To buy a second pram for 10 week old baby

We bought a travel system for our newborn baby and love it for walks but we used it recently on public transport in London and it feels so bulky.

We would use public transport fairly regularly, about twice a week.

So AIBU to want a different pram specifically for public transport? And if so , could you recommend one for newborns and up that handles easily on trains, tubes and buses?

And also should I get a second-hand second pram?

I got a Maclaren lie-flat buggy and used it from birth cos I am in London. Shrug. So easy to fold & carry.

catsnore · 20/10/2022 20:59

Second hand pram - definitely. Your needs change as they grow and you don't want to be endlessly forking out for different pushchairs. There is so much decent second hand stuff available.

I always kind of regretted getting a trace system and wish I’d never bothered. Bet what you want it’s your money :) I certainly did

I only ever bought second hand prams and had some super bargains on Facebook marketplace and eBay. Give it a good clean if you're concerned, but I don't think a brand new pram is essential in the same way a car seat needs to be new.

Mamai90 · 20/10/2022 21:21

I hadn't a clue about prams when I had my daughter so I bought something I liked the look of. Paid £850 but in all honesty it was pretty shit.

When daughter was 9 months old I bought the icandy raspberry as it was on offer down to £250, reduced from £760. Omg, the difference! Its light, narrow and perfect for public transport (I use the bus on a daily basis), large hood that keeps sun out if babys eyes and decent sized basket. It's the best £250 I've spent. It's still on offer now.

Maybe an umbrella fold would suit you? We had a Quinny travel system when my DD was a baby but we ended up buying a cheap umbrella fold buggy from Argos as it was easier to manage and lift in and out of the boot of the car. We didn't have it from newborn but I'm sure it was from newborn and it definitely laid flat.

I have a baby jogger city tour 2 and I love it. I had a 2nd hand icandy peach with my daughter but found the same issue - so bulky and heavy. The city tour 2 folds up very small and can be used from birth as it lies flat. You can get a carry cot to go with but I didn’t bother. I got mine on Amazon

We have two prams. A ‘standard’ pram and a travel pram (Joolz Aer). Only regret is we didn’t get the travel pram sooner. I waited until we needed it for a holiday but it’s really handy at home too.

vegang · 20/10/2022 21:33

I find the baby jogger city tour 2 great for trains and buses

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 20/10/2022 21:33

My last dc may or may not have had 6 methods of transport....
😬

vegang · 20/10/2022 21:34

And no YANBU I have a travel system for every day and the stroller for travel

My youngest is 14 years old now, but way back when he was a baby, Bugaboo Bees were the pram for public transport.

LiftyLift · 20/10/2022 21:41

I always see Baby Zen yo-yos in London but we bought an Ergobaby Metro. It’s half the price and brilliant. Proper one hand fold and folds down really small.

NotJustAnybody · 20/10/2022 21:49

I had a McLaren, something like the XT, with multiple positions, so with the lowest the baby/toddler was practically lying down. It was mega easy to fold. It had pneumatic wheels at the back so mega easy to wheel over rough terrain. It had a UVA cover, head to toe, so was excellent taking abroad. I still have it in my loft 14 yrs later! My expensive fancy pram was ditched at 9mths in favour of the less pretty but oh so practical McLaren.

Joshanddonna · 20/10/2022 21:49

Yep. I think almost everyone ends up doing this.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/10/2022 21:50

The Armadillo City is perfect - lay flat, massive hood, one hand fold, little carry handle, folds so small, light as a feather. A second hand one is under fifty quid.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 20/10/2022 21:52

I would get a sling instead. Unless your local station doesn't have a lift so you're doing a lot of carrying the buggy up and down stairs.

Expectingfirstbaby · 20/10/2022 21:52

Thank you everyone for your input! I feel much better about getting a second pram 😁

I think I will scour the second hand market though as we've already spent so much on the travel system. But getting something smaller will help me feel more confident going out and about. I almost toppled my bulky travel system trying to reverse out of the train the other day (baby was in baby carrier so all good), but that gave me a bit of a scare.

I would wait until they are 6 months and get a durable mcClaren which will last through buggy years. When dc was tiny used a baby carrier on bus and tube much easier

Tomorrowisalatterday · 20/10/2022 22:01

I am not always sure that lighter is better - I have had our yo-yo topple over with toddler inside on the bus twice. Lighter is easier for stairs obvs

Novum · 20/10/2022 22:09

I second the umbrella-fold suggestion, it was what I always used when travelling on public transport. They don't topple over provided that you don't handgheavy bags on the handles or anything like that.

Mariposista · 20/10/2022 22:10

What about a sling? Takes up way less room.

Novum · 20/10/2022 22:10

Sorry, that should have been "don't hang heavy ..."

MumDadBingoBlueyy · 20/10/2022 22:12

Would a baby carrier be an option for you? That was always our go to on public transport
