To think working class shows?

I work in a lovely school where they’ve all had very different upbringings to me. Very much working class here. Sometimes I think it shows with little things I’ve noticed.

Having sugar in tea, using a tumble drier, not having a cleaner, using the wrong glasses for different drinks (I.E using the same one for everything!)… what else am I missing that excludes me from the club 😂 sometimes I will mention something like the above and get “oh I never use a tumble drier” … then I just think oops have I said something weird there?

Sometimes I think they’re judging me with things I say and do but I hope not! I grew up being homeless at a certain point, council houses, single teen (but amazing) mum, a very specific type of circle. I feel like Mum did everything she could to get us out of that way of life, but I can’t help but feel I don’t belong sometimes. Or that I stick out like a sore thumb. Am I being daft? Imposter syndrome a little bit!

And how much you pay. Ikos, Mark Warner etc are frightfully MC.

mmm
Mark Warner seems to have the same demographic as Centre Parts
newly or aspiring middle class- you would only go to somewhere like that if you or your friends didnt have a house or site you would go to instead.

I know MC families that do have access to their own/family or friends summer houses but have gone on MW holidays for their sporty kids.

This sounds so wannabe upper MC. That level of money for holiday homes etc is quite high, higher than many genuinely old money MC.

I think lots of families bought properties in the 60s and 70s when they were cheap and still have them. Definitely not UC.

antelopevalley · 31/10/2022 19:58

There are 67,000 holiday homes in the UK

Sugar in tea is an abomination

Although not as heinous a crime as sugar in coffee

Since when was sugar in tea or coffee a crime ?!?!? I have one sugar in tea and about two or three in a coffee, as I can't stand the bitter taste without sugar, sounds pretty normal to me 🙄

whittingtonmum · 28/01/2023 20:19

Snobbery around class his definitely a thing so it isn't all in your head.

The important thing is: What are your strategies so this doesn't get to you, you remain confident and proud of your roots and you won't let it hold you back?

Coffee is a bitter drink, that is the taste it is supposed to be - three sugars is not great, its just sugar water at that point

As this thread has been dug up I'll add another - sweet and sour sauce - another absolute criminal offense of an invention

What has using a tumble drier got to do with class. What do upper classes do? Stand there and fan their clothes dry?

And having a cleaner has nothing do with class. It’s about affordability.

ComfortablyDazed · 28/01/2023 21:46

Apparently the upper class drap their wet clothes and linen all over the place like some make-shift laundromat.

Classy.

newnamethanks · 30/01/2023 13:25

My mother used to send our washing to a laundry. All the big stuff, bedlinen, towels, etc, only small items washed at home. A tumble drier was unheard of. Now, sadly, laundries are gone. Unpacking the freshly laundered, starched and ironed linen was a treat. I'd happily chuck out washing machine and dryer if I could do the same.

Some of you have misread the post… I’m the one who doesn’t care about these things! But as some of you have pointed out, maybe they don’t either. And obviously I’m not bringing it up randomly, it’s when it naturally comes into conversation @LadybirdsAreNeverHappy

I remember it started when I was at uni and they shared statistics about how unlikely it was a child from my “social background” would ever get to university. The idea was that we as teachers could help that, but I remember being sat in that lecture hall feeling like I was the odd one out. Overthinking then and probably overthinking now!

And that might be what sets you apart.
MC people don’t worry about not belonging, they just think they do.

Whereas tumble driers leave that smell you get in charity shops on clothes, line, air dried don't have that fustyness

fustiness

larchforest · 30/01/2023 14:45

People might think that working class shows, and I wouldn't know about that, but it is pretty easy to spot judgemental bigotry.

TheKeatingFive · 30/01/2023 15:26

I opened this forgetting it was the thread about tumble driers. 😂

I have nothing to add to this madness. As you were.

kerstina · 30/01/2023 17:46

I am working class but I don’t have sugar in my tea and you wouldn’t either if you have ever been a dental nurse . I don’t use a drier as hate static on clothes.
I had never had hoummus until I moved in with my DP. So that one is probably spot on. I don’t use the word Hon or hunny to anyone as that irritates me for some reason. Feels patronising some how .

Drap?

You’re ever so helpful.

Clearly, it’s a typo.

Drip!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 31/01/2023 06:50

Or drape?

myfaceismyown · 31/01/2023 11:09

Not sure if its dripping or draping... I hang my laundry from the sheila maid in our utility room pulled up to ceiling height. The sunlight from the velux window dries everything really well. No drips or drapes...!

I salt my tea, although I am very sophisticated.

@newnamethanks
I work next door to a company that does laundry. It always smells great. They wash Iron and deliver. 😀

user1498572889 · 31/01/2023 14:47

I have 2 tumble dryers and 2 washing machines. When we all had norovirus i was very glad. In the summer i line dry everything i just cant stand to have wet clothes hanging about the house in winter.

fUNNYfACE36 · 01/02/2023 12:02

I suspect the tumble dryer thing has originated from their condemnation by ecowarriers who are largely middle class.
I personally think the ability to spell 'tumble dryer' tells me more about your class than whether you use one!!
