To wonder how anyone gets a job in Tescos

Tootsey11 · 19/10/2022 14:27

Ds20 has been applying for jobs over the last few months and has applied twice to our local Tesco store, most recently for Xmas staff. For the second time he has been rejected, not even getting to interview stage. We cannot work out what he is doing wrong.

He has 5 Gcse's, 6 A levels, is willing and able to work, and can take a variety of shifts, so fully flexible.

Can anyone give me an idea of what he is doing wrong.

Is he answering the application quiz sensibly/correct?

Ted27 · 19/10/2022 14:47

my 18 year old just started at Tescos this week. He’d applied for about 20 supermarket and fast food jobs and this was his second interview.

He’s got quite a good CV for his age though - 2 years experience working in a grocery shop on Saturdays, Duke of Edinburgh, voluntary work in a shop, positions of responsibility at school and college.

Its impossible to say what your son is doing ‘wrong’ without seeing his CV but its likely that he isnt doing anything wrong - its a numbers game

Its Tesco not Tescos

It's "it's" and there should be a full stop.

badbaduncle · 19/10/2022 14:53

It'll be reliability - they'll think he'll leave soon.

How the hell did he end up with 5 GCSEs and 6 A Levels! What an odd set of qualifications!

Always one

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 19/10/2022 14:56

I’ve applied three times since 2013 and never got anywhere. I have good experience having worked at another major supermarket and I always pass those situation questions everywhere else I’ve applied. Fully flexible. I’m not applying again. Pointless. Whatever they want, I don’t have it.

balalake · 19/10/2022 14:29

Do they prefer older people? What are the age ranges you see as a customer in the store?

Though it will never be acknowledged as such.

Not if the fact that my husband is having the exact same experience at age 40 is anything to go by!

Don't know what the answer is OP but it's INFURIATING to know that there are shedloads of jobs going but no one seems to want to hire you/your son/my husband.

VoiceOfCommonSense · 19/10/2022 14:59

Every little helps..

I got a job in Tesco when i was much much younger. It was the worst 15 hours of my working life.

Also this, I have 2 tesco express stores in my town and the staff are all on the older side

Same in my local Tesco.

Mrssophie · 19/10/2022 15:11

Has she tried other supermarket too? I worked part-time at Sainsburys while studying 6 years back and they were a pretty good company to work for. They often took on younger staff, especially to cover weekends.

Maybe support her with the customer service quiz they make you do for part of the application because a lot rides on that.

Tinner01 · 19/10/2022 15:13

Agree, this sounds a bit weird OP!

Tinner01 · 19/10/2022 15:14

Sorry meant to reply to @Excited101 !!

Givenuptotally · 19/10/2022 15:18

What work experience does he have, exactly? It's quite late for a first job and probably rings alarm bells.

Whilst there is a lot of work out there at the moment, you can't assume your face will automatically fit. Try some other places.

Threadkillacilla · 19/10/2022 15:19

Is he getting to interview or stalling after the online quiz? He may be answering the online quiz too well. They like people to know when to involve a supervisor rather than show initiative according to my DC.

usbjsun · 19/10/2022 15:21

What is his previous work experience? I assume he has already had jobs considering he is 20. If this is his first job i would assume its because he has no work experience.

Lizzy7596 · 19/10/2022 15:22

They look at availability to work all hours.
Did your Son tick most boxes ?.

WhiteChocMocha · 19/10/2022 15:25

They get many applicants. A lot of the time it's a number's game - if they have 50 applicants and 2 positions, they'll interview first come first serve, and if early interviewees check out ok, they'll give them the job and reject the rest.

The job doesn't have many requirements so it's unlikely that they list them by best-to-worst, or having high qualifications like A-levels can be a disadvantage as they might assume they won't stick around. If someone has years of retail experience they'll more likely to be considered.

LazyJayne · 19/10/2022 15:26

Come on OP, you’ve got to tell us how he got 6 A levels after only getting 5 GCSEs.

bananapyjamas · 19/10/2022 15:26

It will be a combination of his experience, availability and the number of applications they have received.

smooththecat · 19/10/2022 15:31

Far more jobs and better pay (but harder work) in the warehouse if you are near one.

Confusion101 · 19/10/2022 15:31

myusernamewastakenbyme · 19/10/2022 14:28

Its Tesco not Tescos

To be fair if they were applying for a job and on the cover letter wrote "Tescos" instead of Tesco it would look very bad and might be a reason for not taking him on interview so this poster has a point!

Tootsey11 · 19/10/2022 15:33

OK, to answer a few questions.

5 Gcse's is correct. He didn't try at school, so got 5 including Maths and English.

He went to college, stayed there for 2 years, got ACC then with covid and recurrent lock downs decided to return and done another 3 and got triple A*. He has some work experience mainly operative working in production and joinery. He just wants to work and is feeling deflated. This is our local Tesco branch, we are in rural Northern Ireland. He does not know anyone who is already working there, application did ask that.
