Hi all just wondering if I should take my son to urgent care with his finger? Definitely infected he is 3 so worried it could spread or turn sepsis! Thanks

Show it to a pharmacist, they will advise

ElzBevan · 22/10/2022 07:41

Call 111. They will advise.

Badgirlriri · 22/10/2022 07:41

No.

Onedayatatime22 · 22/10/2022 07:42

Go to a chemist.

Ichoochoochoosethis · 22/10/2022 07:43

When my DS had this he had to have the infection cut out in A&E, although it looked a little worse than this one. At best I assume he’ll need antibiotics so would call out of hours for a doctor to review it

Darbs76 · 22/10/2022 07:43

Agree with going to pharmacist who can physically see it. My friend had an issue with an infected lump on her foot. 111 said to put a wet flannel on it, I saw the photo and told her to go to A&E. She went to the pharmacist who told her to go straight to A&E where she stayed for 5 days having IV antibiotics. Some things need to be seen to know fully what’s wrong

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 22/10/2022 07:43

Soak it in diluted dettol

Libre2 · 22/10/2022 07:44

Pharmacist as other have advised and tcp. Or if you have it (unlikely I know but you might have a loony relative like we do)
colloidal silver - works miracles.

Obviously if DS starts showing signs of sepsis then take more urgent action but if it’s just the finger try not to worry too much.

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 22/10/2022 07:46

Do not take his to see a pharmacist. This is a paronychia and needs draining - it will take 2 mins . I would take him to minor injuries.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 22/10/2022 07:47

Draw a line around the bottom of the red bit now so you can tell if/how much it spreads.

Go to a pharmacy as soon as it's open - it's possible they might think some magnesium sulfate paste will "draw" it. Or they might suggest an out of hours appointment.

This used to happen to DSS and he usually needed antibiotics to shift it.

Anunusualfamily · 22/10/2022 07:50

Yeah it’s a paronychia needs to get the pus out. Go to minor injuries make sure he has some paracetamol or ibuprofen on board before you go

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 22/10/2022 07:51

I honestly think this needs antibiotics or drainage (not as dramatic as it sounds). I would take him to your local minor injuries or urgent care.

Flowersintheattic57 · 22/10/2022 08:03

Pop him in the bath to play for a while to soften the skin. Afterwards when he’s out and dry, gently press away from the nail and see if that releases the pus. I used to get these regularly when I was young. Otherwise, small injuries and dose him up before you go.

Fuckallthetories · 22/10/2022 08:03

Call 111 and see what they suggest

hwmumofthree · 22/10/2022 08:03

Iv tried to press on it and puss comes out but not from the blister just from the red area so I think it will need to be drained

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 22/10/2022 08:08

If you have a minor injury unit near you, I’d take him to be seen there - they may suggest oral antibiotics and see if they can drain it; or they may want him seen by the paediatric team for more robust treatment given his young age.

LiftyLift · 22/10/2022 08:11

My Dad had this recently, I don’t want to alarm you, but I do think you need to go to A&E. He has had numerous antibiotics and the infection has spread all the way down his finger. It might look minor but not worth the risk of it spreading. He’s still in a lot of pain weeks later and the whole finger is red and swollen.

hwmumofthree · 22/10/2022 08:12

@LovedFedAndNoonesDead everything is at our hospital so we have to go through a&e

I would take him to be seen then - Saturday mornings always used to be the ‘best’ - if there’s ever a good time to have to go - to be in paeds A&E (I was a paeds A&E nurse) seems daft running all over the place when he’s likely to end up there anyway!!

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 22/10/2022 08:58

And that would be an entirely appropriate A&E trip then.

MithrilCostsMore · 22/10/2022 09:00

Er no. Soak it in hot salty water every couple of hours. My daughter had five of these two weeks after being born as all her fingernails are ingrowing and as they hardened up, they cut the skin and they got infected. Warm salty water. I get them too and DD is 11 now and has them loads still.

NatM15588 · 22/10/2022 09:02

I had this on my thumb recently went to chemist but they said gp needed to see it. It was infected and needed antibiotics and magnesium sulphate paste to draw out the pus. I would take him to out of hours.

BattenburgDonkey · 22/10/2022 09:02

My son had this when he was 2, I took him to a pharmacist and they said it’s infected so straight to GP/minor injuries. It needed draining and anti biotics and a return visit, they were discussing IV antibiotics if it didn’t clear up. I’d skip the pharmacist if it looks infected and go straight to minor injuries. I wouldn’t be panicking about sepsis at the min but you can’t leave it untreated

Mabelface · 22/10/2022 09:13

Yes, take him. It needs draining.

DuneFan · 22/10/2022 09:18

Yes my ds had this. Pharmacist said to call 111 ASAP and 111 made us an urgent appointment at minor injuries. Needed antibiotics and an x Ray.

I'd waited a few days and soaked in tcp etc etc so we got a grilling about why we hadn't come in sooner.
