To think this was not a hygienic way to clean up sick?

I am fully prepared to be told I am being unreasonable but have name changed
as this will easily identify me!

Personally, the situation gave me the ick but others may not have batted an eyelid.

Out for lunch yesterday. Child at a nearby table threw up all over the floor.

The waitress got this sawdust looking stuff and covered the sick. She then came back a few minutes later with some cleaning wipes and proceeded to clean it up (no gloves or mask).

When she was done, she wiped her hands with a wipe and then continued to wipe down tables etc.

Thank goodness we were about to leave anyway as there’s no way I would have wanted her handling anything after doing that.

Aibu to think that’s really, really unhygienic and not a great way to clean up sick in a public eating place? 🤔

What sort of person walks out of a restuarant after their kid has been sick all over the floor, leaving it for a waitress to clean up?!

Soubriquet · 23/10/2022 15:25

Well ideally she should have at least washed her hands afterwards

It wasn't ops child...

thelobsterquadrille · 23/10/2022 15:25

The poor waitress shouldn't have been stuck cleaning it up, for starters!

She should have washed her hands afterwards, but otherwise I can't see an issue? Why would she need to wear gloves and a mask?

Yes i realise this. I think its obvious that the waitress was totally gross for "cleaning" like that. But the parents were more unreasonable for leaving her to clean it up!

Floydthebarber · 23/10/2022 15:31

The sawdust and wipes would have cleaned it up, I guess they mop later? And it would be entirely up to her whether she wanted gloves but absolutely should have washed her hands. Who wouldn't wash their hands after!?

TooShyShyShhh · 23/10/2022 15:32

I imagine the sawdust stuff was (I hope) some bodily fluids clean up powder. It absorbs it but YANBU in that she should have been wearing gloves. She still should have gone and washed her hands after cleaning it up though after disposing if everything and taking her gloves off.
I’d be emailing or leaving a review & I wouldn’t be in a rush to go back there.

Elderemo · 23/10/2022 15:37

I'm hoping it was powder made for cleaning up vomit, we have it in a kit. She didn't use it correctly though. Gloves and mask (mask optional) sprinkle the powder, let it absorb. Scrape into hazmat bag then sanitise area and clean.

And of course, wash hands. A lot.

Bonjovispjs · 23/10/2022 15:40

They always used sawdust (or whatever it was) to clear up sick when I was at school back in the 70s, not sure why, but it's obviously been going on a long time.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 23/10/2022 15:43

Which training course do you send people on for this?

She just did what SHE thought best. Not even her job!

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 23/10/2022 15:44

Sawdust would also be used for oil spillages

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 15:49

Apart from not washing her hands afterwards I can’t see the problem.

This, they use it at schools. It is not actually sawdust, but designed to disinfect sick and absorb it all.

Dilbertian · 23/10/2022 15:55

I occasionally have to clean up sick/wee/poo in my job.

Process is:

  1. Immediately sprinkle an absorbent powder thickly over it (this may be the 'sawdust').

  2. Put on gloves and get the rest of the cleaning kit reserved for this purpose. It is colour-coded to ensure that the things are only used for bodily waste.

  3. Scrape up with dustpan and tool and bag it.

  4. Clean area with disinfectant liquid and/or wipes as appropriate.

  5. Clean tools with disinfectant wipes.

  6. Bag the wipes.

  7. Put the bags in another bag, add the gloves, and bin in outdoor bin.

  8. Wash hands.

Stravaig · 23/10/2022 16:03

Sawdust is traditional, it absorbs any liquid, then it can be swept up with a dustpan and brush. Source: primary school janitors, 1970's!

The waitress could have washed her hands - the optics are reassuring in a public space - but she did clean them with the cleaning wipes. So mostly you are being precious.

I suppose the waitress could have donned a Hazmat suit and closed the cafe while she sanitised thoroughly, but that kind of thing is bad for business, so 🤷‍♀️

"Don't put sawdust on that.... I think it's my liver"
Ah, memories of school, sick and sawdust!

A person dealing with a sick child.....? Perhaps getting them out as fast as possible before they vomited again.....

Georgeskitchen · 23/10/2022 16:33

There should be someone trained (usually a first aider) in a high risk food establishment, to clean up hazardous liquids/bodily fluids. Plastic apron and gloves mask(optional) and a hazardous materials kit. I wouldn't be eating there in a hurry if I saw how it had been.cleaned up!!

MapleandAcorn · 23/10/2022 20:09

It was the lack of handwashing more than anything else 🤢

PriOn1 · 23/10/2022 20:16

Not wearing gloves, not washing hands, then cleaning tables….

I wouldn’t be eating there again and it would be no surprise if there was an outbreak of norovirus related to this incident.

Sweetmotherofallthatisholyabov · 23/10/2022 20:18

Where was the bin?

winterchills · 23/10/2022 20:26

She definitely should have been wearing gloves 😷

LunchBoxPolice · 16/11/2022 10:36

Yeah that’s gross. I wouldn’t go back.

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2022 10:37

If the wipes are anything like we have at work, they're very potent and would kill any nasties on her hands.

I'd have washed mine anyway but just because she didn't, doesn't mean her hands weren't clean.

Kastri · 16/11/2022 11:37

I couldnt eat there again.
