To think archery has no place on a public playing field?

I live in a village with a large public sports/playing field - it has grass tennis courts, football pitches and such marked out. Dogs are allowed and I've always used it to give my dog a good run around (he's on a 50ft bright pink lead, not running loose. I tend to stick to the edges near the hedges so I'm not disturbing anyone!)

Walking today and just been shouted at by man setting up archery targets. They're set out so 1/3 of the field is now unusable. I'd planned to loop round the full field (as shown by the blue line- red dot is where he was setting up. Blue blob is where I entered the field!) He also wasn't shooting at the time so I'm not sure why he felt the need to shout at me that I couldn't go that way!

It's a public field with multiple access points - aibu to think that archery belongs somewhere where the access can be more controlled? A kid could quite easily run in from the side access and right across where he'd plonked himself!

I take the point about blocking out identifying info. But when that identifying info makes it abundantly clear that there is an archery club on site, it's a tad disingenuous!

Thing is when op took the screenshot herself she would of seen it as having an archery club on the field. Which answered her own question that clearly they are allowed to be there.

But she could still legitimately be wondering if some rogue archery club had set up shop in an area where they shouldn’t and that maybe there’s some rules regarding public footpaths etc which they weren’t abiding by.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 24/10/2022 10:48

Ok I didn't read it properly. I thought it was a public park not private property.

OhmygodDont · 24/10/2022 10:48

But it’s private property where the club has just been nice enough to let dog walkers use. There is no public footpath.

rwalker · 22/10/2022 15:17

I would of just given it a wide birth
tbh take a dog for a walk on a 50ft lead is ridiculous how can u be in control of a dog 50ft away tethered or not .not to mention dogs pissing and shitting on playing fields would of bother me more

Could the dog haters on MN give it a rest please, it's not even a dog thread.

It's not a police matter. Speak to the council to see if they allow archery on the playing field. It would only be a police matter if they were actually firing arrows without proper controls to stop people crossing the target range whilst shooting is taking place. They don't have to fence off any area, provided they control access in some manner, shouting warnings to people - and more importantly, stopping shooting if people ignore the warnings - is perfectly sufficient.

Basically, you can shoot on public land provided you do not endanger people or property. By definition, if an area is clear of people and property (however that clearance is maintained) they cannot be endangered.

Tell me you've never done archery without telling me you've never done archery ...

GregJP · 24/10/2022 10:50

I definitely wasn’t prepared for this debate this morning 🙈 lol

WeisheitNurInWahrheit · 24/10/2022 10:50

Have also changed vote to YABU on @GregJP’s posts making it clear you seem to have been drawing the long bow here @IroningThrone 🤨

OhmygodDont · 24/10/2022 10:51

Close the gates Greg. Plant the pink dog lead owner. Be much easier than this drama haha

GregJP · 24/10/2022 10:51

Nice pun there lol 🏹

OhmygodDont · 24/10/2022 10:51

blame not plant. That would be a whole different thread.

GregJP · 24/10/2022 10:53

We have had a bit of transition since being there and understand most dog owners. Still get a lot of us to sod off but after explaining why we tell them not to go behind targets most understand. Some argue it’s public when it’s not and they perhaps can’t read?. Or more than likely don’t care.

WeisheitNurInWahrheit · 24/10/2022 10:53

@GregJP
I tried to resist. For about 3 seconds. 🤷‍♀️

Yup, agree with PP. It looks to me like the OP just removed all wording they felt would identify the location and therefore leave them vulnerable to being recognised in real life. This is typical mn ettiquette and nothing more, imo.

Rubbish. The "identifying" info was, coincidentally, a legitimate publicly advertised club that OP is trying to say shouldn't be there? 🤔

Also, the street name is still visible, so not ALL identifying info was removed... just the stuff that didn't support OPs argument.

TheGhostOfLiz · 24/10/2022 10:54

"Rubbish"

Bit rude.

Unfortunately we do have to stop people walking behind the targets despite signage/ropes.

Some people don’t think you’ll miss or an arrow will hurt!.

We follow guidance from our governing body known as the Rules of Shooting (RoS).

We have a buffer of 50 yards so if someone is shooting 70 yards they would need 120 yards. Which takes you to the edge of the field.

But when people see the target half way in the field they assume it’s safe and you can’t miss. Unfortunately many factors can make you miss including miss fires, equipment failures. This is why we have the buffer.

The people that think you can't miss have clearly never seen my shooting...! At 70 yards it's a miracle if I hit anything! The metal detector normally gets a good outing when I'm shooting outside.

This is why I'm more of a fair weather archer - indoors shooting at 20m is far more enjoyable for me (and less expensive in terms of lost arrows!).

QuebecBagnet · 24/10/2022 11:04

Though I’m looking on bing maps and if I’m looking at the right field there’s no public footpaths?

BobLemon · 24/10/2022 11:07

GregJP · 24/10/2022 10:08

Looking at this image again from google maps I wonder why you blacked out the club name as that point was placed by me when I set it up on google. Makes us seem we should not legitimately be there?.

We have archery on our local playing field. The range is roped off, but there is no signage at the entrances to the field. It's a great club, so the adjustment for me is not to let my children use the playing field when the club is on. I have no problem with that at all. (I also choose not to use the footpath that runs right next to the side of the range. I know they allow for overshoot but I'm a scaredy cat!)

I'm interested in what the rules on signage are as until this thread, I had never considered individuals going to shoot outside of the club's advertised times. Does anyone have a link to satisfy my curiosity. It is a very reputable club so I have no doubts that they are doing everything properly, but I am the type of person who wants to know the rules once something has popped into my head.

GregJP · 24/10/2022 11:09

This is me also. Not competitive so I do judging and coaching. Alongside every other role in the club!.

GregJP · 24/10/2022 11:10

Lol 🤚🏻 🎤 💥

BlackberryCat · 24/10/2022 11:16

I hope the OP does the decent thing and comes back and apologizes, assuming she doesn’t live under a bridge.

even though, part of me does hope that she made an official complaint because “someone complained about people doing archery at the archery club” would definitely raise a laugh I think.

GregJP · 24/10/2022 11:16

Sent you a direct message.

GregJP · 24/10/2022 11:17

At blackberry. I am the secretary of the archery, sportsfield and charity so it would come through me lol.
