To think archery has no place on a public playing field?

I live in a village with a large public sports/playing field - it has grass tennis courts, football pitches and such marked out. Dogs are allowed and I've always used it to give my dog a good run around (he's on a 50ft bright pink lead, not running loose. I tend to stick to the edges near the hedges so I'm not disturbing anyone!)

Walking today and just been shouted at by man setting up archery targets. They're set out so 1/3 of the field is now unusable. I'd planned to loop round the full field (as shown by the blue line- red dot is where he was setting up. Blue blob is where I entered the field!) He also wasn't shooting at the time so I'm not sure why he felt the need to shout at me that I couldn't go that way!

It's a public field with multiple access points - aibu to think that archery belongs somewhere where the access can be more controlled? A kid could quite easily run in from the side access and right across where he'd plonked himself!

@CircleofWillis I think you sound daft. He's already explained about the entrances further up the thread, a thread that doesn't now need to continue.
He has been nothing but polite.
Stop looking to be offended where none is intended.

Just wanted to say that this thread has inspired me to take up archery. We are all keen shooters to begin with and archery seems like a good extension of this.

If you possibly can, make it field archery! So much more fun than just shooting at circular targets. Look up the NFAS website for a club near you.

The tone this thread has taken makes me feel quite uneasy. I read it when it originally came out and it left a bad taste in my mouth at that point as well.

It was established that the entrance the OP takes into the field was not labeled with appropriate warning signs and that this was dangerous.

I feel uncomfortable that the person running the archery group repeatedly mentions the fact that she is 'new to the village' and lives in one of the 'new builds'. Even his pompous 'we consider the matter closed' feels like he is silencing the OP.

I personally would not consider the matter closed until the dangerous entrance has proper warning signs or is closed off. I also think GregJP owes the OP an apology and a 'thank you' for bringing this possibly dangerous situation to his attention.

It would be closed if people stopped fucking resurrecting the dead thread

Thanks for the tip!😁

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Is there a reason you only decided to comment now and not sooner?.

The reason I regarded the matter as closed is to stop those who are commenting negatively towards the OP.

She highlighted an issue which actually is not one in my opinion. We have been shooting safely for many years and the villagers know us. I have, as you put it. Repeatedly stated the person was new to the area, this can give people a lot of information before even explaining anything. It’s not to be negative to the person but it’s a fact and thus I have stated it several times.

People using a PRIVATE field which is signposted and we allow them to use it when we are not using it.

One days when we shoot, cordons are in place, additional signage and with multiple archers and a field captain controlling the range. I would suggest you seek the Rules of Shooting which would give you further information on our procedures.

When people use or make alternative entrances this is not something we can control unless we put a big fence around. Even then part of our fences have been destroyed and replaced at our own cost. Like I said on days of shooting other things are in place.

Also the OP clearly knew there was a club there. She blacked out the club name. If she googled the map, she seen the club and clicking on the club provided her more details on who we are, what we do and when we shoot.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but with the facts one side will triumph (usually).

I thanked the OP for highlighting the issue and there certainly is no apology needed. Perhaps the OP could have explained why she blacked out the club (apart from the highlighting the location for privacy reasons).

Lastly feel free to come join us when we are back outdoors for our Spring/Summer Season.

Thanks for the tip!😁

I’ve never tried flight myself but it looks super fun. Very long day finding lost arrows and marking distances. I judged at an airfield in Leeds in September. Who would have thought. Shooting arrows are a working airfield was safe!.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 06/01/2023 18:06

If you really want to mix things up, have a crack at horse archery. It's always an experience when the targets are flying past you at 20-odd miles an hour Grin

GregJP · 06/01/2023 18:42

We’ve had enquiries for this. A girl had her own horse but as it’s new to us I’m sure insurance would be hard to get. I do know of clubs down south who offered and some clubs up north offered but it was bring your own horse haha 😂

I would of just given it a wide birth
tbh take a dog for a walk on a 50ft lead is ridiculous how can u be in control of a dog 50ft away tethered or not .not to mention dogs pissing and shitting on playing fields would of bother me more

Saying would of instead of would have bothers me more than dogs or archers on playing fields.

Still, as rwalker posted that in October 2022 it's probably not worth pointing out is it? 😂

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 15/10/2023 16:54

Well, maybe she/he's been writing it wrong this whole time so now she/he knows!

I actually didn't notice the date 🤭

DaenerysTarragon · 15/10/2023 17:01

😂It's a thread that just keeps giving.

OhmygodDont · 15/10/2023 17:31

Ah since this thread we have purchased our on archery gear and built a shooting range in the garden. 😅 lovely cheap place in norfolk for a little play with air rifles and bows, no angry dog walkers either 😂
