To not think an ensuite is better than a walk in wardrobe

Posted in Aibu for most traffic🤔 Advice needed please. Just moved to larger house. Main bedroom has what is listed as a large storage/wardrobe. A few similar houses in the cul de sac have converted it to an ensuite. We are tied between this conversion or a walk in wardrobe/ dressing room. It is not huge, approximately 2m x 1.8m. I have googled minimum space needed for ensuite shower room, and it is apparently 1.8m x 0.8m , so space is adequate. I have seen lots of posts on here about not liking a bathroom so close to bedroomWho needs partner's poo smells and loo flusing while trying to kip?
I would love a walk in wardrobe, although due to size of bedroom there is more than enough room for storage within. So wise forum folk what would you suggest. I think a dressing room is a good idea, so I don't disturb DH when I get up early for work and he is trying to lie in.

I will never get the Mumsnet hatred of en suites! We have one (with a window, and separate bath and shower), and I love it - it's my grown-up sanctuary away from the kids. We do have enough space for lots of wardrobes though. In my last house I had both a walk in wardrobe and en suite and I miss the walk in hugely, but not enough to ditch my lovely bathroom.

MyPurpleJacket · 22/10/2022 13:12

En-suite for me but it’s just personal preference. Do whatever you prefer.

MyAnacondaMight · 22/10/2022 13:12

How many other bedrooms and bathrooms are there? How many people live in the house? Can you show a floorplan?

It’s really not a question you can answer without knowing what the current set up is. I generally hate en-suites, but I also wouldn’t want a bedroom:bathroom ratio above 2:1.

Finerthings · 22/10/2022 13:12

We have a shower room downstairs instead.

It adds less value than an en suite but we far prefer it. You can shower any time of day or night without waking anyone asleep. Perfect when you have early rising toddlers or teens who stay up late. One loo upstairs is plenty at night and there's more privacy.

Bluevelvetsofa · 22/10/2022 13:12

My en-suite is bigger than the family bathroom too and has a walk in shower and a bath. DH has the family bathroom with an over bath shower. We’d actually like to replace that bath with a walk in shower.

I don’t know why people talk about peeing noises etc. There’s a solid door which is shut before any peeing takes place and it’s several metres from the bed. Not much different from walking down a corridor to the bathroom.

Worthyornot · 22/10/2022 13:19

I would definitely choose the en suite. Also, a window in any bathroom is a must. I have very modern built in cupboards so absolutely no need for a walk in closet. You would make much more use of the ensuite rather than a closet that you would spend probably 5min in.

Blaggertyjibbet · 22/10/2022 13:53

Definitely dressing room. A poky en-suite attached to a room that is crowded with clothing-related furniture is a lot less luxury than a spacious bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe.

WestendVBroadway · 22/10/2022 14:10

The downstairs loo is same size as the storage space, but quite generous for a cloakroom/toilet. I have one adult DC in final year at uni, no plans to move back to our town after graduation. So mainly just me and hubbie in 3 bedroom house.

I don’t understand how anyone could not want an en suite. I wouldn’t move anywhere without one.

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2022 14:26

En suite every time. I think it would add the most value too.

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/10/2022 14:35

Agree with @Crunchingleaf. I don’t have kids in the house, so probably don’t need an en suite, but I have one and a dressing room, and love both. We don’t use the en suite toilet much, but i use the shower, put my make up on in there etc. It comes into its own when ill (was invaluable when I had covid), and when we have guests (i don’t like sharing bathroom space).

KitchenSupper · 22/10/2022 14:36

If you get faecal germs all over your bedroom when you’re using an en suite, you’re probably using it wrong.
In your situation I would put an en suite as you have two other bedrooms for storage.

balalake · 22/10/2022 14:41

En suite for me.

There again, I don't have a very large collection of clothes, no need to dress formally except for weddings, for example. I can understand why for some people a walk in wardrobe would be attractive.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/10/2022 14:42

I hate en-suites so bad that the Master bedroom in my house with an en suite is our dressing room. All clothes, all drawers, dressing table, hundreds of pairs of shoes. Looks like a charity shop Grin

And the lovely but much smaller 2nd bedroom just has our superking bed in it and bedside tables - it's so peaceful without a load of shit in it

Pootles34 · 22/10/2022 14:42

I would put a run of wardrobes in a spare room and use that as a dressing room, then ensuite in your spare space. Downstairs loo becomes a loo-tility, unless you already have a utility of course!

RosesAndHellebores · 22/10/2022 14:50

If your house has one bathroom and adequate wardrobe space, I'd go for the ensure. If it has two bathrooms I'd go for the walk in wardrobe. In my opinion walk in wardrobes need doors otherwose

RosesAndHellebores · 22/10/2022 14:51

Otherwise clothes become dusty.

sst1234 · 22/10/2022 14:53

En-suite before a walk in wardrobe. Especially if you have kids. It’s more functional and will add value.

Fairyliz · 22/10/2022 14:54

When you have two teenage girls you will be thankful for an en-suite when they are spending a minimum of 30 minutes each in the bathroom and you are all trying to get out to work/school.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/10/2022 14:56

En suite every time.

AndTwoFilmsByFrancoisTruffaut · 22/10/2022 15:01

I have both and they are equally as useful. I absolutely love our en-suite. It’s my haven when we have guests staying, which we do regularly. I love rolling out of bed in the middle of the night for a wee. I never wake DH up, I flush in the morning. I’m quite fussy and hate using the same
bathroom as guests! It’s nice for them to be able to have the bathroom all to themselves, too.

Walk in wardrobe brilliant for obvious reasons although can get v messy! Just tidied mine up. I sometimes iron my work clothes in there and stream clothes so it’s a v useful space.

healthadvice123 · 22/10/2022 15:04

My mum had a downstairs shower room and upstairs bathroom better than an ensuite I think

TheTeddyBears · 22/10/2022 15:04

Mumsnet hates en-suites but I love mine. It's probably the most used bathroom in the house. We have adequate space too for wardrobe so it's good use of the space.

WeAreAllDead · 22/10/2022 15:06

I’d rather have a walk in wardrobe that has enough space for everyone’s clothes plus washer, dryer, laundry baskets. Saw it on an American property show years ago and think it’s genius.

I can’t stand en suites, they’re almost always shoe horned in at the expense of actual bedroom space, so you could end up with barely any floor space and only just enough space for a wardrobe and a bedside table.

I wouldn’t put a toilet in one, but an extra shower/sink would be nice right now as the teens battle it out every evening as to who’s going in first and fuck me they spend at least an hour in the bathroom (luckily we do have a downstairs toilet off the utility).

DramaAlpaca · 22/10/2022 15:08

I wouldn't want a bedroom without an en-suite.

I must admit though that I'm seriously considering annexing DS's room as a dressing room when he finally flies the nest.
