We have an excellent and very cheerful cobbler nearby too and I’m a regular customer.

Welshwabbit · 24/10/2022 21:54

Yes, I do. I'm not very good at it but I patch knees with Pokemon patches (very popular with my kids) and sew up small holes in joggers/school trousers/jumpers etc. I sew on cub/scout badges and replace buttons. My mum (who is properly good at sewing and made my clothes when I was little) tried to teach me but I didn't pay much attention. I wish I had because I enjoy doing the mending now and would like to be better at it!

SugarNspices · 24/10/2022 21:56

Yes I mend, socks probably not, only ones I mend are the merino wool ones because they are so warm and were expensive. I sew seams and buttons small tears in knit wear if I can get away with it looking good again.

Welshwabbit · 24/10/2022 21:56

I also patch the inner thigh areas of jeans and my husband's trousers - I'm very messy but those parts aren't visible and I hate throwing even cheap clothes away if they can be repaired.

Laiste · 24/10/2022 21:57

Yeah i mend.
I can invisible mend 😇

I mend toys that have ripped seams.

I mend youngest DDs school tights A LOT.

I'll mend jeans which go at the crotch (once), then bin.

I mend DHs ripped work trouser pockets (builder).

I've mended a windbreak and re elasticated a garden chair this summer.

I will replace a button.

Learned from DM.
Have i passed it on? Well the DCs have witnessed it all so ...

thephoticsneezer · 24/10/2022 21:58

I replace zips and buttons or sew up split seams but couldn't be bothered with much more than that unless it was something I really loved.

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/10/2022 22:04

Always. I’ve been sewing since I was 10 and find hand mending quite therapeutic if I’m in the mood.
I buy decent quality shoes and boots (awkward shaped feet🙄) so they’re always worth having soled and heeled.
I almost miss sewing name tags into school uniforms!

Branster · 24/10/2022 22:10

I have an alterations pile and I mend wool tights because they are expensive and often get holes at the toes.
I don't think I mend much else apart from sewing the odd button or stitching a whole in a pocket - these don't go in the pile, I do them as soon ad needed.

My alterations pile grows and grows and once a year a go through it. Love it! Some are complex for my abilities and I do it by hand. It's my own project and I get lost in it when I find the time.

DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2022 22:10

Yes, I mend, always have done. I find sewing really relaxing. My grandmother taught me how to do it and it's a real skill.

YellowTreeHouse · 24/10/2022 22:12

No, I don’t mend things. What a waste of time and who really wants mended things anyway when you can just buy brand new?

If it breaks/gets a hole/develops a rip/has a chip… just chuck it and get a new one.

Phrenologistsfinger · 24/10/2022 22:12

Yup, me! i have quite a good sized pile at the moment, save it all for winter sofa time!

AliTheMinx · 24/10/2022 22:13

God, no. I can't even thread a needle - ha ha!

PeloFondo · 24/10/2022 22:14

No - my mum couldn't sew so she never taught me
I can do enough to stitch up my cats fave toy but that's about it! I can knit a little bit

NorthernSoul55 · 24/10/2022 22:21

vipersnest1 · 24/10/2022 21:01

@WiddlinDiddlin, thank you!
DD is quite curvy and has a tiny waist (takes after me when I was younger - those were the days!) so often has to buy things which fit on the hips but are loose in the waist.
She's moved out now, so I probably won't be asked to do it again, but at least I know I can now. Smile

I have tonight mended two holey sweaters belonging to DD1. She moved out 10 years ago!

Rowthe · 24/10/2022 22:24

Yes.

I sometimes see patches onto knees.
Buttons.

Also any badges onto uniforms- brownies.

I also fix any sort toys that may small rips.

Rowthe · 24/10/2022 22:24

Soft toy

vipersnest1 · 24/10/2022 22:28

@NorthernSoul55, in this case they would have to come from the other end of the country! (And in that case I wouldn't be able to unpick and pin to get the best fit.) There's no emoji for an empty nest it there? 👀

FOJN · 24/10/2022 22:31

I don't have a mending pile as such, I enjoy sewing so much I mend when needed.

I own a darning mushroom too and love darning socks.

Visible mending is having a moment if you want to Google it for inspiration.

It's great to have mending skills to prolong the life of clothes. Mending may not be fashionable but it doesn't seem odd to me, being wasteful is far weirder.

FlirtyMelons · 24/10/2022 22:33

My mending pile goes in the ironing pile which is sent round to my mums. She sends it all back and puts notes on the hangers saying things like 'I have had the tear on my sleeve sewn up' 🙈

I am totally useless when it comes to mending clothes, I can't even sew a button on neatly, it's embarrassing really.

RampantIvy · 24/10/2022 22:34

How are people so careless with clothes that they end up with a pile of mending?

I med clothes that can be mended, otherwise they get used as rags. I don't have a lot of mending because I don't tear my clothes in the first place. And I have stuff that is years old.

EmpressoftheMundane · 24/10/2022 22:37

A button, a tear along a seam, a dropped hem, the odd patch- yes.

I don’t darn and I won’t touch zippers. Zippers are very difficult to replace once a garment is finished.
