I can't go back to A n E immediately, can I?

Ds (14 months) has been having a bad cold and high temperature for 5 days. I just took him to A n E because he's just sleeping and csl%ol and nurofen aren't really bringing the temp down significantly and he hasn't eaten anything for days. Anyway we spent ok afternoon there and they checked him over and said it's just viral (probably rsv) and he should be better in a few days. I asked them when to worry and they said no wet nappies, lethargy and cold hands and feet.

We've been at home for an hour and now he's worse than ever. He's having chills. His temperature is 40.3C and his hands and feet are cold. His skin is mottled. I have just given him nurofen again and he's sleeping now. I don't know what to do. Surely if they've just seen him it can't be that serious right? Chest, ears and throat they said are fine. No UTI.

I'm sure if I call 111 they'll send me to a n e. They always do for small kids. Ugggh.

There's too much other shit going on as well but I'm really worried for Ds.

I'm sorry you had to go through that @LoveMyCats1

My eldest had sepsis when she was a baby, so I understand what it's like.

Marmee53 · 22/10/2022 21:36

@LoveMyCats1 sorry I just read your reply properly.

I'm sorry you didn't receive the care your child should have.

I hope they're ok now.

PickAnyName · 22/10/2022 21:36

Go back to A&E. you can’t afford to risk him deteriorating further. Better to be on the safe side. Meningitis and sepsis can kill. Get him checked!

I hope your DS is okay. I remember contacting a medical professional I knew once for advice on whether I'd be seen as a time waster to take DD to A&E about something. He said anything with kids tends to be justifiable, because a mother's intuition is almost always right, so please take him back. Thinking of you x

The problem is that my instincts are telling me he's fine. His worrying symptoms have disappeared.

Mine would have died if I hadn't he was negligently sent home. Trust your instincts.

OP's instincts seem to be that her child doesn't need to be seen. now the symptoms have gone.

I understand why you're unsure OP. My children and baby grandson always get mottled skin when they have a fever.

I would probably call 111 and explain it to them, tell them the symptoms have now gone and see what they say.

Whiskeypowers · 22/10/2022 21:38

What happens in two hours if he deteriorates again?
on the basis of what you’ve hated it would be an immediate return to a & e for me

Jimmini · 22/10/2022 21:38

go back to a&e. I was sent home from hospital 5 times as a wee’un until I was rushed to great ormond street with septicaemia. Trust your instincts

Call 111 and hopefully, they can put you through to a clinician. I'd very closely monitor his symptoms whilst you are waiting for contact, obviously.

CatSeany · 22/10/2022 21:42

If you're worried then take him back as they can always admit him overnight for observation to see whether he improves or deteriorates. If his symptoms are similar to what they were earlier then I'd just make sure you sleep near him overnight and keep a close eye.

generalh · 22/10/2022 21:43

Bloody hell. Just go to the hospital. The amount of time you have wasted posring on here would have been better spent driving to the flaming hospital.

WishingWell5 · 22/10/2022 21:43

Your instincts are probably (99%) right, but (and you might kick yourself) go back to a&e just in case.

What's the worse that's can happen if you do? Vs what's the worst that's can happen if you don't?

tolerable · 22/10/2022 21:47

take him back.Immediately. now.

GenghisCalm · 22/10/2022 21:47

If you are worried go back to A&E if not go do your washing.

Why are you asking MN if you should go back and then arguing about not going back when 99% of the people who have taken the time to answer are telling you to go back?

senior30 · 22/10/2022 21:49

If your instinct is that he is fine but DH feels differently then at least let him take the baby to A&E. I couldn’t let my child sleep after seeing mottled skin, the temp wouldn’t bother me too much but mottled skin and cold extremities is a red flag

Why? OP has a child who is sleeping peacefully with no temperature and no symptoms of concern. Why would it be better to take him to A&E?

eatyourcrustspls · 22/10/2022 21:51

@Novum he has a temperature of 38! And that's with meds.

Op does it help to take a look at this?

www.nhs.uk/conditions/fever-in-children/

SD1978 · 22/10/2022 21:56

@Novum - because she posted a few hours ago basically describing her child as potentially having sepsis, using all the words the doctor had told to her return if she witnessed, and has since spent the next few hours (pleasantly enough) arguing with everyone who has advised her to follow the doctors recommendations. That's why.

Misspacorabanne · 22/10/2022 21:56

Hi op, it's awful when they are Ill. Such a worrying time. When ds was a toddler he had a very high temp and poorly, at the out of hours our doctor told me that mottled skin can be from a high temp, which would make sense if it's now gone if the temp has come down. If he's sleeping peacefully, mottled skin gone, I'd be tempted to keep a very close watch over him. I also noticed if I gently pressed on his hand the mottled skin would fade when pressed which was reassuring. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to go back if your dc goes down hill again during the next few hours.

bernfinn89 · 22/10/2022 21:59

thats a very high temp..it its not coming down you need to go back..i hope hes ok

NoGoodUsernamee · 22/10/2022 21:59

Hi OP.
I think my daughter (3) may have the same thing as your son. Very runny, snotty nose… just streaming. Almost constant temperature, tired, not eating much… we’re on day 2 & I am worried. But like you my gut is telling me she is ok and it’s viral.

Glad to hear DS’s symptoms aren't as worrying as earlier. Definitely sounds like he needs rest
more than urgent medical attention. Keep an eye over night I really hope he (& my DD) are a bit better in the morning!

Palmtree9 · 22/10/2022 22:00

Is this post for real? OP, you listed many concerning symptoms at the start, which the Dr even said to go back for. Then given several excuses not to go, like washing(?!), and most of the responses here are to go

Trust your instincts
Of you think you should go, go. Don't rely on Mumsnet to tell you whether to go or not

bernfinn89 · 22/10/2022 22:01

when my little one had meningitis his hands very ice cold and a temp on almost 41..

neveradullmoment99 · 22/10/2022 22:02

InTrussWeTruss · 22/10/2022 20:47

His hands are warm now but his feet are still cold. Is mottled skin an issue? The doc there said that no matter how high his temp goes it's nothing to worry about

The mottled skin may just be because he has a temperature and because the heat is in the core of his body, the skin can become paler in arms and legs. This was what I was told in the past when my ds was a toddler.
I think, that aside, it temperature is ridiculously high. I would definitely take him back.
