To wonder how anyone gets a job in Tescos

Tootsey11 · 19/10/2022 14:27

Ds20 has been applying for jobs over the last few months and has applied twice to our local Tesco store, most recently for Xmas staff. For the second time he has been rejected, not even getting to interview stage. We cannot work out what he is doing wrong.

He has 5 Gcse's, 6 A levels, is willing and able to work, and can take a variety of shifts, so fully flexible.

Can anyone give me an idea of what he is doing wrong.

Its Tesco not Tescos

balalake · 19/10/2022 14:29

Do they prefer older people? What are the age ranges you see as a customer in the store?

Though it will never be acknowledged as such.

Its Tesco not Tescos

So so helpful (not)

Tootsey11 · 19/10/2022 14:30

Thanks for your very helpful comment, writing on a dodgy ipad where I cannot view what I am writing due to bloody ads.

Its Tesco not Tescos

Pathetic.

Badgirlriri · 19/10/2022 14:31

Probably just a question of numbers… too many applicants to even go through.

Wtafis · 19/10/2022 14:31

He may be being screened out by their values test if hes getting to that point

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 19/10/2022 14:31

What is his CV like? It’s tescos not a university so harping on about academic achievements won’t be relevant and may make him appear like he’s above it. What actual experience does he have?

Tipsyturvychocolatemonster · 19/10/2022 14:31

He has five GCSEs and 6 a levels? How does that work then?

5 GCSE’s is very low op, and 6 A levels sounds very high? Have you definitely got that right?

Stade197 · 19/10/2022 14:33

They might have other applicants that have previous experience working in shops

Maybe he could ask them for feedback on why he wasn't chosen?

x2boys · 19/10/2022 14:34

Can't speak for the actual store but my DH works for a subsidiary of Tesco ,in a warehouse, there are variety of ages from late teens etc .

loobylou10 · 19/10/2022 14:34

@myusernamewastakenbyme don't be a dick

LeafHunter · 19/10/2022 14:34

Is he getting rejected from other businesses at the same stage, or is he interviewing them but not getting the role?

Mumrey · 19/10/2022 14:34

Unfortunately it can be a situation where it’s not what you know but who you know, helps if you know someone working in that Tesco store.

ExtraOnions · 19/10/2022 14:34

My 16 year old (5 GCSEs) just got a seasonal job at Boots … they pay just under £10 an hour.. so if he’s not getting any joy at Tesco, try one of the other larger retailers, as everyone seems to be taking on at the moment.

When DD was applying, we found Tesco to have the worst application site.

Try going for seasonal, and if he’s good enough, they might keep him on.

Also this, I have 2 tesco express stores in my town and the staff are all on the older side

My son was rejected by Tesco the first Christmas he applied- although he was willing to do the weekend shifts that were being advertised. The next year he got in, having one big advantage - a friend who already worked there. There was a space on the form asking for name and staff number of anyone you know - that was only difference other than being 17 not 16. The friend was taken on at 16 - he had an aunt working there.
I sat with him both times and discussed the scenarios with him and I can’t see why he messed up the first time on those. The

One of DC friends got a job in local village Tesco express at 16 and when she went to uni they let her transfer to the uni town.
My DS got a job in the same small Tesco. He had just graduated from uni and moved back home while he looked for a grad scheme, he worked there for 6 months.
They are a good employer IMO. He had to be flexible but he was paid well and enjoyed it.
He did however apply for many, many jobs in retail and was rejected by Asda and M&S among others.

gamerchick · 19/10/2022 14:39

Is it not his age. Something to do with serving alcohol or something?

Aldi is taking on I think. As is b&m for Christmas. Good chance of being kept on.

karalimed · 19/10/2022 14:40

In my experience, you have to know someone that works there.

I've never had any trouble getting jobs anywhere except supermarkets. They have so many applicants it's either knowing someone or blind luck.

Try smaller shops, pubs etc. Most shops and cafes near me have signs in the windows advertising for staff.

MarmiteCoriander · 19/10/2022 14:42

Maybe they are wanting younger, and cheaper staff?

What experience does he have? At 20, I'd expect some experience- even from a weekend job at school or part-time if he was studying.

BertieQueen · 19/10/2022 14:43

Heard this many times about supermarket jobs.

what about trying the b & m/ poundstretcher/home bargains places if you have any near you?

dollybird · 19/10/2022 14:43

My DD got a job in the Tesco warehouse earlier this year fairly easily (bearing in mind she'd had lots of previous interviews without success as v shy/awkward). But she hated it, and lasted three weeks. Store is probably different. I worked in Tesco for my Saturday job at college, but that was a long time ago and things have changed a lot since then.
