To think this was not a hygienic way to clean up sick?

I am fully prepared to be told I am being unreasonable but have name changed
as this will easily identify me!

Personally, the situation gave me the ick but others may not have batted an eyelid.

Out for lunch yesterday. Child at a nearby table threw up all over the floor.

The waitress got this sawdust looking stuff and covered the sick. She then came back a few minutes later with some cleaning wipes and proceeded to clean it up (no gloves or mask).

When she was done, she wiped her hands with a wipe and then continued to wipe down tables etc.

Thank goodness we were about to leave anyway as there’s no way I would have wanted her handling anything after doing that.

Aibu to think that’s really, really unhygienic and not a great way to clean up sick in a public eating place? 🤔

I am a bit gobsmacked at some of these responses...'ideally' she should be washing her hands...she 'could' have washed her hands etc...

A waitress cleaning up sick and not thoroughly washing their hands for 20 seconds plus with plenty of soap, before touching other things in the restaurant especially tables where customers actually eat....is grim and surely breaks all health and safety guidelines

We get puke at school often.

We have some stuff that's a bit like cat litter we Chuck over it to soak it up. The stuff also deodorises and has antibacterial properties.

I would absolutely wear gloves though. And wash my hands afterwards too.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 16/11/2022 11:43

"If the wipes are anything like we have at work, they're very potent and would kill any nasties on her hands.

I'd have washed mine anyway but just because she didn't, doesn't mean her hands weren't clean."

Has the pandemic taught us nothing!? Wipes are never an acceptable substitute for hand washing and do not effectively sanitize hands

Cleveramazing · 16/11/2022 11:45

Yes I think most people would have worn gloves and washed hands but she shouldn’t be having to do that in her job ! The parent should have cleaned up before leaving.

Ex Food safety EHO here - waitress isn't at fault as there should be a procedure for clearing/cleaning up bodily fluids in the business's hazard analysis, for food handlers.
Sounds like poor management and lack of training/procedures.

Agree about the washing hands part except that you don't know how effective the wipe was that she used.

Sawdust was always used when I was at school in the 1970's and was extremely effective at absorbing the vomit and smell

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 16/11/2022 12:16

I mostly agree with you but a thorough wipe with a proper anti-bac/alcohol wipe is probably more effective than your average hand wash so I'm a little on the fence.

Did she definitely not wash hands? Could it be that she disposed of the sick into a bin out the back and there was a staff bathroom/sink out there too? Is it a fully open kitchen?

FrownedUpon · 16/11/2022 12:33

That’s disgusting & puts me off eating out even more. A dose of vomit with your lunch & staff who don’t follow basic hygiene rules.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/11/2022 14:08

It wouldn't have bothered me so long as an very thorough hand washing and swapping of cleaning products was made after the cleaning had gone on.

As this clearly didn't happen, YANBU. Gross.

Vaguely reminds me of the time a woman brought her not-yet-potty-trained child to Costco who proceeded to shit every few steps which of course was then smeared across multiple shoes and trolleys. When I told her the child was pooing she said "I know we're leaving now". Oh ok love, don't worry I'll clean that up for you Hmm. Minging.

Germolenequeen · 27/12/2022 20:25

Def YANBU - hands should definitely have been washed and a mask would have protected the waitress from catching anything via inhalation.
I would nit be going back either.
