Olaplex making hair worse?

olapexidum · 19/10/2022 20:30

Anyone used Olaplex Bond maintenance shampoo and conditioner and found their hair feels worse off?

I've spent many years professionally highlighting my hair and I've always managed to keep it in good condition with regular cuts and conditioner.

My hairdresser started using Olaplex treatment during my 3 monthly appointments for the last year. There was some issue with hair being lightened too much but we've found a happy place with the use of different toners

Anyway, this last month I've been using the Olaplex shampoo and conditioner at home and my hair is like straw! It's breaking a lot and I have loads of split ends all of a sudden. I don't use heat ( once a week if that and only a hair dryer) nothing else has changed

But the more research I do the more I keep hearing about how amazing it is and not a single negative review which I find odd

Anyone else had sudden unexplained poor condition of their hair? Is it linked to the Olaplex?

Yes!!! I did not like this AT ALL!
Initially didn’t notice too much of a difference with in salon treatment, but then started using number 3 at home (once every couple of weeks)
and half way though bottle realised that lots of my hair was falling out. Have stopped using it now and hair is slowly recovering.

olapexidum · 19/10/2022 21:15

Thank you! I knew it couldn't just be me! It raves on so much about how brilliant it is but I'm not impressed.

Think I'll stop and see how much difference it makes

Any tips for helping with the breakage I've already got now?

Yes! Me too. Loads of hair loss and breakage whilst using it and now am left with dry frazzled hair. Wish I’d never started using it.
Cannot understand the love for it at all.

@tanqueray10 is that with the salon treatment or just their shampoo/conditioner that you used? Do you colour your hair?

I didn't get on with it at all!

makemeamum · 19/10/2022 21:21

Don't use it!

Moroccan oil is fantastic

Metabigot · 19/10/2022 21:22

Interested to hear this as I got some number 3 recently in the john lewis advent calendar.

olapexidum · 19/10/2022 21:23

I'm not sure if it's because I have highlighted hair and it's reacting with that or if it happens to uncoloured hair also but I've honestly never seen my hair break as far up as the top of ear in some patches( shoulder length hair)

Yes I didn’t like it at all. I was sure it made my hair worse but my hairdresser wouldn’t believe me and kept trying to sell me more products.
I started using Ouai and love it, it’s done wonders for my hair.

@makemeamum any particular brand? On its own or the shampoos you see with it in? I'm so desperate to get my healthy hair back!

I found the same - left my hair dry and dull and brittle.....only used it a few times then ditched it

1FootInTheRave · 19/10/2022 21:24

I didn't like olaplex at all.

Joico is superior imo. The luster lock was good when I had highlighted hair.

ElleEmDee · 19/10/2022 21:26

I loved it when I first started using it but then it started causing my hair to feel dry and hard to style. I paid a fortune for the shampoo and conditioner so still use it now and then but have reverted to my old brand mostly. The oil is good though- nice and light and a tiny bit goes a long way. I’ll buy that again but not the shampoo and conditioner.

SprinklesMcDoodles · 19/10/2022 21:28

I don’t think you are supposed to use it exclusively. I think it’s meant to be used as a restorative treatment.

olapexidum · 19/10/2022 21:29

It's so expensive! Regretting the money spent on it now, plus worried it's ruined a lot of years of maintenance which was pricey itself

@SprinklesMcDoodles

I have the salon leave in treatment done when I have my hair coloured but this is the shampoo and conditioner which apparently you're supposed to use daily as normal shampoo.

It’ll be the protein. Still use it but just once a month and use a hydrating hair mask when you use the shampoo and conditioner.

I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about the home use ones. Maybe if you stop using it and go to your hairdresser to see what they advise.

Londontown12 · 19/10/2022 21:44

There is hardly any protein in olaplex it fixes broken bonds inside hair ! I would advise a hair mask like blonde me by wella ! It could be something else your using with protein so u need more moisture x

@Hairobsessed123 thanks I have no idea about the protein side of it or what effects it has on hair but it definitely lacks moisture now

@olapexidum invest in a good moisture mask also osmo do a lush leave in moisture spray it’s in a teal coloured bottle u have to shake it makes hair lovely and silky ! Or invest in k18 4 min mask x

Olaplex isn’t a protein treatment - you’re not having protein issues.

Anything from Olaplex 4 onwards is highly diluted products aimed at the retail market and just mugging folk off.

olaplex 1 & 2 is where it’s at, 3 is further diluted to a fairer point and the rest is just junk to increase profits.

I’ve started using k18 this week with some good initial results but wary still. Im a Kerastase fan tbh.

Yeah I'm using 4 & 5 and the condition of my hair is awful since using it (unless there is a coincidental other reason for the sudden damage)

I'm so annoyed!

Yes! I had exactly this! After years of bleaching my hair was a bit dry. My hairdresser told me to use number 3 and I swear it made my hair worse. Loads of it snapped off and it was dry like straw and kept breaking shorter and shorter and on places like my crown, even though I stopped using heat and never tied it up.
I’d changed nothing else so put it down to the Olaplex. My hairdresser didn’t believe it could be that but I stopped using it and it slowly improved.

After much digging on the internet I did find some bad reviews and many people saying the same thing.

I found good improvement with Redken products, their extreme length shampoo/conditioner/treatments has done wonders for my hair. It took a while but it is healthy again now and it did help my hair grow a bit quicker. I also really like their anti-snap spray which you put on damp hair to stop breakage from brushing/styling.

Iwouldliketogovegan · 19/10/2022 22:06

My hairdresser told me to use no more than every 4 weeks as this was a risk so I use aveda in between
