To not think an ensuite is better than a walk in wardrobe

Posted in Aibu for most traffic🤔 Advice needed please. Just moved to larger house. Main bedroom has what is listed as a large storage/wardrobe. A few similar houses in the cul de sac have converted it to an ensuite. We are tied between this conversion or a walk in wardrobe/ dressing room. It is not huge, approximately 2m x 1.8m. I have googled minimum space needed for ensuite shower room, and it is apparently 1.8m x 0.8m , so space is adequate. I have seen lots of posts on here about not liking a bathroom so close to bedroomWho needs partner's poo smells and loo flusing while trying to kip?
I would love a walk in wardrobe, although due to size of bedroom there is more than enough room for storage within. So wise forum folk what would you suggest. I think a dressing room is a good idea, so I don't disturb DH when I get up early for work and he is trying to lie in.

Much prefer a walk-in wardrobe - keeps the bedroom tidy and frees up floor space in there. En suites are pretty dreadful generally - dark, small, windowless and really who wants to wake to the sound of one’s partner peeing and farting 3 metres from your pillow? Bathroom down the hall every time!

If you already have two toilets in the house I would have a walk in wardrobe. I love our en suite but we only have one other bathroom so it was a priority for me. I use the en-suite and the men of the house use the main bathroom. During an episode of norovirus I was thankful for the extra toilet 😁

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/10/2022 11:09

I’ve never seen the point in en-suites outwith hotels at all, it’s not a particular hardship for me to walk the extra five metres down the hallway to the main bathroom in the morning. I’d prefer a dressing room, particularly since I’m bad at putting clean laundry away right away and it therefore sits untidily on the bedroom chair for a day or so. Being able to hide it away would be great.

cimena · 22/10/2022 11:11

Dressing room for sure

mogsrus · 22/10/2022 11:12

Ensuite & walk ins are great, especially when we have guests, can’t beat 2 bathrooms

Discovereads · 22/10/2022 11:12

I hate en-suites. Complete waste of space and too much extra cleaning faff.

GodInventedAmazon · 22/10/2022 11:14

Ensuite for me , I wouldn't move to anywhere without one now , so handy

mynameiscalypso · 22/10/2022 11:14

I would always prefer an en-suite because I would like to have a separate bathroom for myself (and DH use the family bathroom)

StoneofDestiny · 22/10/2022 11:14

en suite - much prefer private bathroom and it frees up other bathrooms for others/guests

Tumbleweed101 · 22/10/2022 11:15

I'm always amazed at how many toilets even the smallest new build houses have these days. One downstairs, one in the bathroom and one as an ensure! I'd rather have storage space. I'd be chosing a walk in wardrobe.

Peachyscream · 22/10/2022 11:17

I had 2 en-suites. I ripped it out and put fitted wardrobes in to make a walk in wardrobe for my bedroom.
My sons bedroom which is two metres from mine, I moved the doors around so it's a regular bathroom now. It's a regular sized family bathroom, big bathtub. Haven't regretted it at all.

Jarstastic · 22/10/2022 11:17

Ensuite for me. I don’t want to share a bathroom with teenage boys!

FakingMemories · 22/10/2022 11:17

Tough choice. We have both a dressing room and an en-suite bathroom and I wouldn’t want to give either of them up. Is there enough space in the bedroom to modify to fit both in?

Unicorn2022 · 22/10/2022 11:18

I hate en suites with a passion so would choose the wardrobe. If you ever move again you'd probably get better resale value with an en-suite.

tiredofthiisshit21 · 22/10/2022 11:19

En suite every time, and fitted wardrobes for you clothes. I don't want to share my bathroom with messy teens.

nokidshere · 22/10/2022 11:20

En suite for me, in a house full of men I want my own bathroom.

Era · 22/10/2022 11:23

En suite. I don’t think it’s really big enough for a decent dressing room anyway.

Threelittlelambs · 22/10/2022 11:24

Our en-suite is 14 foot square large windows and separate bath and shower - so not windowless or dull! But it is a hugh waste of space!

Roserunner · 22/10/2022 11:24

We made ours into an ensuite as we are in a townhouse and there isn't a bathroom on the top floor. We prob wouldn't have done it otherwise.

DancingInHisShirt · 22/10/2022 11:26

We have both but if I had to choose it would be an en-suite. It’s not dark, small, windowless or only 3m from my partners pillow though. 😬

WestendVBroadway · 22/10/2022 11:26

Thanks guys, although opinions are divided. We have a downstairs loo, but just occurred to me that it could be extended to make shower room. We would definitely install a dormer window to upstairs space whether we go for ensuite or dressing room. The fact that we know have an extra loo is bonus enough!

We went for walk in wardrobe. Shower room is right next to our bedroom and bathroom is downstairs so plenty of toilet availability. DH always has a bath as he has chronic join and muscle pain. I prefer the shower. Teen DC are reasonably civilised in their bathroom habits.

Ponoka7 · 22/10/2022 11:27

It depends on how heavy a sleeper you are and if you easily get back to sleep, otherwise you'll be disturbed by the use of the walk in. It also depends on how many people are in your house and if you have overnight guests. My vote would be for a wardrobe. Unless the potential for a loft conversion is there, they make great wardrobe spaces.

Daftasabroom · 22/10/2022 11:27

We have a bathroom and a separate shower room upstairs and a shower downstairs in the utility room. No ensuite, I couldn't think of anything worse.

We love our walk in airing cupboard.

Crunchingleaf · 22/10/2022 11:28

I think it depends on how many other bathrooms are in the house and who else lives in the house.
No kids then I definitely think you don’t need an en-suite unless you have a lot of house guests staying with you.
The walk in wardrobe is great especially if you and your OH work different hours. Who ever is up earlier can get dressed without disturbing the other person. Also bedroom is way tidier.
Our dressing room is between the bedroom and en-suite so there is privacy when your in the bathroom.
If you have or one day will have a couple teens then probably the en-suite is best.
