If a car parks so close you can't get into your car, what do you do?

Do you just open your car door onto the car and push yourself in if you can fit that way?

If you're in a store carpark ask their customer services to call the owner of said vehicle. Only if you're unable to get in from the passenger side though.
I parked in Asda once next to the trolley store so I could open my back door wide enough to get baby in and out, a van parked up next to me and so I was wedged from both sides
The customer service lady called for the driver who was not best pleased but did move

Atmywitsend29 · 22/10/2022 15:30

I will just climb in from the back or in the passenger side tbh.
Or if there's enough room, I'll put my fingers between my door and theirs and just squeeze in the driver's side 😂

Norriscolesbag · 22/10/2022 15:30

You’d obviously get in the passenger side but I’d be absolutely fucking livid about having to do so… particularly if it was one of those utter nobheads who parks right next to your car when there are a million other free spaces without cars around. Happens to me every time I park a bit further away to avoid this- come back to find someone has parked right next to me when they have their pick of spaces.

Devoutspoken · 22/10/2022 15:31

The driver was not best pleased? Bloody cheek

FixTheBone · 22/10/2022 15:33

I use the app on my phone to move my car out of its space.

emmathedilemma · 22/10/2022 15:33

Use the passenger side but having done it once it's actually really hard in my current car as the centre console is big and bulky.

bercan · 22/10/2022 15:35

Some car parks are very narrow space wise & lots of people now have wider cars so not sure why people are going key others over it.

Sh05 · 22/10/2022 15:36

Yup I'd interrupted his shopping trip and he was going to be late for work or something.
It was his own fault for parking over the line into my space especially as I'd parked so close to the barrier on the other side especially to get the baby in and out.

balalake · 22/10/2022 15:43

Get in the passenger side.

Highlights yet another reason why SUVs should be banned or made more difficult to own, as car parks are not designed for the proportion of cars that they are. I'd have SUVs as a separate category of car licence, so you'd have to take your test again, which I think would reduce their number.

LoveMyCats1 · 22/10/2022 15:47

If the door opened enough for me to get in while resting on their car I'd do that.

WinterCarlisle · 22/10/2022 15:48

It happened to me when I was v pregnant. Absolute bellend parked ridiculously close to my very normal sized car. I had the school run to do and ended up asking a very nice man if he could reverse it out for me.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/10/2022 15:49

I live in a city where on-street parking is hard to find at times and people squeeze into tight spots.

If someone has parked over a dropped kerb, left their car wide etc. it’s considered sufficient revenge to lift their windscreen wipers to a vertical position.
You haven’t done any damage but they know they’ve been an inconsiderate dick. Next time it might be a tip-off call to the traffic police.

So that’s what I’d do (and squeeze over the gear stick from the passenger’s seat.

JudithHarper · 22/10/2022 14:32

Maybe get in the passenger side?

I'd be keying the other car though.

Best hope its not a Tesla then...

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2022 15:55

If you can't get in either side - where are you? If a mall or attended parking lot I'd call the attendant to move my car out for me. If outside a Tesco (for example) I'd go ask customer service to page the other owner. I did once ask a much slimmer random stranger to back my car out once. I have done the climb over the middle when 34 weeks pregnant and did my back in badly so I'm never doing that again, pregnant or not.

ehb102 · 22/10/2022 15:56

Nasty of them isn't it? A van parked right on the white so there wasn't enough room for me to open my door. The skinny driver could get in and out and his fat mate could get out the other side but I'm a woman with lipoedema, I'm fat too. It's so inconsiderate and he was so awful about it "I parked in the space. I might leave it there." Selfish ignorant fucker.

Some car parks are very narrow space wise & lots of people now have wider cars so not sure why people are going key others over it.

Then the onus is on you with your massively oversized car to park properly in a space and not block others in. Park further away or in a different space if you're going to physically block entry. I don't condone keying cars, but this entitled 'my car is big what do you want me to do about it' behaviour is typical of today's society. You chose to by a stupidly big car, you should be the one inconvenienced, not everyone else.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/10/2022 15:58

You’d obviously get in the passenger side

It's been said already, but please don't 'other' the many of us living with disabilities, mobility problems, pregnancy, age-related frailty etc. etc.

Yes, it's the obvious solution if you can do it, but I find your use of the word 'obviously' quite dismissive and insensitive.

I find it easiest to get in via the drivers window if there isn’t enough space to fit through the door.

I don’t engage in wanton vandalism whilst doing so.

The real questions are how do we reduce the number parking spaces so they can be larger, or how do we encourage people to buy smaller cars so more people can park?

Keep the same number of spots. Make some 6 inches smaller and some six inches bigger. Mark the smaller spots for small cars. Would encourage people to buy smaller cars to have more parking options.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 22/10/2022 16:00

Someone did this to me once in a hospital car park. I parked in an end bay so I could get in and out easily. Some cunt decided to park really close to my car. I had to crawl from the passenger side. I’m not short either with long legs. Needless to say I left them an expletive laden letter.

They do this in the USA.
There is almost always a tiny thing in an SUV spot.

My suv, bought to replace my estate car is narrower and shorter than the old car. My choice of car was based purely on a boot space big enough to get my dog crate in.

bercan · 22/10/2022 16:03

@SmallPrawnEnergy but i've been to plenty of car parks where cars are within white lines but it's incredibly tight.

Park further away or in a different space if you're going to physically block entry

In London you don't tend to have the luxury of loads of empty spaces

You chose to by a stupidly big car, you should be the one inconvenienced, not everyone else.

I have a small car however i'm just pointing out the reality of some car parks

Would you really?? Never fails to amaze me the number of times comments like this are made on parking threads. Key someone's car costing hundreds of pounds damage & potentially get yourself a criminal record just because someone's parked badly 🤔

Yeah, keying a side panel usually means a full respray of that whole side as touch ups don't blend in very well. Talking about £600. Enough to warrant them trying to obtain the CCTV footage.

user627494927 · 22/10/2022 16:05

Why not have carparks create wider spaces, even if situated further from the shop for bigger cars?

Many people need wider and bigger vehicles for plenty of reasons other than to look good…

bercan · 22/10/2022 16:06

I guess they don't want to lose spaces/customers?
