To buy a second pram for 10 week old baby

We bought a travel system for our newborn baby and love it for walks but we used it recently on public transport in London and it feels so bulky.

We would use public transport fairly regularly, about twice a week.

So AIBU to want a different pram specifically for public transport? And if so , could you recommend one for newborns and up that handles easily on trains, tubes and buses?

And also should I get a second-hand second pram?

We have the Ergobaby Metro - it's a cheaper but just as good alternative to the Yo-yo (can also go in the overhead on a plane). The pram is lie flat but it also has a newborn attachment which I preferred to the Yo-yo because they don't have to be strapped in - it's like a little bassinet (but the buggy is still foldable with it on). We live in London and it's our only buggy - love it

I think you're the second person to say the ergobaby metro - interesting as I hadn't heard of it but the yoyo was on my list to look at. I really miss that we don't have those big mother care shops anymore where you can look at a bunch of baby things in one place, in the flesh. Sigh.

We recently got the ergobaby 360 carrier which is excellent, but so far I haven't gone out on public transport without the pram too - I keep thinking I may need to put baby down or use the basket. Although in the end the baby is in her carrier and I'm just pushing around the (redundant) bulky travel system. Gah!

I got a GB Qbit and it was absolutely brilliant. One hand compact fold made but also when fully set up it's really narrow so great for traveling around cities.

Downside is that it's forward facing only, unless you use it with a carrycot/car seat bought separately.

I'm actually about to sell it. It's in nice condition. If you like you could look it up and if you think it would suit your needs let me know by PM and if you're anywhere nearby we might be able to arrange something.

Expectingfirstbaby · 20/10/2022 22:19

I was thinking this too. Our baby is only 10 weeks and if I get another pushchair will I then need to get a third at the 6month+ mark because of changing needs. I think if I can score a second hand one quite cheaply now I'd just get it an see, but it is a worry.

I would definitely recommend one that folds down square like the Ergobaby or Yo-yo so you can take it easily on a plane - otherwise you'll be wanting a third buggy first time you fly with them!

badg3r · 20/10/2022 22:22

We had a maclaren techno I used to take on the tube a lot. Yo-yo is amazing. But you can't get a full food shop on it, which you can with the maclaren 😉

Expectingfirstbaby · 20/10/2022 22:26

Ouch! Having the yoyo topple on the bus must've been scary 😨

Ah yes, plane travel! I hadn't thought about that at all.... Thank you!

38 years ago we bought a beautiful Silver Cross Carrycot/pushchair/pram for our DD,but it was flipping useless on public transport so we also ended up getting a very basic buggy from Mothercare. In those days you had to fold the buggy before getting on the bus,and all the buggies would get piled one on top of another in the luggage rack so there was no point in spending money on anything too precious.

Fast forward to today, and we have our DGD(2) for two days a week. For me,her Quinny pushchair is a handful on the bus (and I'm not as nimble forty years on!)so we found a John Lewis Everyday Basics stroller on Facebook Marketplace. It's brilliant, and our DD borrows it too for holidays and car trips.

I have an Uppababy Vista in London and it is a bit of a beast on public transport so i appreciate why you would want to ditch the travel system. I've managed until 15months just using that and a carrier (ergobaby 360) but i know what you mean. As pp have said, if you can manage to 6months, then you'll have more choice with which ones to buy next as some are only suitable from 6months onwards.

If you live south of the river, there is a big mamas and papas at Purley Way in Croydon - you can see loads of buggies and the tram stops pretty much outside, so really easy to get there. I don't know north london but there's probably one there as well?

RedSoloCup · 20/10/2022 23:43

We were given a travel system which saved us a fortune esp as I realised it was too bulky and bought a lie flat stroller which was used more than anything else!!

Poppins2016 · 20/10/2022 23:44

You can try pushchairs in John Lewis or Mamas and Papas. We did that (plus Mothercare, when it was open) then sourced our travel system secondhand when we decided what we wanted.

I wished we had an additional pushchair with my first child and finally bit the bullet when I had my second baby (although, I wanted something for all terrain rather than your purposes) and regret not doing it sooner. It's definitely worth making your life easier if you can afford it.

Poppins2016 · 20/10/2022 23:46

Our additional pushchair is also secondhand, no regrets. FB marketplace and Gumtree are very useful!

Danikm151 · 20/10/2022 23:49

Silvercross reflex stroller is great. Umbrella fold but sturdy.
lies flat, newborn attachment (head part)
uv hood
durable wheels
adjustable handles
suitable from newborn up to 25kg(about 4 years)

achangeisafoot · 21/10/2022 06:00

Why not a sling?

Realityloom · 21/10/2022 06:03

Maclarens are fab well worth the money. Strong buggy but unless you find some type of insert they are not for 3 month old babies.

Orangedaisy · 21/10/2022 06:07

I used my maclaren style buggy with dd2 from 5 weeks. We had it from dd1 and needed to go on a plane and then London public transport. She looked tiny in it but was absolutely fine. But she was a neglected second born 🤣

SunlightThroughTrees · 21/10/2022 06:41

I did this and got a Babyzen Yoyo (which is still going strong after more than 4 years of daily use with 2 DC).

Expectingfirstbaby · 21/10/2022 08:57

Thanks for the heads up about the big Mamas and Papas in Croydon. I live in West London and our go-to has been the John Lewis in Westfield.

Although they don't have a babyzen yoyo to try out. I think we may go back there and try baby in a couple of different prams - once she's 6 months.

I do wish that the people working in the baby section of John Lewis knew a bit more about having babies. We're first time parents and didnt have a clue. We regretted the pram we bought from there and the first baby carrier (luckily they let us return the carrier for a different, much better one).

Does anyone know of any other big baby shops around west London?

OP posts:
Expectingfirstbaby · 21/10/2022 08:59

Ha! Some of these more nimble prams do say they're good from newborn, but they look a tiny bit exposed. I guess I'm comparing to the giant and very sturdy bassinet on my travel system 😁 I think my main takeaway from this chat is to wait 6 months and in the meantime use my baby carrier.

We have a Priam and a Yo-yo. Use the latter for travel and tube, and the former for more country walk, or we want the baby to sleep more comfortably.
