Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

@MarshaBradyo - I'm sure he will get plenty of cheers! Their seats depend on him being successful.

Rory Stewart is a clever man - he's just not pro Brexit and didn't like Johnson.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 24/10/2022 17:31

Some were promoted far beyond their capability just because they agreed with and supported Brexit without question.

Seldom was a truer word spoken.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 17:34

There was an absolutely brutal interview re Brexit this morning

The sad thing is both parties are committed now so it’s not going to change to a SM if that’s what’s needed

Sunak should in theory have an idea how it could work as he wanted it at least but it’s a bit depressing atm

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 18:03

I maintain that Rory Stewart is to the Tories what David Milliband is to Labour - a lost opportunity. I wouldn’t say I agree with Rory Stewart on everything, I have not studied his voting record in full so would not want to say I believe in everything he says.

That said he’s obviously an intelligent and well informed man on matters around international development, defence, etc. He’s president of a charity working to help people in East Africa (spends a lot of time there judging by his Twitter feed) and lectures in Politics at Yale. He’s also principled in that he said he would not serve under Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservatives and as a result of BoJo’s election he resigned from the Cabinet and a few months later announced he had left the Tory party and would stand down at the next general election.

Timeline for tomorrow from BBC:

We've just reported that Rishi Sunak will officially become the UK's new prime minister tomorrow.

Straight from No 10, here are the key timings to be aware of:

09:00: Liz Truss will chair a cabinet meeting

10:15: The outgoing PM will make a statement outside No 10 before travelling to Buckingham Palace for her final audience with King Charles III, where she will formally resign.

Sunak, the new Conservative Party leader, will then travel to Buckingham Palace for his first audience with the monarch and be invited to form a government

11:35: Sunak - who will at this point officially be prime minister - will then travel to Downing Street and make his own statement before entering No 10 as the UK's 57th prime minister

mrshoho · 24/10/2022 19:54

It does feel as though the nation and the financial markets have collectively taken a sigh of relief. The torture of having to witness the Conservatives selecting a new leader did not get dragged out for the week. Now we wait and watch to see what cabinet he puts together. I know the future is far from rosie but at least we have a period of calm that we would definitely not have had from Johnson or Mordaunt.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 24/10/2022 20:08

I’m just watching Nadine Dorries on Piers Morgan Uncensored <masochist>. Good grief. Cringe worthy doesn’t even begin to describe it.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 24/10/2022 20:08

On Talk TV.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 20:21

I did lol at this clip of Sunak completely blanking Hancock and Hancock's crestfallen expression.

mrshoho · 24/10/2022 20:23

Yes that Hancock snub was tv gold.

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 21:10

I think it's important to have low expectations. To survive, Sunak has to ensure interest rates do not creep higher, because that is going to hit people hard in six to nine months time.

He will have no tricks or money to spend. He spent it already. The measure of the man is whether he can boy make things worse. The Conservatives have lost the next election but not necessarily two. They have bad ratings without the full economic impact of what he and Kwarteng did.

What is he like under sustained pressure? We are going to find that out soon.

Apparently tonight the conservative membership website is down as a result of so many logging in to cancel their membership..

Really I just looked and it’s working here?

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 21:30

i Know I’m THAT poster who keeps banging on about the podcasts, it today’s The Rest is Politics is another good listen. They talk a lot about how much they hate Boris and what a buffoon he is, but also made some interesting comments about the new Cabinet. Rory Stewart said he thinks Rishi should bring back some of the “old guard” who got sidelined by Boris, those with experience who can add gravitas. He suggested Theresa May for Foreign Secretary which actually could be a very good call.

It must be back up now, people were reporting an error message on the FAQ page on how to cancel membership.

Liz Truss has resigned. Part 4: The Desolation of Boris
LexMitior · 24/10/2022 21:37

@CaveMum - it's a reasonable point that much Tory talent is not used.

But what I know about Sunak is that he is all for deregulation. Don't think he's a one nation man, he's Brexit man.

It's full steam ahead attack on Rishi. They wanted rid of Boris because of his lying, infidelities, use of Latin, his wife, boozy lifestyle, his appearance etc etc. Now we've got the opposite in RS, it's attacks on boring delivery, appearance, his wife and of course downright racism. Nothing much about policy mind.

StoneofDestiny · 24/10/2022 21:59

I'm not on Twitter either - but one thing I'm certain of - the Tory Party is a cesspit

Blocked · 24/10/2022 22:06

Anyone else half expect to see Chris Whitty appear beside Sunak when he was doing his statement Blush covid flashbacks!

Oh give up. I could make the same wild generalisation about the SNP.

BirmaBrite · 24/10/2022 22:29

I wouldn't be suprised if JRM gets to stay in some capacity.

I love that podcast - they really know what they're talking about. I agree - the best thing Rishi could do both for stability within the party, but also for trust and credibility with the public is to clear out all the talentless sycophants like Dorries, Braverman etc, and bring in experienced and trusted politicians like May.
