To think cinemas will soon become obsolete?

Reasons why:

  1. Home media systems are getting bigger and better as each year passes.
  2. Society is getting more inconsiderate as each year passes and people think nothing of yakking all the way through a film or playing on their phone/kids playing on their ipads.
  3. Films are available through home streaming 1 or 2 months after a cinema release these days, not like before when it would take over a year until a video/DVD release.
  4. The cost, which isn't worth points 2 and 3.
  5. The after effects of covid and lockdown and films being released on home media only - people realising they don't actually miss the cinema at all.

I don't think you are being unreasonable, but I really hope it's not the case. I love a trip to the cinema.

lllllllllll · 22/10/2022 19:38

I live in London and our local cinema is frequently very busy. Might be different in the regions.

Elieza · 22/10/2022 19:38

Radio is still here a million years after all of the aforementioned leaps in tech.

m Or perhaps I’m the only one who listens! 😂

You don't pay for radio every time you listen to it though. (Well you used to have to physically pay for a radio, but not any more).

Probably right! Mine always seen quiet. Cost of the snacks keeps them open. Needa bank loan each time I go just for snacks 😆

I'm not a huge cinema fan. Kids like it but otherwise I'd rather stay home.

I've stopped going because of 2.

It's just not worth it.

JohnsShirt · 22/10/2022 19:40

I hope not, I go at least once a week.
I love Cinema, seeing films on a big screen just can't be compared to home at all.
I've been 32 times so far this year.

BobStrangeNameforaGirl · 22/10/2022 19:41

YABU. Four of us are going to our local Vue on Wednesday. £22 for the tickets, using meerkat codes. All seats are the big recliner types and Vue let you take in your own sweets etc. I think it's an absolute bargain, and nothing beats a huge screen. Top Gun was incredible on it.

Echobelly · 22/10/2022 19:41

I don't think they'll ever vanish entirely, but they may have to become more specialist and attach more attractions to make people come to them; maybe the big multiplex is over but more independent ones will survive?

We have a multiplex that since COVID reopening, until recently, seemed to be trying a scheme of showing everything multiple times a day, with a fixed low price all the time and with minimal staffing - but I notice they've recently stopped that as evidently it wasn't working out for them. Most times we've been there in the last year it's been pretty dead.

BatshitBanshee · 22/10/2022 19:41

I used to love the cinema but I don't miss it. No dread over who you're sitting next to, arsey teenagers or overpriced snacks. I love love loved going on my own in the afternoons but I can't be bothered now. We put in a home cinema set up with projector and screen so we're much comfier here. And it's cheaper.

Needmorelego · 22/10/2022 19:42

Nope.
My daughter is currently en route home from going to a special showing of a Halloween themed film at the cinema.
A few months ago she went weekly because they were showing a series of Studio Ghibli films.
We are very excited and waiting to see Matilda.
Many cinemas also show or stream music concerts and stage performances so a wider audience can access them.
Some stuff really is better on the big screen. Much much better.

35965a · 22/10/2022 19:42

I’m not sure really, there is a cinema I have to walk past most days and during the day it’s steady but every night and weekend the carpark is full and way busier than you’d expect. If there’s a new ‘big’ film out it’s busy all day for the first few days.

floridaplanner · 22/10/2022 19:42

I really like going to the cinema but it is expensive.

I noticed recently one of the adverts was for a new film and then the actors from the film came on to tell you why you should see that film in the cinema rather than at home which I felt was telling.

Whycanineverever · 22/10/2022 19:44

I think they will just adapt.

Our local one has started showing kids films and making an event of it. So polar express and come in pj's. Or a halloween one with dress up.

I went to a curzon and they brought drinks and food to your seat etc.

I even go more to our local one now it has recliners etc - makes it a nicer experience.

Kanaloa · 22/10/2022 19:44

I hope not. By the way it’s not always very expensive. The one near me is £5 a ticket. So not ridiculously pricey depending on where you live.

I like the cinema. I do notice it’s rarely really busy nowadays like it used to be. But I also never go on a weekend evening or anything anymore, so that could also be why.

Keyansier · 22/10/2022 19:44

I suppose something I didn't think about could be unique experiences. I know 3D cinema didn't really take off but if they can improve and monopolise on it, that could draw people in.

Didn't know Vue allowed snacks without smuggling either.

Last time I went to the cinema was in 1993 to watch Schindler's list. I found the seats uncomfortable, the sound a bit too loud and muffled for my ears (and I couldn't adjust it) yet I managed to get most of the plot which reduced me to tears. I was still crying when my ex-h and I walked up the road to where we had parked the car. I vowed then - never again would I visit a cinema! And I haven't!

QueSyrahSyrah · 22/10/2022 19:45

I understand your points but I certainly hope not. DH and I have membership and go often.

We also buy snacks since the card gets us 25% off.

We're quite lucky at our cinema and rarely get anyone too annoying, but we usually bide our time and wait a week or two to see a big release so the crowds have died down.

Birthdaycake25 · 22/10/2022 19:47

It's far too expensive. I only pay if there is something I really want to see and can't wait longer for it to come out on TV. But that is very rare, perhaps once a year. I think most films nowadays are rubbish! It's always superheroes or animations for kids. When was the last decent film which you thought that is going to be a classic watched over and over again?

Calminacrisis · 22/10/2022 19:47

We have an Everyman membership and use it regularly for date night. Great range of films, good food, comfy sofas, usually busy. I can’t abide Vue cinemas though.

donttellmehesalive · 22/10/2022 19:48

I love the cinema but go very infrequently now. I'd rather watch a movie at home. No adverts or trailers. Comfy clothes and seat. Darkness and quiet. Breaks to suit me. Affordable drinks and snacks. No drive/petrol costs or parking.

I do think they'll disappear but I'm sad about it. I don't know what they can do to save themselves now. Our local cinemas have tried a lot of different approaches - monthly subscriptions, special screenings etc but fundamentally it just isn't as cheap or convenient as staying at home.

MarshaBradyo · 22/10/2022 19:48

We never go just for us to see a film but my dc like it

RedRobyn2021 · 22/10/2022 19:48

I really enjoy the cinema, I hope it does keep going

Rewis · 22/10/2022 19:48

I hope not. Cinema is the only place I concentrate for 2.5h
Can't sit through a movie at home.
