I can't go back to A n E immediately, can I?

Ds (14 months) has been having a bad cold and high temperature for 5 days. I just took him to A n E because he's just sleeping and csl%ol and nurofen aren't really bringing the temp down significantly and he hasn't eaten anything for days. Anyway we spent ok afternoon there and they checked him over and said it's just viral (probably rsv) and he should be better in a few days. I asked them when to worry and they said no wet nappies, lethargy and cold hands and feet.

We've been at home for an hour and now he's worse than ever. He's having chills. His temperature is 40.3C and his hands and feet are cold. His skin is mottled. I have just given him nurofen again and he's sleeping now. I don't know what to do. Surely if they've just seen him it can't be that serious right? Chest, ears and throat they said are fine. No UTI.

I'm sure if I call 111 they'll send me to a n e. They always do for small kids. Ugggh.

There's too much other shit going on as well but I'm really worried for Ds.

His hands are warm now but his feet are still cold. Is mottled skin an issue? The doc there said that no matter how high his temp goes it's nothing to worry about

Go back k immediately please x

EdinaMonsoon · 22/10/2022 20:47

Absolutely go back. Don't bother with 111. Head to A&E reception and say that you were told to come back if any changes and be very forceful in stating what those changes are. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about OP but honestly if I were in your situation I wouldn't hesitate.

No hesitation, straight back to a&e. He's red flag for sepsis.

Can I ask why?.is it the cold hands and feet? (His hands are warm now)

Please go back, no doctor worth their title will ever blame a mother seeking a second look when their child is clearly pretty unwell. I'm sure your wee one will be fine but clearly has a lot going on and your gut is telling you to go back and I think you should listen. Sending much love and strength, don't leave that hospital until you feel safe sure and happy enough to do so. We're all with you! fight if you have to.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 22/10/2022 20:43

Go. Sepsis is a real risk and it's not worth the risk of wait and see

Yup.

been here twice, don’t mess around just go back

lawandgin · 22/10/2022 20:50

@InTrussWeTruss yes, plus temperature and mottled skin.

Derrymum123 · 22/10/2022 20:50

Go back. As others have said, you are his advocate. You know him best.
Sending love and prayers to you and yours.

Ukholidaysaregreat · 22/10/2022 20:50

I think yes go back to A and E. You can present at A and E as many times as you need to if your baby is ill. Good Luck.

Googlecanthelpme · 22/10/2022 20:51

I also want to add a few months ago I was in a&e for what seemed to be a bad infection. They did a few bloods and things and said I was fine just viral go home rest etc.
Ended up back in a&e couple days later very ill with a terrible bacterial infection that took me 3 weeks to recover from.
Just because one doctor thinks it’s fine, doesn’t mean another wouldn’t have a different view

HyggeandTea · 22/10/2022 20:52

Are any of the symptoms like this?

If so straight to A&E. xx

Dontknowwhyidoit · 22/10/2022 20:52

Take him back, better to be safe than sorry. If you feel he has worsened, then he goes back and you tell them. Sometimes you have to take a stance, your child's health not something to be timid about.

My gut feeling is that he's fine but dh is very worried. Maybe he is right.

Go back OP. Better a wasted journey than a missed one!

Mottled skin... go back

WeAreAllDead · 22/10/2022 20:53

A temp of over 40 absolutely requires A&E in a baby.

“The doc there said that no matter how high his temp goes it's nothing to worry about”

This doc is an idiot - that is absolute fucking nonsense. My child had fever spikes and I was ALWAYS told to get urgent help over 40.

DodgyLeftLeg · 22/10/2022 20:54

Definitely take back. And which doctor said ‘however high the temp gets it’s fine’ - never heard that one.

Second opinion pronto.

User367259791 · 22/10/2022 20:54

Take him back. Good departments always say “come back if something changes or you are worried.” Take photos of the mottling.

user159 · 22/10/2022 20:55

Please go back. I'm not a panicker but id never forgive myself if I had the slightest doubt - which you must if you're asking here. Good luck

Take him back!!! The Dr you spoke to is a complete knob! No matter how high his temp is???? Febrile seizures are a massive risk here now! As a mum of a medically fragile child I would be very concerned with the symptoms you are describing.

Only the mottled skin. He is breathing fast but has done so for days. His skin over the ribs isn't sucking in. Body is warm. Only his feet are cold.

girlmom21 · 22/10/2022 20:55

Go back. His symptoms have worsened.
The doctors would rather see a child who doesn't need to be there than not see a child who does.

Judijudi · 22/10/2022 20:56

I’d go to A&E

BattenburgDonkey · 22/10/2022 20:56

Just take him back. If a parent has a gut feeling that he needs to be seen then take him, and your DH has that gut feeling. You’d rather be embarrassed about being over cautious (the staff won’t care) than wrong about keeping him home right?

bloodywhitecat · 22/10/2022 20:56

Mottled skin is an indicator of possible sepsis, on that basis alone he needs reviewing at A&E.
