Mending pile... do you mend?

Apparently I am odd for mending things - currently sat sewing up DP's jeans he has managed to rip in mysterious circumstances... all I got was 'I dunno'... they just exploded off him. Mentioned it to a friend on the phone and she thinks its odd, no one does that these days!

Anyway, do you mend stuff, am I odd for mending things, having a pile of mending to work through, saving bits of fabric for mending things?

(Before anyone leaps in, he can mend things, I offered because he was busy doing stuff I can't do.)

yes I do, but do a lot of hand sewing generally anyway so it’s nothing unusual for me

Precipice · 24/10/2022 20:06

I don't have a pile, but I do mend some things. In the case of a jeans rip, I don't know if I would, if it wasn't small and was going to be visible. The things I mend tend to have only small holes where then the little fix isn't so visible.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 24/10/2022 20:06

I had a mending pile when my dog was a puppy and his sharp teeth would catch on everything.
I've got a bag of iron on patch mending squares that has about 25 different colours so I can patch more than I sew

Sparklingbrook · 24/10/2022 20:07

No. I’m no good at sewing it would look a mess. My Mum used to darn socks she had this wooden mushroom thing but I wouldn’t do that either.
I’d sew in a loose button but that’s about it.

MintJulia · 24/10/2022 20:08

It depends. If I can make things 'as new' then yes.

I replace lost buttons and broken zips. I restitch hems that have come down.

But I don't repair things that have holes in. I can't see the point.

Seashor · 24/10/2022 20:09

I love mending, please send me some of your pile, mine’s empty.

BlueWalnut · 24/10/2022 20:09

Yes I do. I buy few clothes but decent ones and wear them until they are practically threads so mending is required!

PrincessesRUs · 24/10/2022 20:09

My mending pile is always endless! I mend lots by hand but always later than I should so it's bigger jobs than it should be if I did it right away!

PrincessesRUs · 24/10/2022 20:10

I include sewing names labels in my mending pile!

Changechangychange · 24/10/2022 20:10

I like darning, I would sew a button back on or re-sew a seam or hem that had come down. Not sure I’d sew up an actual rip, but maybe that’s because I am not great at sewing (so it would show) and don’t really rip my clothes?

Ponderingwindow · 24/10/2022 20:11

Some articles aren’t high enough quality to warrant mending these days, but I try to buy clothes with mending. Jeans are almost always worthwhile unless they are ancient. Though I find those are the pairs my family most requests mended because they are the most beloved.

yes, I do all the family mending. DH can technically manage a bit, but he isn’t great at it. He takes on other tasks in exchange which is an arrangement that makes both of us happier.

Ponderingwindow · 24/10/2022 20:11

clothes worth mending, not clothes with mending.

AffIt · 24/10/2022 20:12

I don't mend things myself because I have at least three left thumbs, but I do have a very good local seamstress that I send things to. I also take my shoes and bags to the cobbler.

I like keeping my things - I'm a bit sad that I'm rubbish at doing it myself, but I prefer to get things mended if possible.

PrincessesRUs · 24/10/2022 20:10

I include sewing names labels in my mending pile!

God that is the bane of my life (I was SO glad when DS left nursery and I only had to sew labels in 4 school shirts and trousers). I have an ink stamp but it always fades really quickly.

lannistunut · 24/10/2022 20:13

Yes I mend, it is wasteful not to plus it is a shame to have to give up loved items for a small bit of damage.

I like visible mending and decorative mending, I have a bag that I bought about 20 years ago, the mending makes me happy.

AffIt · 24/10/2022 20:13

(I can just about sew on a button or stick a hem down with Wondaweb, though.)

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2022 20:13

I mend things. I don't bother if it's cheap knickers or socks, but I'll do things like patch jeans, replace buttons, or hemming.
I don't replace zips, because I'm no good at it, but I'll try a repair if it looks possible.

PurplePixies · 24/10/2022 20:16

Yes, I write like mending things too. Although I find putting new zips into things quite tricky.
I read about the Japanese method of Boro stitching a while ago and now try to make any patches look pretty and a design feature.

Pootles34 · 24/10/2022 20:16

I love the new trend for visible mending. Im not as good as a lot i see on Instagram, but I have a go! My beloved old levis had six patches before they gave up the ghost.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 24/10/2022 20:16

I am really cackhanded with sewing, but will mend things like little "wear holes" in a jersey dress or patch the knees of children's trousers. Would also sew a button.

Also take things to cobblers as standard.

Tbh though, the children pretty much outgrow their clothes and DH and I wear stuff till it's not fit for work anymore.

akabluebell · 24/10/2022 20:17

I sew on buttons, take up hems, repair seams, and rips. Just out of interest did you know Toast offer free mending of all their clothes irrespective of age? What a great service. Meantime I'll just keep mending 😀

vipersnest1 · 24/10/2022 20:18

I've darned woolen tights and socks.
I repaired a pulled seam on a dress that I liked (boho style and thin fabric - but double-layered).
If it's something I like, and think I can mend, I try - it's going to go in the bin anyway, so I haven't lost anything by trying.
A more recent sewing triumph was taking in a waistband and related darts on a skirt for DD, although that's not mending, but I'm just mentioning it because I was so proud of myself! It was a heavy stretchy fabric with a visible zip at the back, so a bit of a challenge for me! Smile

rosegoldwatcher · 24/10/2022 20:20

I don't like mending but, as I am a sewer, family tend to give me their mending to do and I do it (eventually!) Currently waiting in my pile is a large white toy cat, a corduroy skirt and a raincoat all belonging to my GDs.

My friend recently bought an unworn Karen Millen dress from a charity shop. She brought it to me as it had a few inches of unstitched seam below the back zip. The dress was fully lined, so the mending process was more complex than she assumed it would be, but it looked fab when done.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 24/10/2022 20:22

I have a mending pile, but it never ending!! I have thick thighs and wear through jeans fast, so I patch them and they last 4 times as long.

I sew as well so also have a huge pile of fabric waiting on being made into clothes but also a middle pile. Things that I want to make into other things. So like a t-shirt that my husband was given that is amazing, but he doesn't like the sleeves so I'm going to change them so he'll wear it.

I've got stickins, self adhesive name tags, they are great, and so much faster than sewing labels in!

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2022 20:24

@akabluebell , I didn't know that, but I don't think I have anything from Toast that needs mending.
I buy most of my clothes second hand and something that needs mending is usually cheap. If something has nice buttons but it's going to be ragged, I'll save the buttons and reuse them.
